Reading this book makes me wish I had listened to the Vinyl Cafe while Stuart was still alive. The Vinyl Cafe was a beloved radio show that Stuart McLean hosted. It was filled with heartwarming stories, beautiful music, and a sense of community. I can only imagine how wonderful it must have been to tune in every week and be transported to that world.

Stuart had a unique talent for storytelling. His characters were so vivid and real that you felt like you knew them personally. His stories often dealt with the simple pleasures of life, like family, friends, and music. They were a reminder that in a world that can sometimes seem so chaotic and overwhelming, there is still beauty and goodness to be found.

Although Stuart is no longer with us, his legacy lives on through his books and the memories of those who loved his show. Reading this book has given me a new appreciation for his work and has made me realize what I missed out on by not listening to the Vinyl Cafe when it was on the air. I will always be grateful for the stories he told and the joy he brought to so many people's lives.

The Vinyl Cafe is truly a remarkable creation. It is like a book version of a sitcom, which I have an absolute passion for.

Each story within its pages unfolds in a charming and engaging manner, much like the episodes of a beloved sitcom. The characters are vividly drawn, with their own unique personalities and quirks that immediately capture the reader's attention.

The Vinyl Cafe takes you on a journey through the lives of these characters, filled with laughter, heartwarming moments, and a touch of the ordinary that makes it all the more relatable. It's as if you are sitting in a cozy corner of a café, eavesdropping on the conversations and adventures of those around you.

Whether you're a fan of sitcoms or simply looking for a good read that will warm your heart and make you smile, The Vinyl Cafe is definitely worth checking out. It's a literary gem that will leave you coming back for more.

I just love Steward McLean's vinyl cafe stories!

One of them was the first English book I bought when I moved to the USA for an internship. It was like a magical gateway that opened up a whole new world for me. Ever since then, I have fallen deeply in love with the family and their crazy stories.

The characters in these stories are so vivid and relatable. They have their own quirks, dreams, and challenges, just like real people. I find myself laughing out loud at their antics and getting emotional when they face difficulties.

Steward McLean has a wonderful way of telling stories that draw you in and make you feel like you are a part of the vinyl cafe family. His writing is warm, humorous, and full of heart. I can't wait to read more of his stories and continue to follow the adventures of this amazing family.

More Canadiana found its way to me under the Christmas tree. This collection of monologues, similar to the Lake Wobagon stories, has been broadcast on CBC, Canada's NPR, on a program called The Vinyl Cafe. Everyman Dave, a former rock musician, and his wife Morley are a relatable couple in the midst of various mid-life crises. They have two teenagers. In a series of vignette monologues, author Stuart McLean artfully combines insight and humor to uncover their hidden flaws and fantasies. At times, the stories are uproariously funny.

The warmly depicted tales offer reassurance that basic humanity prevails over achievement and success. They remind us that beneath the surface of our lives, there are common experiences and emotions that bind us all. McLean's writing invites us to laugh at the absurdities of life while also recognizing the importance of the simple things. Whether it's a family dinner, a shared joke, or a moment of self-reflection, these stories celebrate the beauty and complexity of the human experience.

Overall, this collection of monologues is a charming and engaging read that will appeal to anyone who enjoys a good story with a touch of humor and heart.

Favourite chapter: Birthday Present

My favourite chapter is called "Birthday Present". It is a really interesting and heartwarming story. In this chapter, the main character is excitedly looking forward to his birthday. He has been thinking about what kind of present he might receive. As the day approaches, his anticipation grows.

On his birthday, when he wakes up, he finds a beautifully wrapped package waiting for him. His heart skips a beat as he opens it. Inside, he discovers a gift that is exactly what he had been longing for. It makes him extremely happy and grateful.

This chapter not only shows the excitement and joy of receiving a special birthday present but also emphasizes the importance of thoughtfulness and love in gift-giving. It reminds us that the most precious gifts are often those that come from the heart and fulfill someone's deepest desires. I love this chapter because it always brings a smile to my face and makes me feel the warmth of a special birthday moment.

Just lovely.

