I truly relished the fact that this book was composed through journal entries, vividly narrating the story of how St. Louis was founded.

The young girl at the center of the story was effortlessly relatable and utterly lovable. It was straightforward to envision her heartbreak and the arduous trials she endured while growing up without a mother.

I really took great pleasure in it. It presented a remarkable means of depicting a segment of American history within the confines of a short novel.

It allowed readers to immerse themselves in the past, experiencing the emotions and events that shaped the founding of St. Louis through the eyes of the young protagonist.

The use of journal entries added an element of authenticity and immediacy to the story, making it all the more engaging and captivating.

Overall, it was a thoroughly enjoyable and enlightening read that offered a unique perspective on American history.

I was truly torn between awarding this book 3 or 4 stars. Growing up in Minnesota and being a 6th grade Minnesota History teacher, my anticipation for reading this book was palpable.

There is so much potential in this book that I believe could have been explored further. The author has done a great job of introducing these important historical elements, but it feels like the story just scratched the surface. For example, the experiences of the different ethnic groups could have been delved into more deeply, showing their unique cultures and how they interacted with each other. Additionally, the details of the oxcart journeys could have been more vividly described, painting a more complete picture of what life was like for those travelers.

Overall, I still think this book is a valuable read for anyone interested in Minnesota history. It provides a good foundation and sparks curiosity about the past. But with a little more development, it could have been an even more outstanding and engaging work. I look forward to seeing if the author decides to expand on this story in the future.

In the 1850s, a historical fiction unfolds from the perspective of a Metis girl. The Metis, in this case, being of French Canadian-Anishanabe heritage, have a unique story to tell.

This fictional account offers a fascinating glimpse into the past, exploring the experiences, challenges, and triumphs of this particular community during that era.

If you're interested, you can find this captivating piece in the SCCS library. It was originally designed for the 5th grade social studies class, with the intention of providing students with an engaging and educational resource.

However, it's important to note that the reading level might be a bit too high for some. Nevertheless, for those who are up for the challenge, it promises to be a rewarding and enlightening read, transporting readers back in time and allowing them to walk in the shoes of this Metis girl.
