Great story of a tough leader in the midst of the catastrophe of NYC. Recommended to Indonesian who thirst a figure of strong, accountable leader. This true story should amaze us how this gentleman played his role in 8 years to reduce the criminal 67%. Salute to Rudi!

Guliani is a great storyteller, and it was interesting to read how he chose to do hard things that would force him to improve. For example, he went to work for a judge that would work him really hard but make him great. He also practiced and practiced his public speaking and debating ability. Good to see that someone can work hard on those things and gain ability there. He's also incredible with names, something I'm working on.
I don't plan to organize anything exactly as he did, but reading about how much planning and effort he put into running New York inspired me to try many different ideas about organizing things I'm responsible for, and motivating people, like my kids, and gave me hints as to tactics to accomplishing things in a way that they will be effective.
The stories he tells -- 9/11, Federal Prosecution of the Mob, 9/11, his lost and won elections, 9/11, beating up bullies as a kid, 9/11, throwing Arafat out of a UN Concert he wasn't invited to, and 9/11 -- make it interesting enough to get through some of the less exciting details of planning meetings. The 9/11 parts are very heroic and exciting to read and remember, several of the contemporary biographies I've recently read tell what they did that day, and its good to learn from their responses.
I highly recommend this to everyone who aspires to improve their leadership and management skills.

[audiobook review]
A somewhat misleading title since a majority of the book is about how Giuliani and his team handled the clean-up, budget balancing, and crime reduction of New York during his two terms, as well as their first-hand experience on and after 9/11/2001. If that event is still too fresh and close-to-home for you, postpone reading this book until you're ready to handle revisiting the details of that day. It spans at least 1/3 of the book. In terms of leadership, he presents some good nuggets and backs it up with his stories from his time as a US attorney and Mayor of New York City. I zoned out for some of his politics and policies that popped up here and there since not all of them align with my own.

If this book was only 60 pages long, it would be fantastic. The first 60 pages contain Rudulph Giuliani's personal first hand account of the events of 911, and his personal efforts trying to coordinate and oversee the initial response and rescue effort. This section of the book is very interesting, it provides a whole new level of understanding of what those who were at ground zero were experiencing. The rest of the book is Giuliani's personal philosphy on leadership, I thought it was somewhat boreing.

This book is incredible for anyone interested in management or leadership. Not only does Giuliani talk about 9/11 but he also has a strong belief on what it takes to be a leader and gives examples in his everyday life. I would recommend this book for anyone who manages a team/group OR for anyone who is interested in a good and quality read. Giuliani may not have gotten far in the election race of 2009 but after reading this book it is obvious that if he had been elected he would have ran the country very well.

Miesto administracijai teko reaguoti greitai. Greitai teko ir atkūrinėti miestą. Žodžiu, knyga gan nišine tema, bet nenuvylė.

Forget the present day political hyperbole and Former NYC Mayor Giuliani’s role in the current administration—this book is a must-read manual for all leaders who want to improve their organization. The book starts and ends with Mayor Giuliani’s account of 9/11 and the leadership demands of those first critical days, a crisis “America’s Mayor” has prepared for in one way or another throughout his entire life. While the 9/11 narrative is fascinating, the real meat of the book describes how Giuliani took a city on the brink of total failure and ridden with serious crime to a city where you can safely visit and walk the streets with small children in tow. The former mayor describes the “Broken Windows Theory” and how holding individuals accountable for petty crimes translates into decreases in serious crimes such as murder and rape. Through the use of a data system called Compstat, criminals and crimes were tracked, improving police methods and lowering overall crime throughout the five boroughs of the city. Giuliani’s approach to incremental improvements and diligent tracking of metrics can be useful for any leader looking to continually improve their organization.

This book works well in the workplace, for church or community leaders, for parents. It's a fascinating look at how Guilliani transformed NYC from frighteningly gritty to Disneyworld. He recounts his actions on the morning of Sept. 11, 2001 (fascinating as well), and as his musings on leadership as learned through hands-on experience.
