The story is set in 2005 and revolves around an Iranian terrorist group whose primary objective is to employ a weapon of mass destruction against the city of Baghdad as retaliation for the Iran-Iraq war of the 1980s. This has the potential to destabilize the entire Middle East, and thus a clear attack on Israel might actually be feasible for these malevolent individuals.

Simultaneously, weapons dealers are indeed attempting to profit from this entire situation. Shortly after another Splinter Cell is slain, Sam Fisher - a former SEAL and CIA officer who is now an NSA Splinter Cell - is summoned to prevent any chaos from occurring. He commences his task by tracing the terrorists' weapon shipments. Unbeknownst to him, Sam's own family might be imperiled.

Splinter Cell is, without a doubt, one of the most renowned video game franchises in history. In 2004, a series of nine books was initiated, with the latest one, I believe, being published just last year. This is the first book of the series, and it chronicles the adventures of NSA Third Echelon operative Sam Fisher. Fisher is on a mission to track down an illegal arms dealing organization called the Shop and the main terrorist organization that purchases their arms, known as the Shadows, in the Middle East.

During his pursuit, Fisher's daughter Sarah is kidnapped by the terrorists in an attempt to get to him. They possess a list of operatives and are trying to eliminate them. The question remains: Can Fisher take down the Shop and the Shadows and rescue his daughter? Moreover, can he prevent the Shadows from using their weapon of mass destruction before it alters the Middle East forever?

The beginning of this book was rather disappointing. The first eighty pages read like extremely poor and amateurish fan fiction. Sam Fisher would constantly narrate lines such as "If you can't do X, you have no business being a Splinter Cell" or "X is the reason I became a Splinter Cell." Having played the games, I don't recall Sam Fisher or anyone else in the games actually referring to the operatives as "Splinter Cells." It seems that the author, Raymond Benson (using the pseudonym David Michaels for many of the books in this series), may not have played the games himself. He was perhaps given notes about them and based this book on those, which is evident in the writing.

However, after the eighty-page mark, it's as if the author suddenly woke up or learned how to put more effort into his work. The story and writing improved significantly after that point. Although this isn't a masterpiece, it ended up being a decent read. Raymond Benson only wrote the first two books in the series before宣称 he was "done with Splinter Cell" (for reasons unknown), and another author took over. Now, I'm looking forward to moving on to his second and final book, Operation Barracuda.
