As I was engrossed in reading, I could vividly hear the distinct cadence of Stuart's speech echoing in my head.

I had already listened to at least three of these captivating stories on the renowned radio program, The Vinyl Cafe. Even now, they continue to bring me great delight.

It fills me with a profound sense of gratitude that I had the wonderful privilege of attending a taping of the show before Stuart unfortunately passed away.

The experience was truly unforgettable, and it allowed me to witness firsthand the charm and talent that made his stories so beloved.

Every word he spoke seemed to come alive, painting vivid pictures in my mind and captivating my heart.

His unique storytelling style and the warmth he brought to each tale made it an absolute pleasure to listen to.

Even after all these years, his stories still hold a special place in my heart and continue to bring a smile to my face whenever I think of them.

I will always cherish the memories of that taping and the joy that Stuart's stories have brought into my life.

Stuart Mclean was truly a master storyteller. What started as a modest concept for a show evolved into one of my all-time favorite families to either read about or hear about.

The stories have a remarkable charm that makes it effortless to immerse oneself in them. My husband introduced me to Stuart Mclean probably over a decade ago. We used to religiously listen to the weekly podcast.

When I was residing in New Brunswick, prior to my permanent move to Canada, we actually had the privilege of seeing Stuart Mclean perform live. And it was an absolutely fantastic show. I am extremely glad that we got the opportunity to witness his live performance, especially considering he has now passed away. It appears that he was more popular on the East Coast. I remember on the day he passed away, I was talking about going to his show, and only one of my co-workers had heard of him, and that was because she had lived in Cape Breton at one point.

The stories revolve around the everyday adventures of a family as their two children, Sam and Stephanie, grow older. This book is divided into 4 parts, offering a diverse mix of stories. The narratives are presented from the perspectives of each character - Dave, Morley, Sam, and Stephanie.

The antics are entertaining, the lessons are valuable, and the ease and warmth of the family make one a little envious. Having become so attached to the characters through the radio show, I could vividly hear Stuart's voice in my head as I was reading these stories, which made it a breeze to devour. There were no stories in this collection that brought me to tears, which is the reason I didn't award it 5 stars. Nevertheless, it is still a beautiful and wonderful read.

Some of the stories in this collection are truly a great deal of fun. They have the power to transport the reader into different worlds and experiences.

I would say that my absolute favourite among them was "Night to Remember." It had a certain charm and appeal that made it stand out.

However, it must be noted that there were also some stories that did not quite manage to entertain me to the same extent. This is the reason behind my three-star rating.

To fully appreciate this book and its unique brand of humour, one really has to have an affinity for Stuart McLean's writing style. His words have a way of painting vivid pictures and evoking emotions.

Overall, it's a collection that has its highs and lows, but it's definitely worth a read for those who enjoy a good story with a touch of humour.

This book is truly comical, and it becomes even more so if you've ever listened to the radio program. As you read along, you can almost hear Stuart's voice in your head, and you can vividly imagine all the dramatic pauses. You can't help but cringe when the characters do something that is utterly embarrassing. It's really great!

Even if you haven't heard any of the radio programs, these books are still well worth reading. Each chapter is like a short story that depicts a day or an experience from the perspective of a particular family member. All of it is highly entertaining, especially when it comes to Dave, who seems to handle the simplest of problems in such overly dramatic ways.

It's an easy read as each chapter reads like a short story, allowing you to read one or two chapters in a single sitting. Any family would be able to relate to all of the stories. I definitely recommend this book to anyone looking for a lighthearted and enjoyable read.

I truly have an intense affection for these!

The events that unfold are uproariously inconvenient and yet so remarkably relatable.

It's to the point where my family is actually beginning to be thoroughly freaked out by my seemingly random fits of laughter.

Every time I encounter these situations, I can't help but burst into laughter.

The hilarity just takes over me.

My family, on the other hand, is left scratching their heads, wondering what on earth is so funny.

They look at me with a mix of confusion and concern.

But I can't help it.

These events are just too good.

They bring a smile to my face and a laugh to my lips.

I hope there are many more like them to come.

Good.

However, I continuously compared the written version with the podcasts that are read by Stuart himself. And the podcasts constantly emerged as superior. I believe his delivery is what makes it so. The stories are indeed good, but it is his reading that renders them truly wonderful.

I did have a liking for the stories that I hadn't previously heard. Consequently, I will most probably seek out other Vinyl Cafe books. If the option is accessible, I will simply preferentially purchase the audio CDs.

This way, I can enjoy Stuart's excellent reading while experiencing the captivating stories once again. It seems that the combination of his voice and the stories creates a unique charm that is hard to resist.

I look forward to exploring more of the Vinyl Cafe world through both the written and audio formats.

Laughing so hard, neighbours must think I have a screw loose.

Americans, you really need to get this book. It contains true Canadian humour.

Does that seem like an oxymoron? Well, think about it. Just consider some of the great Canadian comedians like Jim Carey, Dan Akroyd, Rick Moranis, Bill Murray, William Shatner, Samantha Bee, Michael J Fox, Mike Myers, Leslie Nielson, Martin Short, and Lorne Michaels.

Once you think about them, you'll start to get the idea. Canadian humour has its own unique charm and style that can really make you laugh out loud.

This book is a must-read for anyone who loves to laugh and wants to experience the hilarity of true Canadian humour. So don't wait any longer, go out and get this book today!

What an absolutely lovely collection of short stories!

This is the fourth of the set featuring stories of Dave, Morley, and the family. Just like what was expressed in the previous three reviews, the stories are a wonderful combination. They are heartwarming, endearing, and revealing of things that you've felt too. And oh, they are so easy to read in McLean's voice, making you wish he was still around gracing the CBC airwaves.

This book straddles the 4 - 5 star line for me. The stories themselves are absolutely 5 stars. Take for example, the story of Dave and his duck and the Christmas adventure. These stories have a charm that is truly captivating.

However, the organizational scheme doesn't really work. The idea of grouping by main character rather than just telling them in random or sequential order doesn't seem to add any value to the book. But the real shortcoming lies in the introductory pages, which are supposedly 'written' by each of the characters. These are entirely silly and should just be skipped. Once you get to McLean's storytelling, everything is wonderful.

What a national treasure McLean is! The stories are entirely outlandish yet eminently relatable. They pull you into a world that you just wish could suck you up from the chaos of the real one. It's a world where you can escape and find warmth and joy in the simplest of things.

I couldn't stop laughing when I read "Dave and the Duck." It was truly hilarious and had me in stitches from start to finish.

If you don't read any other essays in this collection, your time will not be in vain. This particular piece is so entertaining and engaging that it alone is worth the read.

I also enjoyed all the essays about Sam. A 10-year-old who knits, prefers Legos over school dances, and makes Mac&Cheese topped with truffles is a character I would love to meet. Sam sounds like such a unique and interesting individual, and I can't help but be curious about his adventures and experiences.

The way the author describes Sam makes him come to life on the page, and I find myself rooting for him and eager to learn more about him.

Overall, both "Dave and the Duck" and the essays about Sam are excellent reads that I would highly recommend to anyone looking for some lighthearted and enjoyable literature.
