This was truly something unexpected for me - or rather, it was highly unusual for me.

Here I was, delving into a series of essays penned by Ursula Le Guin. The tone within these essays seemed to dance around, leaping from being humorous to suddenly turning deadly serious. Some of them didn't quite make a whole lot of sense to my mind, yet others had an impact that felt like a direct strike straight to my heart.

Certainly, some of these essays should be regarded as required reading. In particular, there was one that harshly castigated the blurring of fact and fiction, especially in light of all those politicians who seem to fabricate things out of thin air. Additionally, there were another couple of essays that emphasized the importance of imagination and how literacy serves as the key to all aspects of modern life.

If you happen to have moments of free time, I would strongly recommend that everyone picks up this book and reads an essay in between other books. It's a far better option than blindly sitting in front of the TV and mindlessly consuming whatever is on the screen.

I absolutely adored this book! I had never delved into any novel penned by Ursula K. Le Guin before. However, after perusing this magnificent collection of essays by the author, I am truly anticipating reading her other works with great eagerness. She possesses a simple yet astonishing style that has the power to penetrate the very core of its readers' hearts. In the very first chapter, aptly titled "Introducing Myself," she is at the pinnacle of her form. With fierce wit, she takes on the prevalent patriarchy of the present era. She writes,

I am a man. Now you may think I've made some kind of silly mistake about gender, or maybe that I'm trying to fool you, because my first name ends in a, and I own three bras, and I've been pregnant five times, and other things like that that you might have noticed, little details.

Women are a very recent invention. I predate the invention of women by decades. Well, if you insist on pedantic accuracy, women have been invented several times in widely varying localities, but the inventors just didn't know how to sell the product. Their distribution techniques were rudimentary and their market research was nil, and so of course the concept just didn't get off the ground. Even with a genius behind it an invention has to find its market, and it seemed like for a long time the idea of women just didn't make it to the bottom line.

In a beautiful little essay titled "Being Taken For Granite," she showcases her brilliance in prose as she writes about her vulnerability.

Huge heavy things come and stand on granite and the granite just stays there and doesn't react and doesn't give way and doesn't adapt and doesn't oblige and when the huge heavy things walk away the granite is there just the same as it was before, just exactly the same, admirably. To change granite you have to blow it up.

But when people walk on me you can see exactly where they put their feet, and when huge heavy things come and stand on me I yield and react and respond and give way and adapt and accept. No explosives are called for. No admiration is called for. I have my own nature and am true to it just as much as granite or even diamond is, but it is not a hard nature, or upstanding, or gemlike. You can't chip it. It's deeply impressionable. It's squashy.

This book is replete with such gems. I wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone who has a soft spot for literature.

Ursula K. Le Guin was a wise woman capable of creating true art.

In the essays like those collected in this book, we readers approach, small and admiring, her awake way of seeing the world, incredibly intelligently mixed with her rich imagination and inner life.

Thanks to the management of her gifts and her serious work as a writer, committed, real, not pursuing the game of commercial success and reward, she created unrivaled fantasy and science fiction stories.

She wrote because she couldn't not do it; it was what she was.

Without a doubt and without hesitation, I defend that she was key to art, literature, and thought.

She left us her worlds to understand, inhabit, and carry the weight of our own; and these essays are a face-to-face encounter with her personal reality, with her inner self and her reflections.

After reading them, I find myself unable to decide where I would like to stay and live, whether in her essays or in her novels.

But we can take comfort in one fact, and that is that truly everything is Ursula K. Le Guin.

I have loved Ursula Le Guin ever since I read "The Left Hand of Darkness" decades ago. It was truly a watershed moment in my reading life.

Over the many years that followed, my love for her deepened with each of her books, speeches, and essays. I never thought it possible to love her more, but this book has once again proven that the heart can hold more than one supposes.

This collection of essays is incredibly broad, covering a wide range of topics. It includes musings on reading and writing, anthropology and psychology, feminism, poignant remembrances of her past such as the standout "Indian Uncles," and even aging and beauty.

Threading through all of these diverse topics is her immense intelligence, empathy, creativity, humor, curiosity, and most importantly, her life as a reader. Even in essays that are not directly about reading or writing, her passion for books and reading, which she playfully calls her compulsive reading disorder, is clearly and brilliantly articulated.

Authors like Twain, Austen, Hemingway, Freud, Dickens, Morrison, Tolkien, Brooks, Shelley, Darwin, Eliot, Ginsburg, Tolstoy, the Bronte sisters, Woolf, and many more make multiple appearances throughout this book. Some are quoted, some are used as asides, and some are the subject of critical analysis, all of which are utterly fascinating.

I had no idea that Le Guin considers Woolf the greatest writer of the 20th century until I read this book. This revelation made my heart stop. One beloved writer saying this about my most beloved writer? It was pure joy! And her reminiscing about reading "The Lord of the Rings" to each of her sons at different times, and the delight each reading brought her, was, I don't know, some form of heaven for me. Truly... heaven.

