I had high expectations for this manga.

At first, I thought it was going to be an amazing read. The beginning was actually quite promising, with an interesting setup and some creepy elements.

However, as I continued reading, I found that the other parts became rather repetitive. It seemed like all the female character did was hunt men or seek revenge.

This got a bit tiresome after a while and took away from the overall enjoyment of the story.

Another aspect that disappointed me was that I didn't find it as scary as I had hoped. I was looking for a real spine-chiller, but this manga just didn't quite deliver in that department.

As a result, I think I might give another Junji Ito manga a try. Maybe there's one out there that will better meet my expectations and provide the kind of horror and excitement that I'm looking for.

I am a huge fan of Junji Ito's work. His drawing style really attracts me a lot and his creativity is extremely charming.

⚠️ Possible spoiler below ⚠️

I love that details about what Tomie is and why men end up wanting to dismember her or do that are still not revealed. Not understanding what is happening, from my perspective, is the most captivating thing about Junji Ito.

Junji Ito's works are full of mystery and horror. The way he portrays characters and scenes is so vivid that it makes the readers feel as if they are in the story. His unique style and imagination have made him one of the most popular horror manga artists in the world.

In his stories, there are often some strange and terrifying creatures or phenomena, which make people's hair stand on end. But at the same time, there are also some deep themes and emotions hidden behind these horror elements, which make people think and feel.

Overall, I really enjoy reading Junji Ito's works and look forward to seeing more of his excellent creations in the future.

I truly admire Junji Ito's works.

His creations have always had this unique ability to be both extremely scary and deeply disturbing. It's a strange feeling because on one hand, I hate how much I like them.

The scares are so intense that they can send shivers down your spine, yet there's something about them that keeps pulling you back.

However, when it comes to "Tomie 1", it wasn't quite as scary as some of his other works.

But that doesn't mean it wasn't great. The artworks, as always, were truly remarkable.

Junji Ito's attention to detail and his ability to bring his terrifying visions to life through his illustrations are simply outstanding.

Even in "Tomie 1", where the scare factor might have been a bit lower, the art still managed to captivate and leave a lasting impression.

It's a testament to his talent as a mangaka that his works can have such a profound impact on readers, regardless of the level of scariness.

I can't wait to see what other terrifying and amazing works he has in store for us in the future.

Tomie was a strikingly beautiful schoolgirl in those days before her body parts were shockingly discovered scattered throughout a Japanese plateau.

But this tragic event did not put an end to her allure. With her death, other Tomies emerged, identical in every aspect to the (presumed) original. These Tomies spread across Japan, captivating both men and boys. Merely looking at her cast a spell, compelling the unfortunate individuals to follow her commands, often leading to their own deaths.

It is never clearly established whether the first girl's horrible death in Tomie 1: The Junji Ito Horror Comic Collection was the initial incident that set off the series of events within the story. During a class field trip, Tomie's passionate nature raised the ire of her betrothed and her high school teacher, directly resulting in her subsequent death and dismemberment. However, as each subsequent story progresses, it becomes evident that the (seemingly) resurrected Tomie has learned only one thing from her experience - how to better manipulate others through her words.

The man presumed to be Tomie's aged father remarks, "Boys don't understand. They get really into her but... for some reason, they try to cut her body into pieces. What is it about her that so attracts these boys?" As the story unfolds, it becomes increasingly unclear whether these are the words of a concerned father or of Tomie's strange insecurities manifested in the form of an older gentleman.

What starts as a truly fantastical horror story gradually becomes more and more plausible (within the context of horror story logic) by the end of the first volume. Perhaps the maladjusted girl from the first section of the book was merely an extension of an earlier incarnation. Or maybe she was truly Victim Zero, as it initially appears. But as the stories become more independent and the characters less interrelated, it becomes obvious that there are numerous Tomies wandering the hills and valleys of Japan, haunting the springs and snow-capped mountains, driving hordes of men and boys willingly to their deaths.

Her motives remain elusive. While the reader can sense that Tomie is more than human from the first few pages, her base humanity cannot be ignored. Is she seeking the perfect love, which becomes so consuming that no mortal mind can hold onto life? Or does she deliberately set out to destroy others using her stunning beauty as a deadly lure? Or, yet another possibility, is Tomie some sort of demon that reproduces through its own dismemberment and must callously entice the unsuspecting into carrying out this task?

Very few answers are provided in Tomie 1, but a captivating series of questions are presented. Sadly, with the 2005 demise of publisher ComicsOne, it may become increasingly difficult to obtain subsequent volumes of Tomie that might offer some answers.