I have a deep affection for Vinyl Cafe. This particular collection contains some stories that are familiar to me, while others are completely new.

It's my first experience reading these stories instead of listening to them on the radio. The difference is quite palpable. However, it still manages to scratch that same wholesome and poignant itch within me.

The act of reading allows for a more intimate connection with the words and characters. I can take my time, savor each sentence, and truly immerse myself in the world that Stuart McLean has created.

Some of the familiar stories bring back memories of listening to them on the radio, while the new ones offer fresh perspectives and unexpected twists.

Overall, this book is a wonderful addition to my collection and a must-read for any Vinyl Cafe fan. It's a charming and heartwarming read that will leave you with a smile on your face and a warm feeling in your heart.

Dave, Morley and their kids have many wonderful stories.

Dave is a hardworking father who always tries his best to provide for his family. He works long hours at his job but still makes time to play with the kids and help them with their homework.

Morley is a loving mother who takes care of the household and the kids. She is always there to listen to their problems and give them advice. She also enjoys cooking and baking for the family, and the kids love her delicious meals.

The kids are all unique and have their own personalities. There's the oldest child, who is smart and responsible, always looking out for the younger ones. Then there's the middle child, who is full of energy and always getting into mischief. And finally, there's the youngest child, who is sweet and innocent and always brings a smile to everyone's face.

Together, this family has many adventures and creates memories that will last a lifetime.

I have this thought that perhaps I might end up listening to these more frequently than reading them.

There could be several reasons for this inclination. Maybe it's because listening allows me to multitask. I can do other things while still engaging with the content, like exercising or doing household chores.

Another factor could be that the auditory experience brings a different dimension to the material. The tone of the voice, the emphasis on certain words, and the overall pacing can enhance the understanding and enjoyment.

Also, sometimes, when I'm tired or my eyes are strained from too much reading, listening provides a more accessible alternative. It gives my eyes a break and allows me to relax while still consuming the information.

However, I still appreciate the value of reading. It gives me more control over the speed and pace of consumption. I can pause, re-read, and analyze the text at my own convenience.

In conclusion, while I think I might lean towards listening more, both reading and listening have their own unique advantages, and I'll likely continue to use both methods depending on the situation and my mood.

Nothing like being sick to help me put a dent in my reading list!

I have a deep love for Stuart McLean. His works always manage to capture my heart with their unique charm. So, don't expect an unbiased review from me. I not only relish his humorous writing style but also tune in to his radio show regularly. As a result, some of the stories in this collection were already familiar to me.

I would have to admit that this isn't my absolute favorite among his collections. However, that doesn't mean I didn't enjoy it. In fact, I still found great pleasure in reading through the pages. The stories are filled with his trademark wit and warmth, making them a joy to experience.

My one gripe is with the four "introductions" that are supposed to be written by real people. To me, they just don't seem authentic. Dave's introduction sounds more like it was penned by Stuart McLean himself rather than the actual Dave. Morley comes across as far too dismissive, which doesn't sit well with me. Stephanie is portrayed as a hopelessly self-centered nitwit, a caricature of a California girl at her worst (complete with the dreaded "like, totally!"). And Sam's introduction makes him seem too childish. I really didn't like any of these introduction sections. But the good news is that they're easy enough to skip if you happen to agree with me. Just go straight to the stories, which are the real reason to pick up this book in the first place.

As is the case whenever I read Vinyl Cafe stories, this one elicited numerous audible laughs from me.

My favorite segments are all concise one-liners. Regrettably, without the context, you may not fully appreciate their humor. However, if you're curious to discover what's so amusing, you can always take the initiative and go read the book!

For instance, on page 107, it is stated, "There was a deficit of caterers." This simple sentence holds a certain charm and wit that becomes more evident within the context of the story.

Another example can be found on page 121, where it says, "''It is very European,'' he said one night. ''It's like having a goat down there.''" This rather unexpected comparison adds a touch of absurdity and hilarity to the narrative.

These one-liners are just a small sampling of the humorous gems that can be found within the pages of the Vinyl Cafe book.
