I think this book would be especially good for any young person to read who is just starting out in his/her career. It's not just about politics and not even just about leadership, but really about how to function with others and succeed. After reading it and hearing about the way he turned NYC around, I think that had he been elected President, he could have really helped America get turned around. Certainly he would have done a much better job than Obamanation. Giuliani's biggest faults are his unbiblical--and un-Catholic--positions on abortion and homosexuality, but I like the way he thinks on most issues. A bonus in the book is the insights it gives into the 9/11 tragedy from the perspective of the Mayor of NYC. Very moving. Great read! Thanks, Ginger Thompson, for giving me the book!

Meh, couldn't finish. Giuliani is stuck up and self absorbed: he writes from the perspective of being the heroic saviour in all situations and made it seem like he single-handedly saved ny from the disasters of 9/11. It was like reading a self-congratulatory common app essay in response to the prompt "when have you demonstrated leadership"

Overall, this book provided some helpful tidbits for those looking to explore leadership and how to approach it. It is written by an often well respected leader who has been tested.

Personally, I disagreed with many parts of mr. Guilianni's style. Throughout the book, his arrogance is evident and strong. As an author, and someone who's leadership style the reader is studying, this detracted from the positive impact of the book.

There were still things that were helpful. It provided an opportunity for much critical thinking regarding a wide range of issues. The perspective that he shares of 9/11 is also unique and valuable for understanding this historic event.

While this book reads more like an autobiography, there are still many helping portions in it, if you are able to stick with it to the end. I am not sorry I read this book, but it is not one that I would highly recommend.

Asked for and received as a gift. I don't know. Going to HPB.

Found a video of his opening the 2001 Season of Saturday Night Live and his monologue really was great. Those were words we should have used. Paul Simon played "The Boxer;" and it will induce some tears. Anyway, there's no mystery why people wanted to hear more from him after all that tragedy and how New York deals.

July 2014.

Great book on leadership. Different area of work but very like many of Jack Welch book on his principals of leadership at GE. Makes me wonder why Rudy did not do well in Pres primary race. Also makes me wonder how NY could recently elect their new guy

I have heard some great things about Giuliani, but this book made me believe all that I have heard. Giuliani's style of leadership while mayor is a great example for all of us learning the basics. He has set his course and kept to it. He knows what works for him and gives us the breakdown. Not that his course will always fit our own style of leadership, but it provides some great points to remember. At times, I felt myself reading an election bid for President. If he did run I would seriously consider him since I now feel that I have a better understanding of how he would take charge.

Interesting read. Insightful book that helps to outline some of the author's philosophies concerning politics and leadership. Some remarkable things occurred in NYC during his term as mayor there. 911 and Guilliani's role in assisting the city through that crisis receive a lot of press, it was interesting to learn what else occurred in the city as a result of his leadership.

I liked this book fairly well, but it seemed a little disorganized in structure. Giuliani began by giving an overview of the events of 9-11 and went into more detail in two different places in the book. There were two things that I found fascinating about this memoir: the reason for his quick actions at the moment of the terrorist attacks and some aspects of his life as a lawyer.

Giuliani's life and experiences seemed to lead him to the place of knowing exactly what to do at the moment of our nation's worst crisis in history. His quick action saved New York City from complete paralysis and destruction and comforted a nation as well.

His experiences as a U.S. Attorney and prosecutor of some of the most notorious mob criminals was fascinating. In fact, I wished that he had spent more time on the subject and had gone into more detail. A memoir on his life as a prosecutor would definitely be put on my "to-read" shelf.

All in all it was an OK read and a good glimpse as to what good leadership entails.

I really need to read some critiqe of Rudy after reading this book. I'm sure someone has valid reasons he ought not be the next president. I saw an anti-Rudy article in The Rolling Stone but did't get a chance to read it, and I started to read one in Harper's today but did'nt want to pay 7 bucks to buy it and had to leave to go see a movie-- gotta prioritize right? Patriotic duty to be informed is highly overrated. Over all it was an informative and kinda entertaining book.

Update 20/1/24 - I read this book more than 10 years ago and I’ve learned a good deal about Giuliani since, none of it good. But I stand by what I wrote after I’d read it, back in the day (below)
———————————————————-

The first section of the book - the part that deals with 9/11 and it's aftermath - is compelling and inspiring. the sections that follow...well, less so. this book starts off with a fantastic story but then becomes a preening 'how good am I' list of activities you can pick up from just about any book on leadership. My advice: stop after the 9/11 section - but do read this.
