This is one of my absolute favorite Hiaasen works.

Skink, the main character, is truly a gem. He not only brings countless laughs with his antics but also has the ability to make you stop and think seriously.

There are other great characters in the story as well. Some of them vividly illustrate what true friendship really means and how it can influence us in our weakest moments. Others showcase the depth of character, adding more layers and complexity to the narrative.

And let's not forget the numerous scenes that are just plain fun. They make the reading experience truly enjoyable and engaging.

If you have never had the pleasure of reading Hiaasen and you live in or frequently visit Florida, you are really missing out on a real treat. His works offer a unique perspective on the state and its people, filled with humor, heart, and thought-provoking themes.

So, do yourself a favor and pick up one of his books. You won't be disappointed.

This is Carl Hiaasen's third installment in his "Skink" series.

It is penned with his trademark satirical humor, which never fails to amuse and engage the readers.

Skink, the central character, is a former Florida governor who has taken a rather unorthodox path.

A powerful and destructive hurricane strikes South Florida, sending all the characters on a journey that will ultimately lead them to cross paths, whether it be for the better or the worse.

The author has done an excellent job of developing the characters, highlighting both their flaws and their assets.

From start to finish, I thoroughly enjoyed this book.

It truly captures the essence of the strange and sometimes wild Florida,展现出 its worst aspects in a humorous and entertaining way.

If you're a fan of Carl Hiaasen's work or simply enjoy a good satirical mystery, this book is definitely worth a read.

The author masterfully combines the best elements of Elmore Leonard, Thomas Pynchon, and Damon Runyon, thereby constructing a rogues gallery of characters who find themselves embroiled in a hilarious sequence of exquisitely detailed events.

The action commences immediately following the onslaught of a superstorm hurricane that strikes southern Florida. It introduces the reader to an array of reprobates and innocent bystanders of various kinds, all vying to take advantage of or deal with the aftermath of the damages inflicted by this natural disaster.

The majority of the amusement stems from the crazy cross-section of individuals who are thrown together. There is a reclusive former governor, a gold-digger, a career criminal thug, a corrupt public servant, a self-obsessed ad man, and a sprinkling of seemingly "normal" individuals who provide a sense of balance to the others. Although it is difficult to fully empathize with any of the characters, it is equally impossible not to identify, in some small way, with their plights and dilemmas.

This unique blend of characters and circumstances creates a narrative that is both entertaining and thought-provoking, inviting the reader to engage with the story on multiple levels.

Once again, Carl Hiaasen showcases precisely why he is the undisputed master of character development.

He ingeniously employs the hurricane as a powerful metaphor for the tumultuous and dramatic events that his diverse cast of characters undergoes. Each character in his story is distinctively strong in their own particular fashion. There is a unique charm and strength that sets them apart.

Moreover, each character is also endowed with a strange and endearing idiosyncrasy that adds an extra layer of depth and authenticity to their personas.

To top it all off, a liberal sprinkling of crisp irony and satire is expertly woven throughout the narrative. This not only provides countless moments of laughter but also serves to enhance the overall entertainment value of the story.

Carl Hiaasen's ability to create such vivid and memorable characters, along with his deft use of literary devices, makes his work a true delight to read.

My favorite Hiaasen book is truly a remarkable piece of literature.

From the very first page, it had me completely engaged and entertained. There are certain parts within its pages that made me laugh hysterically the first time I read it, and astonishingly, they have the exact same effect on me even today.

The author's unique writing style and sense of humor are what make this book stand out. His ability to create vivid characters and absurd situations is simply genius.

Each time I pick up this book, I know I'm in for a wild ride filled with laughter and excitement. It's a book that I can read over and over again and never get tired of.

It has become a beloved part of my collection and I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a good laugh and an enjoyable read.

By far, I firmly believe that this is the best among the "Skink" books up to this point.

It encompasses a little bit of everything. There are great characters, each with their own unique charm and personality. The story is filled with suspense that keeps you on the edge of your seat, and the plot twists and turns in the most unexpected ways.

We have the bad guys and gals who add an element of danger and excitement, and the good guys and gals who are just regular folks, making them relatable. To top it all off, there is a hurricane and the associated carnage that comes with it. Death, destruction, murder, and mayhem - it's a recipe for a thrilling read.

Skink continues to evolve as a character, along with his friend Jim Tile, who are the two recurring characters in this series. I have yet to pick up a Hiaasen book that wasn't a compelling read, and this one is no exception. It's a must-read for fans of mystery, thriller, and adventure.

Stormy Weather (Skink #3) by Carl Hiaasen (Alfred A. Knopf 1995) (Fiction – Thriller)

This is the latest “romp in the swamp” by the irrepressible South Floridian author Carl Hiassen. It marks the third appearance of former Florida Governor Clinton Tyree, better known as “Skink.”

In this installment, a powerful hurricane has wreaked havoc on South Florida. The citizens in the lower third of the state are now in survival and rebuilding mode. Meanwhile, various scam artists, known as “construction subcontractors,” are flocking to South Florida. They are eager to find a place at the trough and take advantage of the flood of insurance settlements and government handouts that seem to be available everywhere in the hurricane zone.

Adding to the chaos, State Trooper Jim Tile's girlfriend has been assaulted, beaten, and robbed. Fortunately, Officer Tile knows a certain party who can surely help set things right: Skink.

My rating: 7/10. I finished reading this book on 1/23/17.

Stormy weather indeed

Hi assent is truly a master when it comes to creating characters, and this book is no exception. The character of Skink is a fascinating one. Is he crazy? Most likely, but that's what makes him so captivating. He is filled with unexpected behavior and thoughts that keep the reader on the edge of their seat. The adventures of the eventual merry band are both thrilling and entertaining, making it impossible to put the book down. The story takes place in the aftermath of a hurricane, adding an element of chaos and destruction to the already exciting plot. The hijinx that ensue are both hilarious and heartwarming, and the reader can't help but root for the characters as they navigate through their adventures. Overall, this book is a must-read for anyone who loves a good adventure story.

Okay.

I have now discovered the reason why I have a passion for some of Hiaasen’s books and a strong aversion to others.

I am deeply in love with those books that are filled with a diverse menagerie of characters. Each character brings their own unique charm, personality, and story, which enriches the overall narrative and makes it come alive.

On the other hand, the books that focus solely on one main character often seem to lack depth and excitement. They can feel one-dimensional and fail to engage me on a deeper level.

Thankfully, this particular book was an absolute favorite of mine! It had all the elements that I look for in a great read - a rich and engaging plot, a cast of colorful characters, and a writing style that kept me hooked from start to finish.

I highly recommend it to anyone who is looking for a fun and entertaining read.

Funny. Since I had read other Hiaasen books, I knew precisely what to expect and had an intense desire to read them all. Every person holds a distinct opinion about anything and everything. Some people's opinions truly'suck', while others are absolutely spot on according to our feelings at that particular moment. We all perceive things differently, and sometimes we even interpret the exact same thing in completely different ways. Moreover, we also have the ability to change our opinions from one day to the next. I have often picked up books and started reading, only to find that I could never finish them. Some authors have undergone changes over the years, and their latest offerings have unfortunately become boring or unreadable. However, sometimes I have a penchant for reading fun books. In such cases, I will毫不犹豫地 pick up a Hiaasen, Dave Barry, or Jimmy Buffett book to have a good laugh and lighten my mood.
