Usually, I assign a rating of 5 to all Carl Hiaasen books. This is because I have a great appreciation for his unique sense of humor and his fascinating anti-establishment characters. However, this particular book is the first action-crime one he wrote, and it's clear that he hadn't yet fully developed his trademark humorous style. For instance, don't anticipate the appearance of Skink and his gang in this volume.
It does contain the typical elements of Florida drug wars and some rather peculiar Miami area characters. Nevertheless, they aren't as sharply defined as those in his later works. Despite this, I still found the book enjoyable to read, and it managed to hold my interest throughout, even though some of the情节 were quite unbelievable. In his later, more humorous books, the issue of believability doesn't really concern me much.
I have decided that I will go on to read the other two books in this series. I will make an effort not to compare it unfavorably with his later works, but rather to appreciate it for what it is. I'm curious to see how Hiaasen's writing evolved from this initial foray into the action-crime genre.