In one of her essays, she writes, "I do think novels are beautiful. To me a novel can be as beautiful as any symphony, as beautiful as the sea. As complete, true, real, large, complicated, confusing, deep, troubling, soul enlarging as the sea with its waves that break and tumble, its tides that rise and ebb." Oh, Ursula. Yes.

This little gem wandered over to me thanks to Brain Pickings. And boy, am I ever glad it did! What a treasure it is!

Le Guin is an absolutely fabulous writer, and she has some gorgeous essays here. She is a study in eloquence and brevity. Her treatises on writing and reading should be required for any aspiring authors.

However, my favorite parts were the biographical essays and her thoughts on political issues. She touches on gender in just about everything, the problem of representation in art (there's not nearly enough diversity of all stripes), current politics, and why women wear such ridiculous shoes.

This was a thoroughly charming book to spend a fall day with. I loved being surprised by its richness and beauty. I highly, highly recommend it for Le Guin fans, essay fans, feminist readers, and aspiring authors and auteurs. What a great book indeed!

Wonderful, wonderful.

Le Guin's genius has truly scared me for decades. The reason is simple: we fear what we don't understand.

After reading this book, I feel like a changed person. I made an effort to savor every single bit of it, but alas, I'm getting on in years and can't remember all the delicious details. That's why I'm so grateful that I bought this book.

Today, it suddenly dawned on me that I had this precious book, and that means I'm free to read it again and again. I can highlight those passages that seem to sing directly to my soul, even if it turns out to be most of the book.

Reading this book at this particular time in my life feels almost serendipitous. And to top it off, today I learned with excitement that a movie about Vita and Virginia will be made.

Virginia Wolfe was the inspiration behind the title of The Wave in the Mind. And today, I truly understand the importance not just of a word, but of the right word.

Also, I now realize that writer's block is not a hindrance at all. In fact, it's necessary. It's that pause during which those right words, and the character whose story must be told, will eventually show up.

While I have noted interesting quotes throughout the book, I have had to make an effort to continue reading. The author's message about rhythm in writing is interesting.

For my taste, the tone is a bit questionable, quite critical and overly focused on gender issues. The reader has to be quite interested in the latter in order to enjoy the book.

Perhaps if the author had balanced the tone and explored other aspects in more depth, the book would have been more engaging. However, it still has some valuable insights that could be useful for those interested in writing or gender studies.

Overall, it was an okay read, but not one that I would highly recommend.

I had read a couple of -brilliant- short stories by Ursula K. Le Guin, but I had never read one of her novels as I don't usually read Science Fiction.

This collection of short essays has made me deeply admire this extremely intelligent, committed and challenging writer.

Le Guin's works are known for their thought-provoking themes and unique perspectives. Her stories often explore complex ideas such as gender, power, and society.

After reading these essays, I realize that I have been missing out on a great writer. I am now determined to explore some of her fictional works.

I believe that her novels will offer me a deeper understanding of her ideas and a more immersive reading experience.

I look forward to delving into the world of Ursula K. Le Guin's fiction and discovering the wonders that await me.

I truly had a wonderful listening experience with this collection of essays by Miss Le Guin <33.

Her words are like a gentle breeze that caresses the soul.

Here is a particularly beautiful passage she wrote about fiction.

She said, "I want to recognize something I never saw before. I want the vision to leap out at me, terrible and blazing, the fire of the transfiguring imagination. I want the true dragons."

This passage makes me realize that fiction has the power to open our eyes to new and wonderful things.

It can transport us to different worlds and let us experience emotions we never thought possible.

Miss Le Guin's writing is a testament to the beauty and power of the written word.

I can't wait to explore more of her works and be inspired by her creativity.

Overall, this listening experience has been a truly enriching one, and I will cherish it for a long time to come.

It has been my book of 2024. It has been by my side for several months, and I have thought and will think a lot about it. It is inevitable to realize through these texts that Ursula is a fantastic person (in all its meanings, I think it is precisely an adjective that she would love). She is super inspiring, lucid, and funny. At least for me, it has made me want to read more, write more, be more conscious of words and communication, of the sense of community through language... and of course, to continue reading the wonderful Ursula, who I really like <3.

Every time I pick up this book, it's like embarking on a new adventure. The words seem to dance on the page, captivating my attention and pulling me into Ursula's world. Her insights are profound, yet presented in a way that is easy to understand and relate to. It's as if she is sitting right beside me, sharing her thoughts and experiences.

I can't wait to see what else this book has in store for me, and I'm sure that it will continue to have a significant impact on my life. It's not just a book; it's a companion, a source of inspiration, and a reminder of the power of words. I'm truly grateful to have discovered it and to have had the opportunity to get to know Ursula through her writing.
