Among them, my absolute favourite is "The Tourist City in the South". Written in the 1920's, this story still holds great relevance today.

Hermann Hesse is my favourite writer. However, this particular work just disappoints me.

I have a deep love for Demian and Steppenwolf. The reason lies in the fascinating intertwining of fantasy and reality within them. Somehow, it implicitly showcases the genuine emotions in the characters. The somewhat obsolete writing style enables the readers to interpret them differently and also on a personal level. Since some intimate emotions seem easier to attach to it, it creates a unique reading experience.

But Pictor’s Metamorphosis, in my opinion, is nothing special. It is just a collection of short stories with rather predictable plots. There are indeed one or two pretty good stories within it, but overall, this book doesn't really leave me with a great impression. I guess only those more famous books are his true masterpieces, while others are just too ordinary.

I still have a great respect for Hermann Hesse as a writer, but this work fails to meet my expectations.
