Hikaru no Go truly gets better with each passing book.

I'm eagerly looking forward to the later volumes where perhaps one or two Go games will be spread out over the entire book. For the present, Hotta shows great skill in balancing character development and plot progression.

One of the most remarkable achievements so far is the transformation of Hikaru from a rather mischievous brat to someone I've come to care about deeply and hope will succeed.

His rivalry with Akira Toya makes for extremely engaging reading as both of them are sympathetic and fascinating individuals, especially Akira.

However, I do feel a sense of regret that Sai's character seems to have receded into the background. I earnestly hope that they will delve deeper into his background and the era in which he lived. Additionally, his relationship with Hikaru could also be further developed to add more depth and complexity to the story.

This would not only enhance the overall narrative but also give readers a more comprehensive understanding of the characters and their motivations.

Three of the chapters in this volume are dedicated to covering a single go game. At first glance, this might seem dull, but in reality, it's far from it. One of the aspects I truly appreciate about Hikaru no Go is that you don't need to be a go expert, as I surely am not, to understand the dialog regarding go moves.

Obviously, having some knowledge of basic moves is beneficial so that you have an idea of what you're observing. However, the characters describe everything in terms such as "strong" and "weak" moves, invading, a dominating presence, a risky strategy, and so on. Even if you're a complete novice in go, you can still follow along.

In volume 6, Hikaru Shindo takes the test to become an Insei. Despite being relatively weaker compared to other candidates, he manages to pass because the sensei is impressed by how rapidly he has improved with so little formal instruction. (Of course, they're unaware of the thousand-year-old ghost who has been tutoring him.) Hikaru enters his first day of lessons at the Insei school and boasts that Akira Toya is his arch-rival. Since child prodigy Akira has just become a professional, everyone assumes that Hikaru must also be an incredibly talented child prodigy. But when Hikaru gets soundly defeated in almost every game, he receives a much-needed dose of humility.

Meanwhile, Akira remains obsessed with Hikaru, even though he is convinced (rightly so) that the other child is nowhere near his level. This leads to his first game against another professional as a pro himself. He gets to play against the reigning Oza, or top title-holder. The Oza is a patronizing old curmudgeon who decides to crush Akira when he believes the boy lacks humility. Instead, Akira plays an all-out game, hoping that Hikaru is watching. This actually makes for three rather dramatic chapters, as the story focuses on the psychology of the players rather than the game itself.

I like how the series shows that there is truly no limit to go ability. No matter how good you are in the circles you play in, you'll always encounter a bigger pond where even mediocre players can defeat you. And when you become the best in that pond, there are always larger ponds waiting. Hikaru started off barely able to defeat his classmates in a middle school go club. Now he's playing against Inseis, who could likely walk into most go clubs in Japan or anywhere else in the world and easily defeat everyone in the club. But against professional go players, they might as well be beginners. And Akira Toya, who is now a professional and someone who terrifies Inseis, is realizing that there are entire ponds within ponds that he has yet to conquer.

The bonus chapter at the end was a charming addition: the cast of Hikaru no Go putting on a play, "Assassination at Honnoji Temple," about the death of medieval warlord Oda Nobunaga, which, interestingly, had a game of go in it.

Another excellent volume.

Hotta provides us with a fascinating peek into the world of Akira. Through this, we gain a deeper understanding of just how much Hikaru has truly infiltrated his thoughts.

Hikaru reaches a significant and difficult decision point as he becomes serious about Go and sets his sights on chasing Akira. He is on the verge of taking the Insei exam, fully aware that if he passes, he will no longer be eligible to participate in the Go club and its tournaments. This decision weighs heavily on him, as it marks a major turning point in his Go journey.

Simultaneously, we also witness Akira in his very first match as a professional Go player, facing off against a titled Go champion. The pressure is palpable, and we see Akira's determination and skill on full display as he battles it out on the Go board.

This volume is filled with intense moments, complex characters, and a captivating storyline that keeps readers on the edge of their seats.

**"The Beauty of Stars"**

Stars have always held a special allure for humanity. Since ancient times, people have looked up at the night sky and been amazed by the countless twinkling points of light.

These celestial bodies are not only beautiful to behold but also have a profound significance in various cultures and mythologies.

Each star is a massive ball of hot plasma, burning with intense energy. They come in different sizes, colors, and luminosities.

Some stars are so bright that they can be seen even from a great distance, while others are much fainter and require a telescope to be observed.

The study of stars, known as astronomy, has fascinated scientists and enthusiasts alike for centuries. Through advanced telescopes and other instruments, we have been able to learn more about the nature and properties of these distant objects.

Stars play a crucial role in the universe, as they are the building blocks of galaxies and the source of much of the light and heat that we receive.

They also have a significant impact on the evolution of life on Earth, as the elements that are formed within stars are essential for the formation of planets and the development of living organisms.

In conclusion, stars are truly one of the most remarkable and awe-inspiring phenomena in the universe. Their beauty and mystery continue to captivate our imaginations and inspire us to explore the unknown.

Whether we are looking up at the night sky with the naked eye or using sophisticated telescopes to study them in detail, stars will always hold a special place in our hearts and minds.

The story seems to have reached a bit of a standstill here. It's centered around Akira engaging in a match with an old professional, and he's really giving that opponent a tough time. However, I truly wish Akira could understand that it's not Hikaru he's facing. But then again, there are still 17 books left in the series. I hold onto the hope that one day, Akira and Sai will finally meet. This anticipation adds an element of excitement and mystery to the unfolding narrative. Maybe their encounter will bring about a significant shift in the story, revealing new aspects of their characters and the complex world of Go that they inhabit. Until then, we can only wait and see how the author will continue to develop this engaging tale.

Picking this series up again!

I still know nothing about Go, but I'm having a blast regardless.

It's truly amazing how something can be so enjoyable even without a deep understanding. The lack of knowledge about Go doesn't seem to dampen my enthusiasm at all.

I really enjoyed the bonus chapter about Nobunaga! It was a fascinating addition to the series. Learning about Nobunaga's story and his significance in history was both educational and entertaining. The way the chapter was written made it come alive, and I found myself completely engaged from start to finish. It added a new dimension to the overall experience of reading this series, and I'm looking forward to seeing what else lies ahead.

Hikaru takes the insei exam, which is for more advanced go players, and manages to pass.

He then meets new people and makes new friends. He tells them that when Akria Toya played in the go school tournament, he begged the professor to let him play in the 3rd position just so he could play against Hikaru and win. (The 3rd position is considered the weakest spot.)

Hikaru has a spirit that sometimes helps him in go games. Everyone is shocked because Hikaru is the weakest player there. He goes to the go "place" to play games with the other players. He has 10 losses in the first 10 games. Then he starts to win some games. They discuss what one could have done to win, as it's a place where one learns. Now he is in the 18th place.

When Hikaru goes back to the go club, he plays a game with them, but Yuki doesn't want to see him there and might never come back to the go club again. Hikaru lies that he needs to get his science book, but actually, he is going to the go club.

Hikaru is now in a new situation where he is surrounded by a new crew.

However, his old crew is still there, albeit taking a backseat.

This represents a volume of growth for Hikaru, which is the overarching theme for the entire series.

The pages of the story seem to fly by as the Go games presented are extremely interesting.

Just observing the interactions between the new and old members really adds depth and compliments each other beautifully.

Yumi Hotta, who is responsible for the story, and Takeshi Obata, the artist, continue to work their magic and make this series super engaging.

Readers are constantly drawn into the world of Go and the lives of the characters, eagerly anticipating what will happen next.

Their combined efforts result in a captivating and enjoyable reading experience that keeps fans coming back for more.
