A very entertaining look at the history of the sideshow along with some of its secrets. It's truly fascinating to explore this unique aspect of entertainment. Nickell does a great job of keeping things moving at a good pace, which makes the reading experience quite engaging. However, there were a few times that I wish he had gone more in depth. For example, when discussing certain historical events or the evolution of specific sideshow acts, a bit more detailed analysis would have been beneficial. It would have allowed the reader to gain a more comprehensive understanding of the subject matter. Nevertheless, overall, it's an enjoyable and informative read that offers a peek into the mysterious world of the sideshow.

A good overview of an interesting topic can truly capture one's attention.

In this case, the topic revolves around the use of mirrors to create illusions. It is fascinating to note that the illusions are mostly all done with mirrors.

The way mirrors can distort and manipulate our perception is truly remarkable.

However, it is important to distinguish between the illusions and the realities/oddities.

The realities/oddities are not created by mirrors but rather exist independently.

This contrast between the illusions and the realities is what gives this topic its unique attraction.

It makes us question our own perception and the nature of what is real.

Overall, this topic offers a captivating exploration of the power of mirrors and the mysteries of perception.

Often what you see is not the whole story.

This book is truly a gem as it lifts the veil on an all too forgotten piece of history. It takes you outside the big top, to the place where the real show actually takes place.

The experience of reading this book was as enlightening as it was amazing. I very thoroughly enjoyed every single page of it. It is a wonderful blending of historical fact and cultural heritage, which makes it not only interesting but also educational.

If you're ever curious as to what goes on behind the scenes or just want a better look at a sadly all but extinct form of entertainment, then don't hesitate. Hurry, hurry, hurry, step right up and dive right in. You won't be disappointed. I give this book a 10/10 and highly recommend it to anyone with an interest in history, culture, or just a good story.

The Butler Did It

In a mysterious and secluded mansion, there was a wealthy family living a seemingly peaceful life. However, one fateful night, a heinous crime occurred. The master of the house was found brutally murdered in his study. The police were immediately called in to investigate the case. As they searched the crime scene, they found several clues that pointed towards an unlikely suspect - the butler.

The butler, who had served the family for many years, was known for his loyalty and discretion. But as the investigation deepened, it was discovered that he had a dark secret. He had been embezzling money from the family for a long time and was afraid that his misdeeds would be exposed. In a desperate attempt to cover his tracks, he had killed the master of the house.

The butler was arrested and put on trial. The evidence against him was overwhelming, and he was found guilty of murder. He was sentenced to life in prison, where he would spend the rest of his days regretting his actions. The mystery of the master's death had finally been solved, and justice had been served.

The first half of this book was truly awesome. It presented a wealth of interesting and engaging information that really captured my attention.

However, it does have a bit of a drawback in that it reads quite a lot like a textbook. The writing style can be a bit dry and academic at times, which might make it a bit of a slog for some readers.

To get the most out of this book, I would highly recommend picking and choosing the sections which interest you personally. There are some really fascinating topics covered, but you don't have to read the whole thing cover to cover.

One thing that really stood out to me was the section on sideshow freaks. I was really looking forward to reading about this, but unfortunately, it ended up boring me to sleep. I'm not sure if it was the way it was written or if I just wasn't as interested in this topic as I thought I would be.

Overall, I think this book has a lot to offer, but it does require a bit of effort on the part of the reader to really get the most out of it.

I would have given this book a higher rating, but I believe its strength also has a hint of weakness.

The book is incredibly comprehensive. Nickell, an experienced performer himself, fills this book with numerous stories, biographies, and details. He examines every angle and every type of sideshow. He provides a historical overview from ancient times to the present. That's great. However, it's a vast amount of information, far too much for the casual reader. If you're anticipating a pleasant, easy historical narrative, this isn't it. On the other hand, if you desire a book that can be described as encyclopedic in nature, then this might be the book for you.

I don't think it's a book to be read cover to cover. Read the introduction, and like in any carnival or midway, select the items that interest you. Don't forget to make your way to the exit as well. I attempted to read it cover to cover, and I did find it a bit overwhelming. This is more of a book to browse and explore. Additionally, the book is written in a very academic tone. It feels more like I'm reading a series of academic papers, complete with in-text citations (which, as a reader, I found irritating. Those should have been end-notes).

That being said, it does cover a very interesting topic and looks at a craft that is nearly extinct. It does so with respect, dignity, good research, and thoroughness. There are also some excellent photos and illustrations in the book.

Overall, a book that may be more suitable for academics than for lay readers. It's still worth reading, or at least skimming and finding the types of shows that interest you and learning about them. Also, I think it may inspire people to want to read more on specific topics. And that's always a good thing.

Normally, I don't take this long to complete a book. However, in my defense, there was a great deal happening in my life, which meant I wasn't able to read as frequently. Additionally, this book was filled with an abundance of fascinating sideshow knowledge. I wanted to take my time and thoroughly read through every bit of it.

When I began reading this book, I thought I would be learning more about all the performers in sideshows, both past and present. Indeed, I did learn about the people, but I also discovered all about the gaffs. For me, this was both cool and, in a way, it spoiled the magic of sideshows for me. Haha.

It was a really interesting read, and I also appreciate how Nickell supported his points with sources. (I think citing sources is quite cool.) It was definitely a great read, and I'm glad I picked it up.

This book is written in an incredibly self-indulgent manner.

It is filled with a disturbing number of photos of the author standing beside the relevant specimen being photographed.

It gives the impression that you are reading his personal travelogue driven by an obsession.

Moreover, he feels the necessity to define words like "obsese" to ensure that you, the reader, can follow him.

That being said, I have a penchant for some sideshow trivia, and it was indeed amply provided in this book.

The combination of the author's self-indulgence and the interesting trivia makes for a rather unique reading experience.

While the self-indulgence might put off some readers, those who enjoy unusual facts and a peek into the author's obsessive world will find this book quite engaging.

It's a book that will either fascinate you or leave you scratching your head, depending on your personal preferences.

Overall, it's a curious blend of self-expression and trivia that is worth a look for those with an open mind.
