World Tour

John Rain takes on a world tour of Japan, Paris, Barcelona and New York with non-stop action. An awesome list of "hardware" used by John and Dox is featured and we become enthralled in the love John has for two women and of his infant son.

While Spy mysteries are among my favorites, John Rain is just not one of my favorite characters. This one was better than the last in the series; but none the less isn't compelling me to listen to the whole series. I have one more downloaded to my iPod. Unless it really brings a little more to the story, it will be my last.

4.5 stars. This one was fantastic. Dox was once again brilliant. The relationship between Tatsu and Rain was so emotional. The action here was fun. I thought what Delilah did was sheisty, and she was pretty much an asshole. Midori was also quite the bitch and I'm not sad to see her go. On to the next.

I've placed myself on partial library restriction while I work through some of the books I have stacked at home. I've had this one sitting around for over a year. This was the only one that I hadn't yet read in the John Rain series.

I agree with others who have said the books in this series got progressively better. Eisler's honing his craft for sure. I read them all jumbled up out of order, which I don't recommend. This book in particular would have been hard to grasp without knowing all the characters and their shared histories.

I had forgotten how good Eisler is at writing dialogue. Very witty and on point. This was (bad pun ahead) a very well-executed (groan!) plot. By the time you get to the last 75 pages, you can't stop reading.

The only thing that bugs me is the way Delilah thinks John Rain is some great catch. He's certainly a guy you'd want on your side. When it comes to his relationships with women, however, he really puts the "ass" in assassin!

It was worth reading, although at times I was frustrated with the characters and thought if that direction kept up it would be a waste of time reading. The main character is just as good at what he does, but the author naturally incorporates the character aging, and how this makes him re-approach how he takes on his missions etc. I like the cast the author is collecting, although they have flaws that irk me at times (they seem a bit 2D at times). It wasn't the most satisfying in the series, but well written.

First class as always!

Extremis provides another worthy tale. As always, the descriptive self exploration of John Rain provides more than another story of a mission to rid the world of evil men for profit. Dox, Delilah, Midori and son, Tatsu, and Kanzeki are woven into the story to rid the world of some evil. Eisler tells a tale of Japanese life, warts and all.

Finished this yesterday, reading in long stretches so that I'd be done before the work week began so it wouldn't keep me up at night. And I really enjoyed it, but maybe not as much as I'd expected to. I think I've liked the character interaction and character growth and development, particularly in John, so much when perhaps the plot was actually Eisler's primary focus. In this one where character and relationships were the primary focus...I don't know... I think I wanted more, somehow, but I'm not sure what I wanted. I did like what I got.

I found myself thinking that it was interesting to read a one man-two women love triangle. So many that I've read have been the opposite. I couldn't decide whether I was more invested in the outcome of this one because of that role reversal, or if it was because I started this series with book 10 or 11 (and I think the numbering gets odd because multiple series begin to intertwine) and so have always been partial to the romantic partnership depicted therein.

One note on the John Rain-Tatsu relationship - this one is perhaps one of the best written of the book, and really the series. I knew from the later books I'd read that Tatsu is held up as a mentor, hero type for some of the characters, so it surprises me in the earlier books how often I find him utterly infuriating - as does John. And then can forgive him - as does John. It just feels very, very real.

Another can't put it down read

I thoroughly enjoy the author and the characters in this book. Rain, Delilah, and Dox make an interesting team with divergent personalities and an interesting partnership

Interesting story with ample action and suspense. One gratuitous sexual scene that seemed crass, demeaning of the strong female character and basically...unnecessary (bosomed woman has shirt off). Otherwise, it was one of the better international thrillers that I have read of late.

I found this book to be rather extreme for me. The story of a killer for hire and the love triangle that happened was not very believable. However, the story moved along well. I read the book in one day, so apparently the book was ok.
