I really liked this book written by Maya Angelou.

It was composed of numerous short essays that delved into her personal experiences as well as those of women in general.

The snippets she shared about her own life were truly captivating and piqued my interest to a great extent.

In fact, it made me so curious that I decided to find out if she had written a biography or an autobiography.

After some research, I discovered that she has a total of 6 autobiographies.

Now, I have decided to start with the one titled 'I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings'.

I'm looking forward to delving deeper into her life and understanding the woman behind the words through her own accounts.

I believe it will be an enlightening and inspiring read.

This is a small but significant book that predominantly consists of a compilation of short writings penned by the remarkable Maya Angelou. Some of these pieces are just a few paragraphs in length, while others extend to a few pages. Published in 1994, in today's digital age, it could easily be regarded as a collection of blog posts.

Angelou delves into a wide array of topics, including women empowerment, racism, religion, struggle, family, and much more. Like most books of this nature, which is a collection of diverse writings, there are certain articles that truly stand out as excellent, while others leave the reader with the impression that they deserve more in-depth consideration. And typically, by the end, one finds oneself longing for a much larger and more comprehensive book that has a better flow and continuity, and delves deeply into every aspect.

Maya Angelou is indeed a wonderful writer whose prose has the power to evoke a great deal of thought. However, it seems a pity that her talent is somewhat wasted on these relatively small musings.

Nonetheless, as I mentioned earlier, there are several outstandingly good pieces within the book. I was particularly drawn to the story of Annie Johnson, who managed to extricate herself from extremely difficult circumstances through sheer hard work and determination. Angelou's account of how her choice of dress created difficulties for her young son was both touching and relatable. Additionally, the amazing story of an elderly couple who simply desired to hear the sounds emanating from their servant's quarters because they had lost the joy in their own lives is truly captivating. Angelou has a remarkable ability to tell anecdotes and stories that can linger in our minds for a long time.

On the other hand, the weaker sections of the book are those where Angelou attempts to tackle a particular topic and express her ideas. It's not that her views are incorrect; rather, they often come across as quick opinions that lack the necessary depth and elaboration. In some respects, they can seem almost superficial. For instance, when Angelou discusses how travel can broaden one's mind, it feels like a rather throwaway article. A more engaging and substantial piece would have been to explain in detail how we are all so profoundly influenced by the environment in which we exist that we are often completely unaware of how the rest of the world lives, what their hopes, dreams, aspirations, and ways of thinking are. It's important to note that people who are different from us are not necessarily better. In fact, some may even be more prejudiced than we are. However, getting to know one another helps us all to work through our preconceived notions and mutual hostility, thereby contributing to the creation of a better world.

In conclusion, this is a good book, but it does suffer from a lack of sufficient detail and development in some of the essays. Angelou should have invested more effort into fleshing out some of her ideas to truly do justice to her remarkable talent and the important topics she addresses.

This is a compilation of concise personal essays that detail the lessons Maya Angelou has learned and the approach to life she has formulated.

I believe that had I perused this work 10 years ago, I might have regarded it as overly simplistic. However, having endured significant personal turmoil over the past decade and emerging from it relatively unscathed, I now find myself on friendly terms with Maya and in accordance with her own insights regarding life.

Indeed, I could even refer to this volume of wisdom as her rendition of The Tao. It contains profound nuggets of truth and practical advice that can guide us through the various challenges and joys of life.

Maya Angelou's words have the power to inspire, comfort, and enlighten, making this collection a valuable addition to anyone's library.

Woman should be tough, tender, laugh as much as possible, and live long lives.

The struggle for equality has been a long and arduous one, but it continues unabated. Women around the world are still facing discrimination and inequality in various aspects of their lives, such as education, employment, and politics.

However, there are many remarkable women warriors who are armed with wit and courage, and they are leading the way in the fight for equality. These women are not afraid to speak up and take action, and they are making a real difference in the world.

Her words and works have inspired generations of people around the world, and she will always be remembered as a pioneer and a hero.

139 pages simply isn't sufficient. I yearn for MORE!

This book is composed of numerous short essays that are brimming with Maya Angelou's astute wisdom and insatiable curiosity. Her warmth and strength radiate through the pages so exquisitely.

I had a rather complex feeling towards this book. On one hand, I truly liked it. However, I couldn't help but be put off by Maya Angelou's inclination to depict the world as degenerating. Passages such as, "we have come to a place, a time, when virtue is no longer considered a virtue. The mention of virtue is ridiculed, and even the word itself has fallen out of favor," gave me a sense of her believing in some "good old days," which I don't think is accurate. There have always been both virtuous people and those who try to malign and ignore virtue. Generalizing her experience of a specific place and time into a worldview that portrays the whole world as degenerating is not beneficial, and I never appreciate such a view in any work I read.

