I read this, at the recommendation of a colleague, along with Grote's "Ultimate Guide to Performance Appraisal." This book was useful to my work as we thought about the particular management skills and time values we want to assess in different job functions. It's also pushing my thinking on what is possible to attain with a well developed internal pipeline. One minor limitation is that, while they give a bit of attention to nonprofit or small business settings, this book is more directed toward the corporate environment.

Great book! The essential idea of this book is phenomenal. Working out the particulars is difficult. It's not a great "read" per se. It's rather blah. But thinking about the concept is great. The last chapter was great because of the specific application to one company.

A great book for showing what a leader needs to focus on at different leadership levels.

Exceptional reading.

This book is technically about how to implement a leadership pipeline but can also be seen by those who are in the middle of one. It's possible to get a better understanding of where you currently are and what would be expected to get to next level.

I don't usually read books on management. If I do, I don't easily get swayed by them, and treat them with skepticism unless they make good horse sense. This one did. I first heard about it in a training course I was on, and then picked it up in audio book form.

The central thesis of this book is that there are a number of key role transitions managers must deal with over their career - from managing self to managing others, then to managing first line managers, to leading functions, groups, and eventually businesses. Organizations that recognize these transitions can put in place a "leadership pipeline"; this being a set of training courses, assignments, and preparatory tasks to equip their managers to handle these phase changes smoothly and learn to be leaders, not just managers.

While the book is written as advice for organizations, I obviously read it to learn what I could as an individual. The authors point out that at each stage a manager needs to learn/ unlearn specific skills of they are to thrive. Having made the first transition myself in my career this far, I can vouch that the challenges and the joys they tell the reader to expect from it are indeed real.

The book is structured like a text book; each early chapter is a lesson that describes a transition, the skills needed, potential pitfalls, some anecdotal stories, and an FAQ. Later chapters go into things like succession planning etc. There's some irritating jargon here and there, but the writing's mostly easily accessible if a bit dry.

I found the book dragged a bit in the second half, but did keep me interested enough to finish. I'd not class it as a must read, but to a thinking professional, someone who looks at work, play, and learning as being facets of the same personal journey (as I do) it certainly provides enough food for thought!

Great book providing foundation on thinking and theorizing leadership. However, I have missed more practical implementation tips which was bound to be missed due to scope of the book. Anyway, I believe that since the concept of customizing the model was emphasized, too much detail would have harmed the overall content. Also, I wished more development on functional management passage which I felt was skimmed through with less substance.

This book was referred to me by a couple of colleagues at work. The book offers an understanding of the structured progression of leaders, competencies needed at each level and a common language and approach for companies to pursue in building the leadership pipeline. It also offers a good definition of potential and the types of potential. A good guide for career development, coaching, mentoring, planning and creating repeatability around cultivating leaders.

- gerenciamento do tempo
- valores profissionais

Not the easiest book to read. But the content deserves 5 stars.

The very concept of a pipeline with different turns is a great analogy and a great way to understand the different passages in our careers. The book provides a template a deep insights into the Skills, Time Applications and Values necessary for each different turn in a Leader's career. The template itself is very rich and is explained through stories and ways people fail to meet their responsibilities.

The template is not meant to fit perfectly into all companies, but to serve as a guide which each leader can adapt to their context. Once you do, you can start using it to Debug your organization and find the main way your pipeline might be clogged. The authors show how to do that by doing performance management based on the pipeline and diagnosing issues in your pipeline.

Overall the content is gold. Wish it was a bit easier to read.