(*Tomie contains perhaps the single most horrifying image I've ever witnessed in manga - that of a multi-faced worm-beast crawling along the floorboards of an old mansion in an attempt to help the protagonist escape from Tomie. Indeed, the hideous creation is actually the distorted body of a formerly beautiful young girl who underwent such a transformation at Tomie's behest. The disturbing image of all these twisted faces topped with the partially-formed giant head of Tomie and trailed by the segmented body of an earthworm is truly nightmarish, yet oddly fascinating at the same time.)

This is not my favorite work of Junji Ito, in terms of the story (I suppose because the protagonists keep changing and it's a bit difficult to fully empathize with them), but it still maintains its essence of being crazy.

The first story, I think, was the one that left me the most

This is the first manga I've read by Junji Ito, and I know it's not by any means one of the scariest. It is terrifying, no doubt, but the horror atmosphere still remains somewhat restrained.

I particularly liked it, but I think the reader is terribly thrown into the events and we don't really know what's going on. It would have been great to add value to the horror atmosphere if the manga hadn't had a succession of randomly organized chapters. The chronological order bothered me quite a bit.

The art is beautiful and I immensely admire the creativity of the mangaka. I can simply feel the atmosphere of the manga just by looking at one of the drawings. I liked it, but it could have been better.

Overall, despite its flaws, this manga still has its own charm. The unique art style and the disturbing story managed to keep me engaged throughout. However, the lack of a clear chronological order did make it a bit difficult to fully understand and immerse myself in the story at times. I hope that in future works, Junji Ito will pay more attention to the organization and flow of the story to create an even more terrifying and engaging reading experience.

Tomie is a fascinating and somewhat terrifying character that appears in a series of connecting stories.

Some of these stories can be read independently, but they all share a common thread in the form of Tomie.

I have a deep love for all the Japanese elements that are present in these tales.

The atmosphere they create is creepy, spooky, and haunting, which really adds to their allure.

In fact, some of the stories even remind me of the ones my mom used to tell me when I was a child.

There is something about Tomie that is both captivating and disturbing.

Her presence seems to bring out the worst in people, and the stories explore themes of jealousy, obsession, and violence.

Despite the horror and gore that is often present, there is also a certain beauty and elegance to these tales.

The way the stories are written and the characters are developed make them truly engaging and unforgettable.

I highly recommend this series to anyone who enjoys Japanese horror and is looking for something unique and thrilling to read.

Ya Allah! That was truly terrifying! It was just what I had wanted. The experience was so intense that it left me on the edge of my seat. I am now eagerly anticipating reading the next part. I hope to gain a deeper understanding of where Tomie came from and precisely how she came into existence.

Her story is like a mystery that keeps pulling me in. I wonder what secrets lie behind her origin. Maybe there are hidden details that will shed light on her true nature.

As I wait for the next installment, my mind is filled with questions and speculations. I can't help but imagine all the possible scenarios and backstories. It's this anticipation that makes the whole experience even more exciting.

This year, I decided to start reading manga again. Maybe not as frequently as before, but at least one or two per month. Naturally, this was inspired by all the hype surrounding Junji Ito. However, contrary to what I thought, it was quite difficult for me to find some of his works that I really liked.

Fortunately, I came across Tomie, the first of his manga that completely obsessed me, both because of its drawings and the plot. In this volume, I feel that I really discovered the potential of the mangaka. Although he created a complete volume based on a main conflict, it doesn't become repetitive at all, and each of the scenes that make it up feel truly necessary to understand what is happening.

As a character, Tomie is one of the most interesting ones I have found in Junji Ito's works. And although I still have several doubts about her, many of her interests and motivations are more than clear to the reader.

Regarding the art of this volume, it is undeniable that each page is extremely beautiful but also twisted to the level that the mangaka has accustomed us to. I don't think I'm the right person to analyze it, but the only thing I will say is that some things impressed me so much that I ended up dreaming about them.

Overall, I'm really glad I discovered Tomie and I'm looking forward to reading more of Junji Ito's works.

TOMIE: ARRIBA

by Junji Ito

This is the first volume of the work that brought Junji Ito to fame as a horror manga artist. Tomie is a beautiful girl, but her beauty drives men to homicidal madness, compelling them to kill and dismember her. However, Tomie always returns. She returns because from each torn-off part, a new Tomie regenerates, spreading the infection that is herself, further and further. Faithful to his own style from the beginning, Ito's drawings are extremely disturbing and his stories are of a nightmarish absurdity that causes chills.

It is truly worth it.