Nevertheless, I must admit that I found many passages in the book to be extremely uplifting and beautiful. In fact, I was so captivated by a particular passage at the end that I decided to buy the book. It said, "Every person needs to take one day away. A day in which one consciously separates the past from the future. Jobs, lovers, family, employers, and friends can exist one day without any one of us, and if our egos permit us to confess, they could exist eternally in our absence. Each person deserves a day away in which no problems are confronted, no solutions searched for. Each of us needs to withdraw from the cares which will not withdraw from us. We need hours of aimless wandering or spates of time sitting on park benches, observing the mysterious world of ants and the canopy of treetops."

Another wonderful passage that caught my attention was, "Living life as art requires a readiness to forgive. I do not mean that you should suffer fools gladly, but rather remember your own shortcomings, and when you encounter another with flaws, don't be eager to righteously seal yourself away from the offender forever. Take a few breaths and imagine yourself having just committed the action which has set you at odds."

I have a great deal of love and respect for Maya Angelou, but I'm still on the lookout for that one special book by her that I will cherish and keep on my shelf, eager to return to it time and time again.

(Read 6/2009) "Wouldn't Take Nothing for my Journey Now" and "Even the Stars Look Lonesome" by Maya Angelou are remarkable works.

Although not part of the autobiographical series starting with "I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings", they are like a collection of small vignettes exploring various topics.

The beauty of these two works and the later "Letter to my Daughter" is their abundance of sage advice and examination of the human condition. Maya Angelou fearlessly shares her life experiences, allowing everyone to relate on a human level.

As humans, we can reflect on our experiences and learn from them, as well as from the lives of others. These books cover a wide range of topics, such as House vs. Home, Africa, Oprah Winfrey, Aging, Sensuality and Sexuality, Fame, Anger/Rage/Violence, Being a Woman, How to Live Well, and The Power of Faith and Spirituality.

Like many of her other published pieces, these two books make one feel as if they are having a conversation with a dear and beloved friend, receiving sage advice, wisdom, and a sense of peace.

This review is going to be done in a completely different way as my usual review style might distort the message it conveys. I have made up my mind that for this one, I will quote phrases, sections, and pages from the book that offer some kind of motivation for living and highlight the essence of life.

“If I am comfortable within my own skin, I have the power to make others feel at ease in theirs, even though my primary reason for choosing fashion is not their feelings. When I feel good in my skin and clothes, I am then free to let my body move with its natural grace and gesture. And I am so comfortable that whatever I wear looks good on me, even in the eyes of external fashion critics.”

“When I think of death, and lately this idea has occurred with alarming frequency, I seem to be at peace with the thought that one day a dawn will break when I will no longer be among those living in this strange and humorous valley. I can accept the idea of my own passing, but I am unable to come to terms with the death of anyone else.”

“I looked up the road I was traveling and back the way I had come, and since I was not satisfied, I decided to step off the road and blaze a new trail for myself.”

“Living life as art demands a willingness to forgive” “because of the routines we follow, we often forget that life is a continuous adventure.”

“We need to remember that we are created with creativity and can invent new scenarios as often as they are required.”

“Too many of our leaders avoid the higher moral path and take the route to satisfy their greed while spouting empty rhetoric.”

“Remember, you were searching for a job when you lost the one you just had. So you’ll simply be looking for a job one more time.”

“Whining is not only ungracious but can also be perilous. It can alert a brute that a victim is nearby.”

My concluding thought for this book is as follows: “We must recreate an attractive and caring attitude in our homes and in our world. If our children are to approve of themselves, they must see that we approve of ourselves. If we persist in self-disrespect and then expect our children to respect themselves, it is like breaking their bones and then insisting that they win Olympic gold medals in the hundred-yard dash.”

How can this remarkable woman express so much with such concise and poetic language?

Here is a small collection of self-centered mini-sermons crafted for the god of life experience. It's like a cup of chicken soup for the soul, but for the bookshelf.

These words seem to hold a certain charm, as if they have the power to touch the hearts and minds of those who read them.

Perhaps it is the simplicity and elegance of her expression that makes these sermonettes so captivating.

They offer a moment of reflection and inspiration in the midst of our busy lives.

Whether you are seeking guidance, motivation, or just a bit of comfort, this collection might just be the perfect thing to pick up and read.

It's a reminder that sometimes, the simplest words can have the greatest impact.

It was like a wonderful journey from start to finish. For me, this book is an absolute must-read. I highly recommend it to anyone who is looking for an engaging and intellectually stimulating read.
