This text reads more like a self-help book than a serious statement from a political candidate.

From his “Twelve STOPS to Restoring America’s Greatness” to his rehashing of Clinton’s “I’m from Hope” line, Huckabee seems more interested in inspiring us all to be happier, healthier citizens than actually addressing any of America’s problems.

In an age of rampant corporate corruption and increasingly aggressive foreign policy, it’s crucial for presidential candidates to exhibit responsible leadership, emphasize accountability, and restore rationality to government. Huckabee’s response of “stop being cynical” is rather simplistic. Apparently, the decline of America’s credibility is not a matter of concern; we just need to stop watching the news and those uncomfortable documentaries. This is a complete misreading of history. He criticizes Kerry’s negative campaign points in 2004 and applauds Reagan’s “Morning in America” in 1984. But remember Reagan? The guy who ignored AIDS for a good six or seven years?

Huckabee is reasonable on issues such as healthcare and immigration, but his comments on other issues are often fallacious or absurd. While his stance on being pro-life as a Christian conservative is understandable, the “Fetal Protection Act” seems utterly ridiculous. He is overly proud of this measure to make it a crime to assault or murder a pregnant woman. Wasn’t it already a crime? Do we really need two laws for the same thing? Murder is a crime, plain and simple. This kind of unnecessary legislation is exactly what sensible libertarians should oppose.

Another predictable position is his anti-gay marriage stance, which he claims is not “anti” at all. This sounds very similar to Bush’s assertion that restricting the definition of marriage is actually done in its defense. Here’s a quick logic lesson: if you propose to narrow the definition of something, you are indeed against the things you are excluding from that definition. Huckabee equates gay rights with a broader movement that undermines the sanctity of marriage, citing no-fault divorces and the growing ease of getting married. What annoys me about this whole “sacred tradition” nonsense is that it is not historically accurate. Those who invoke this tradition deliberately overlook its origins. Until very recently, marriage was often a transaction where fathers traded their daughters for financial or political gain. It was a land grab scheme, and the “sanctity” was just a justification. The daughter was unlikely to object as it would mean defying not only her parents but also God. These were not happy marriages, regardless of whether divorce was allowed or not. Even the relatively happy marriages did not resemble the modern concept of marriage in any but the most superficial ways. Marriage for love is a new phenomenon. Many of the problems we have with it today are more accurately due to the growing pains as society adjusts to this new concept, rather than being blamed on an “anti-marriage” agenda.

Finally, Huckabee is completely wrong when discussing Iraq. He poses the question: what if Hussein had possessed WMDs and we didn’t attack? Well, the fact is, he didn’t. The rhetoric in this section is simply absurd. The day we start invading sovereign nations just because it is logically possible that they could pose a threat is the day we truly become an evil empire.

Apart from a few refreshing examples of rationality, this book seems to only exemplify the worst mistakes of the GOP in recent years. Why is it that otherwise reasonable people sound like the lunatic fringe when the topics of religion and culture are raised? Shouldn’t a philosophy of keeping government out of people’s wallets also extend to keeping it out of their bedrooms? I’m not expecting a revolution, just a little consistency.

I have never read a “campaign” book before. However, I was handed this one for free after having a conversation with Mike Huckabee’s Iowa Political Director at the annual NICHE conference. Gov. Huckabee’s From Hope to Higher Ground is not only eminently readable but also highly insightful.

“Hope” refers to Hope, Arkansas, the place where Gov. Huckabee hails from. “Higher Ground” can be seen as a metaphor for numerous things. It could mean improving ourselves, enhancing our families, and bettering our nation. Additionally, it can also allude to Gov. Huckabee’s presidential aspirations. This metaphor works extremely well in this concise 196-page read.

The book presents us with 12 “Stops” to restoring America’s greatness. These stops pertain to the things that we must cease doing. What makes this interesting is that the book not only serves to introduce us to Gov. Huckabee’s beliefs and political stances but also offers us sound advice. Thus, the book will have significance beyond 2008, just like, I am certain, his earlier titles: Quit Digging Your Grave with a Knife and Fork and Character Makes a Difference.

For example, we should stop “being cynical,” stop “abusing our planet,” stop “robbing the taxpayers,” stop “the heat and turn on the light for hot issues,” stop “the loss of America’s prestige at home and abroad,” and – my personal favorite – stop “being a selfish citizen,” among others. Gov. Huckabee weaves into each chapter specific standards to which we should hold our political leaders accountable and specific principles by which we should be governed. He also shares stories from his life, including his ten-and-a-half years as Governor of Arkansas, to illustrate his stops. At the end of each chapter, Gov. Huckabee lists “12 Action Steps” to stop doing whatever the subject of the chapter is. For instance, in “STOP the Culture of Chronic Disease,” he lists, “Eliminate processed sugar from your diet as much as possible, if not totally;” in “STOP Being Cynical,” he lists “have regular conversations with people very unlike you.” I truly appreciate the specificity of the suggestions, which reveals a great deal about the kind of person Gov. Huckabee endeavors to be.

Gov. Huckabee comes across in this book – which he wrote without a ghostwriter – exactly as he does in debates, speeches, and campaign stops: articulate, humorous, kind, humble, and spot-on regarding the important issues of the day. If you have any interest in Gov. Huckabee’s campaign, this book will provide you with excellent insights into the man. Even if you are not interested in his campaign, this book will still offer you valuable perspectives on “restoring America’s greatness.”

"From Hope to Higher Ground" gives an impression that is quite distinct. It doesn't seem to be a typical book from someone eyeing a run for major office. Instead, it bears a resemblance to a sort of New International Version of The Bible, albeit with a reduced usage of "thee's" and "thou's".

Having said that, it's important to note that Huckabee does present several valid points that merit closer examination. Although I might not concur with his positions on gay marriage, abortion, gun control, and our national drug policy, his idea of lowering the national debt, eliminating the IRS, and directing more funds into our school systems is rather intelligent.

If one is in search of an unbiased political book, this isn't the one. Likewise, if the aim is to find a religious text, this also doesn't fit the bill. Instead, it occupies a middle ground between the two, presenting a unique blend of political and religious undertones that makes it an interesting read for those who are open to exploring such a combination.

This guy should be our next president. The hope he writes about is truly contagious. Those who criticize MH for his politics and "churchy-behavior" really need to read this book first and take a hard look in the mirror.

This book outlines very practical steps on how we can make an immediate positive impact for our communities and for our country. Huck is a man who "preaches" (no pun intended) about getting back to how our country was originally designed. There is none of this partisan politics, bickering, and hair-splitting on irrelevant issues. Huckabee refers to caring about our country more than ourselves. Does that sound familiar?

Huckabee really has some good things to say that are pretty hard to dispute. He talks about family, education, and character. I always like comparing Huck's books with those of other politicians' books. It seems that most other politicians talk of party unity, complain all the time, and are more concerned about themselves and "their people" rather than the country as a whole.
