I read "D-Day: Spearhead of Invasion" by Reginald William Thompson. This remarkable book delves into the details of D-Day,描绘了美国如何占领海滩并开始向内陆推进以阻止德国人。

这就是我对《D-Day: Spearhead of Invasion》这本书的看法。

Another charming little book in the Ballantine's Illustrated History of WWII is this one.

It manages to tell as much of the D-day story as possible within a 160-page format. In other words, it serves as a very good "amuse bouche" on the topic, a small taste that should whet one's appetite for more detailed tellings of the tale. RW Thompson, a real correspondent during the Second World War, tells the story with a hint of that urgency, even 30 years later.

Thompson focuses on the day itself, not delving too deeply into the massive planning or logistical buildup, nor the later implications of the assault. The action shifts from east to west and back several times, a logical approach to viewing such an immense battlefield. Everywhere, facts, pictures, and maps/diagrams are used to tell the reader the epic story, with the written part more in a supporting role than the mainstay.

This form of storytelling makes it an ideal book for the junior reader, as was originally intended when this series began in the sixties. The military enthusiast, gamer, or modeler will appreciate the pictures and maps but will long for deeper content with more anecdotes to enhance scenarios or dioramas.

Overall, it's a valuable addition to the collection of anyone interested in the history of D-day.

I recently read the book, "D-Day: Spearhead of Invasion" by R.W. Thompson.

I firmly believe that the author's intention in penning this book was to vividly convey the details of D-Day to the readers. It aimed to showcase how this significant event had a profound impact on our country during World War 2.

D-Day, also known as "Dooms Day", was a fateful day when countless soldiers lost their lives in the intense battle. The number of survivors on this tragic day of death and destruction was relatively small.

The central theme of this book is that D-Day was indeed one of the most harrowing events that took place during World War 2, and its significance will forever be etched in our memories.

The story is written in the first person, with the narrator serving as the main storyteller.

I truly loved this book as it provided me with in-depth knowledge about D-Day. Being a passionate fan of reading books related to World War 2 and other war stories, I found this book to be a captivating read. I would highly recommend this book to those who have an interest in learning about World War 2 and the events that unfolded during that tumultuous time.

It was an extraordinary experience.

It was as if I had been transported back in time and was actually reading a newspaper from the wartime.

The words on the page seemed to come alive, painting a vivid picture of the chaos and uncertainty that prevailed during those difficult days.

I could almost feel the tension and fear that the people of that era must have endured.

It was truly a remarkable encounter with history, and it made me realize the importance of preserving and learning from the past.

Each headline and article told a story, and I found myself completely engrossed in the details.

It was a reminder of the sacrifices that were made and the struggles that were overcome.

Overall, it was an unforgettable experience that left a lasting impression on me.

The last time I perused this book was likely shortly after its purchase, brand new, for a mere dollar, way back in 1972. With the 75th anniversary of D-day upon us, I thought it fitting to revisit it, as my modest contribution to the celebration and in homage to the heroes of yesteryears.

Since 1972, I have delved into numerous D-day books, and I can attest that this unassuming volume offers a wealth of background information often overlooked or merely touched upon in weightier tomes. True, it doesn't brim with non-stop action, but in line with the series, it is replete with a plethora of photos and maps.

Each passing year sees a diminishing number of D-day veterans among us. One such veteran, now 90, was scarcely more than a boy when he parachuted into the darkness over Normandy in 1944. During this year's commemoration, he made another leap. Granted, he was tethered to a much younger trooper and it was daylight, yet he still accomplished it! I myself wonder if I would have the courage to jump out of a perfectly serviceable airplane. I mention him for a purpose.

