Given that it's my first book of this series by the artbook publisher Taschen, I am somewhat surprised by its brevity and its emphasis on biographical details. Here, numerous large or page-size panels are reproduced to provide readers with an introduction to Rothko's painting. However, at times, their arrangement and order do not conform as closely to the text as one might anticipate.
The text offers an accessible biography with minimal effort expended on interpreting his paintings. It can be read by anyone interested in this painter, even without prior knowledge. Nevertheless, I must admit that I am a bit disappointed that Rothko's shift in his painterly direction is not given more in-depth discussion. This aspect seems to be somewhat overlooked, which could have added greater depth and understanding to the overall exploration of his work.
