I must admit that I didn't have a favorable impression of it. Undoubtedly, it was well-written. Inis, as a character, was highly believable, someone with whom I could easily empathize. However, when it came to the rest of it, my answer was a resounding no. It simply wasn't my sort of thing at all. I'm sorry to say this, but that's just the way I feel. Maybe others might find it appealing, but for me, it failed to capture my interest. I tried to give it a chance, but in the end, it just didn't click. I hope that in the future, I'll come across something that suits my taste better.

A fascinating insight into unusual characters offers a captivating look into the lives and minds of those who stand out from the crowd. I was truly enamored with reading about such extreme personalities. Their unique traits, behaviors, and perspectives were both intriguing and engaging. It had me completely hooked from the very beginning. Each character presented a new and unexpected aspect that kept me eagerly turning the pages. The author's vivid descriptions and detailed accounts brought these characters to life, making them seem almost real. It was as if I was peering into their world and experiencing their adventures along with them. This exploration of unusual characters provided a refreshing and thought-provoking read that I thoroughly enjoyed.

From the back cover;

Inis has fled from her husband and children. Her new neighbor, Trixie, is a remarkable 84-year-old hymn-singing Salvation Army veteran. On the surface, Trixie's life appears calm, but beneath lies not one, but three distinct personalities. One of them is extremely private and perilous.

Never having heard of the author before, I chanced upon this book in a second-hand bookshop. The blurb sent a shiver down my spine, piquing my curiosity.

***

After the excitement in the bookshop, I was certain the book would disappoint. However, it turned out to be a great, engaging read, especially when I was in desperate need of distraction. I found it particularly fascinating to compare this book with K-PAX, both dealing with multiple personality disorder (or perhaps not?), but in completely different styles.

…But what should I do? Travel two hundred miles. Rent a drab little house in a dull post-industrial city. Keep doing what I do. Take photographs. Scald the edges of my mind that try to bleed into the past. Suffer. Play it safe. Even in my flight, my grand gesture, my great escape. I play it safe. I do it the English, female way, like a timid little hen. I am no eagle; I am a scared brown hen, pecking away. I am small, pathetic, and hindered by my limitations.

Based on this book, I will definitely be on the lookout for more works by Glaister.

I remember really enjoying this experience.

Her knowledge and expertise in the field of writing were truly remarkable. She had a unique way of teaching that inspired and motivated me.

Under her guidance, I was able to improve my writing skills significantly.

She provided valuable feedback and suggestions that helped me to refine my work and bring out the best in my writing.

I am truly grateful to have had Lesley as my tutor and I will always remember the impact she had on my writing journey.

I did feel drawn into this story,

but I didn't feel like Inis' character was someone I could relate to or feel empathy for.

Trixie's story was more interesting, which I think was the point.

Perhaps Inis' dull and insipid life was meant to be a contrast.

Some of the writing style in parts didn't appeal to me, namely the way in which the author portrayed confusion.

But that's just a personal preference.

I did like the last few chapters, but I would have liked more of a thrill maybe?

Overall, the story had its moments, but it didn't completely captivate me.

The characters could have been developed more deeply, and the plot could have had more twists and turns to keep me on the edge of my seat.

However, I can see that the author was trying to create a certain atmosphere and tell a particular story, and for that, they deserve some credit.

Maybe with more practice and refinement, the author will be able to write a more engaging and exciting novel in the future.

The situation was extremely unsettling. It was a state of affairs that kept one on the edge of their seat, filled with an air of mystery and anticipation. The events unfolding were quite suspenseful, leaving everyone wondering what would happen next.

Every sound, every movement, seemed to hold a hidden meaning, adding to the overall sense of unease. The atmosphere was thick with tension, as if a storm was about to break.

People's hearts were pounding, their minds racing with thoughts and speculations. It was a moment when time seemed to stand still, and the only thing that mattered was the outcome of the unknown.

The uncertainty was both thrilling and terrifying, making it impossible to look away or escape from the grip of this highly unsettling and quite suspenseful situation.

A very unsettling read indeed.

Lesley Glaister has crafted a story that keeps you guessing all the way through.

The two main characters are particularly intriguing. Trixie, an older woman with multiple personalities, is a complex and enigmatic figure. One moment she could seem harmless, perhaps even endearing, but the next there is a hint of something more sinister lurking beneath the surface.

Inis, the runaway young mother, is also a fascinating character. Suffering from postnatal depression, she has a frightening episode that forces her to confront her inner turmoil. This experience seems to have a profound impact on her, as it causes her to reevaluate her situation and begin to miss her children and home.

One can only hope that she made it back safely to the arms of her loved ones.

The story is filled with tension and mystery, leaving the reader on the edge of their seat until the very end.

It is a thought-provoking and engaging read that will stay with you long after you have turned the final page.

I truly relished this book. It was an absolute page-turner that kept me hooked from start to finish. It belongs to my favorite genre, which I classify as psychological thriller.

The story revolves around two or three women. There's Inis, an overwhelmed mother of two who desperately needs a break. You're left uncertain about where she's headed. Then there's her neighbor, Trixi, who has an intriguing backstory and an unexpected alter ego.

The book is masterfully written, with a pacing that builds up to a great climax. I'm glad it didn't overdo the climax and, in many ways, it was believable. I could definitely identify with Inis and her longing for solitude and a bit of time to redefine herself. It's well-written entertainment that provides both excitement and a touch of relatability.

Overall, this book was a great read and I would highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys psychological thrillers. It offers a unique and engaging story that will keep you on the edge of your seat.