The book elucidates just how perilously close the situation was during the early hours of the invasion. They had a single opportunity. The die was cast. It was a matter of life or death, and many paid the ultimate price. One of the factors that thwarted the German reserves and available armor from counterattacking the congested beaches were those young men from the three airborne divisions. As is so often the case in war, circumstances conspired to wreak havoc on meticulously laid and rehearsed plans. Instead of units landing in close proximity and coalescing into well-supplied battle groups, the American and British paratroopers ended up strewn across the countryside. Lost and out of communication with their comrades, they nonetheless endeavored to carry out their missions. Individually and in pairs, they brought the war to the enemy. Ironically, it was this chaotic free-for-all that confounded and tied up numerous German units. There were no clearly identifiable enemy units; they were simply everywhere! This 90-year-old man was one of those intrepid young souls fulfilling their duty in the early hours of D-day.

Prior to concluding, there is one more aspect of this book that I must mention. The author served in WWII, and the military consultant was none other than Sir Basil Liddell Hart. Those of us who grew up reading books penned by men 'who were there' will recognize the name. If you manage to procure a copy, give it a read.

Despite the potential drawbacks that come with being the first in a series, "D-Day" by Thompson offers a well-developed introduction and a concise overview of what might be the world's busiest day ever.

One can anticipate feeling a bit inundated by the data presented (primarily regiment information and the like), given the enormous volume of manpower involved in this event. However, even in the paragraphs where a large number of figures start to accumulate, Thompson does a fairly good job of providing context and quickly moving the reader along to more human aspects (not that the numbers of soldiers and their groupings weren't "human").

For me, one enjoyable aspect was Thompson's early emphasis on the attitudes of the Allies involved, particularly the air forces. I can understand their perspective: if they, especially as heavy bombers, were causing such damage to the Axis powers, especially in their infrastructure, why bother with such a massive infantry assault? It's easy for us today to generalize the "highlights" of WW2 and other major historical events and simply assume everyone had the same mindset. But Thompson does a great job of vividly presenting the diverse mindsets going into the battle from both sides (or all sides, considering the less-than-friendly attitudes of Americans not named Eisenhower towards Montgomery and other British generals). The section on Rommel was especially fascinating, as Thompson portrays Rommel as a noble and intelligent military mind. And, as later entries in the series do, we are led to feel that only miraculous intervention brought about the ending of WW2 as it did (despite the occasional comments from Thompson suggesting a fatalistic approach to an Allied victory).

Thompson brings some aspects of the actual battle to life in a very engaging, first-person, in-the-action kind of way. The chapter on the eastern British paratroopers' assaults, in particular, was extremely riveting. It was one chapter that I wished had more detail, but in a positive way, which is an ideal compliment for this series: its best entries make you want to seek out more comprehensive versions of the subject matter. And while D-Day is as massive a day as humanity has ever witnessed, this book encourages you to learn even more about it.

This book is an integral part of Ballantine's History of World War 2. Undoubtedly, they are among the finest books ever penned about this momentous war. I delved into this particular volume way back in the mid-1970s.

For those who may not be aware, the covers of these books were color-coded. In the case of D-Day, the cover was a vibrant red. This red hue signified that the book focused on a specific battle of the war, which could range from lasting just a few hours to as long as several weeks.

D-Day offers the reader an enticing lead into the battle and presents a perspective from both sides - that of the Allies and the Germans. The book is replete with numerous photos of the battle, which vividly bring the events to life. Additionally, it contains several maps that greatly assist in following the narrative.

With approximately 160 pages, it provides a remarkable level of detail about the crucial 24 hours of 6 June 1944. It truly is a captivating and informative read for anyone interested in the history of World War 2.

I think that this book was extremely good.

It had a unique charm that captured my attention from the very beginning.

The fact that all the pictures were real added a sense of authenticity and made it feel like I was actually there in those places where the pictures were taken.

Moreover, the locations were really nice and seemed like wonderful places to visit.

I also really liked all the facts presented in the book.

They were not only interesting but also very informative, providing me with a deeper understanding of the subject matter.

Overall, this book was truly excellent and I would highly recommend it to anyone who is interested in the topic or simply enjoys a good read.

It is a book that I will definitely be keeping in my collection and referring back to in the future.
