This was an extremely comprehensive exploration of Lewis Carroll's life.

Perhaps it was a touch too comprehensive.

I'm not certain if he was truly interesting enough to warrant approximately 550 pages dedicated to him.

I'll confess that I skimmed through some sections.

However, on the whole, it was captivating and very well-researched.

The author delved deep into every aspect of Carroll's existence, from his childhood and education to his literary works and personal relationships.

Despite the length, there were many fascinating details that emerged, such as his love for photography and his unique way of thinking.

Overall, it was a worthwhile read for anyone interested in Lewis Carroll or the Victorian era.

While it may not have been a page-turner from start to finish, it provided a wealth of information and insights that made it a valuable addition to any bookshelf.

Whew. This was indeed a long one. Cohen has crafted an interesting and highly engaging biography. It is truly a remarkable piece of work that delves deep into the life of the subject. However, it must be noted that he gets some significant things wrong, as later evidence from Leach clearly demonstrates. Nevertheless, I still hold a great appreciation for the many dimensions of Carroll that this book manages to capture. Cohen has done an excellent job of presenting a multifaceted view of Carroll, exploring not only his well-known achievements but also the lesser-known aspects of his life. The book is filled with fascinating details and anecdotes that bring Carroll to life on the page. Despite its flaws, it remains a valuable contribution to the literature on Carroll and a must-read for anyone interested in his life and work.

What a strange man!

In Cohen's version, he emerges as someone who has managed, through faith and unwavering iron discipline, to contain the fixation on very young girls that, despite his efforts, continued to trouble him with what he regarded as sinful thoughts.

It is truly a complex and rather disturbing portrait.

On the other hand, the real Alice is presented as the love of his life.

One wonders how these two aspects of his character and his relationships could coexist.

Perhaps it is a testament to the human psyche's ability to hold such contradictions.

Or maybe it is a reflection of Cohen's own internal struggle and the lengths he went to in an attempt to reconcile his desires with his moral compass.

Either way, it makes for a fascinating and somewhat perplexing study of a man's inner world.

This is perhaps the ultimate biography of Carroll.

It is an all-encompassing and detailed exploration of a complex individual.

Moreover, it is entirely readable and engaging.

It only becomes dull in the math-related sections. (After all, Carroll was a mathematician.)

The writing is of a very high standard.

One can truly get a comprehensive understanding of Carroll's life and personality through this bio.

The author has done an excellent job of presenting the information in an interesting and accessible way.

Even those who are not particularly interested in math can still enjoy reading about Carroll's other aspects.

This biography is a must-read for anyone who wants to know more about this fascinating figure.

However, towards the end of the biography, it does start to feel a little bit dull. The pacing slows down, and some of the details seem to drag on. But this is a minor flaw in an otherwise outstanding work. I'm not going to edit this. It will just be my thoughts, and some of what he wrote.

His sister named Lucy O'finner grew constantly thinner and thinner. The reason was plain. She slept in the rain and was never allowed any dinner.

I understand they didn't have a lot of food, but I don't think I would write this stuff when I was young.

He went to many schools. Evil behavior learned that idols scale of values moral behavior stood above gentlemanly conduct and above that intellectual achievement.

He met Alice in 1856. I believe she was like 4.

Nonsense Literature.

He used their names a lot.

And that in house of joy, lessons serve but to annoy. If in any house you find children of a gentle mind, each the others pleasing others.

I thought it was funny he never used Harry the brother's name, but he did like him and tutor him in Latin.

It was neat to see how he got some of the ideals for his book.

Page 166 was kinda sick.

By page 300 I was getting a little bored.

I hope this helped some.

Overall, this piece provides a glimpse into the author's thoughts and observations about the subject matter. There are various elements such as the description of Lucy's situation, the mention of different schools and values, the encounter with Alice, and the use of names in the context of nonsense literature. The author also shares their personal reactions to different parts of the book, finding some parts sick or getting bored as they progress. It's an interesting collection of thoughts that could potentially spark further discussion or exploration.
