When she goes to school she tells her class she has a brother that is a monkey. She tells her friends that they have to give her things to see her brother first.

I was entering junior high school in the 90s when the Junie B. Jones series was new, so I was oblivious to them until now, when I am beginning to rotate some short chapter books into my almost 5-year-old's bedtime story routine. On the one hand, I share the other reviewers' concerns about the book's language. As an adult, I appreciate the comedy in Junie B.'s juvenile diction, but as a parent, I want to encourage my son to speak, well, better. On the other hand, I don't think the author of these books expects the kindergarten diva to be a model for readers so much as a point of conversation for kids, their parents, and their teachers. Do I want my son to call his friends stupid and guilt them into giving him their snack tickets and high tops? No, but I am glad these things come up in books so that I can talk with him about them before he faces them in real life. Anyway, whether I love the series or not is beside the point -- I already can tell I will be reading them all, probably multiple times.

The language is so cute! “And so this morning, my eyes felt very sagging. Only then I sniffed something that woke them right up. And it’s name was delicious waffles!” (20). There are also several examples of metaphors perfect for younger readers learning about figurative language. “She told me that my brother was a little monkey. Only she didn’t mean he was a real little monkey. She just meant he was cute” (62).

I LOVE the misunderstanding in this book. Maybe it’s because we’re getting ready for another baby around here, but I DEFINITELY choked up at the end! This was perfect to spark more conversation with my 6YO.

My childhood revisited!

Words can be hard- there are so many meanings! I love Junie B.'s enthusiasm through life and just how much she trusts and believes in what her grandma tells her about her new little monkey brother.

Personal Response:
This book is an excellent book. I like how all of the Junie B Jones books are very easy to read. I would rate this book a 3 out of five stars because I liked this book a lot. This is one of my favorite books out of the whole series because Junie is all excited about having her brother be a monkey.

Plot:
It all starts when Junie's parents have a baby boy. While Junie is with her grandma, her grandma says that her brother is "the cutest monkey ever." Junie gets excited because she believes what her grandma says is true, that her little brother is going to be a monkey. She tells everyone at school that her brother is a monkey. Everyone at school is jealous and asks Junie if they can see her brother before the other kids see him. Her friends ask if Junie can bring her brother in for pet day. Junie ends up having to go to the principal's office and her grandma has to clarify that her brother is not a real monkey.

Characterization:
Junie is a 5 year old girl who is in kindergarten. She really enjoys school because she can talk with all her friends. Junie is like any other 5 year old, she is very gullible. She is so excited that she has a baby brother. She likes how all her friends are jealous of her brother and likes all the gifts and bribes they are giving her to see her brother first.

Setting:
This book takes place in modern day in a small town. Most of the book it is at her school or her house. When she is with her grandma, she is at her house because that is where her grandma babysits her. During school they are either at the playground or the classroom.

Audience:
Anyone from grades 3-5 would enjoy this book. This is a very easy read, so anyone would be capable to read this. Mostly girls would like this because it centers on Junie, the girls would relate more to this book.
