Stormy Weather (Skink #3) by Carl Hiaasen (Alfred A. Knopf 1995) (Fiction – Thriller)
This is the latest “romp in the swamp” by the irrepressible South Floridian author Carl Hiassen. It marks the third appearance of former Florida Governor Clinton Tyree, better known as “Skink.”
In this installment, a powerful hurricane has wreaked havoc on South Florida. The citizens in the lower third of the state are now in survival and rebuilding mode. Meanwhile, various scam artists, known as “construction subcontractors,” are flocking to South Florida. They are eager to find a place at the trough and take advantage of the flood of insurance settlements and government handouts that seem to be available everywhere in the hurricane zone.
Adding to the chaos, State Trooper Jim Tile's girlfriend has been assaulted, beaten, and robbed. Fortunately, Officer Tile knows a certain party who can surely help set things right: Skink.
My rating: 7/10. I finished reading this book on 1/23/17.
Usual mad-cap antics that I've come to expect from Hiaasen. His works always feature a queer and quirky bunch of eccentric characters. It's like stepping into a world where the ordinary becomes extraordinary. The storylines are filled with unexpected twists and turns that keep you on the edge of your seat. Each character has their own unique charm and personality, making them truly unforgettable. Whether it's the zany protagonist or the wacky supporting cast, they all contribute to the overall good fun of the narrative. Hiaasen has a knack for creating a vivid and engaging world that you can't help but get lost in. It's a joy to read his books and experience the madness and mayhem that unfolds within the pages. If you're looking for a lighthearted and entertaining read, then Hiaasen's works are definitely worth checking out.
Funny. Since I had read other Hiaasen books, I knew precisely what to expect and had an intense desire to read them all. Every person holds a distinct opinion about anything and everything. Some people's opinions truly'suck', while others are absolutely spot on according to our feelings at that particular moment. We all perceive things differently, and sometimes we even interpret the exact same thing in completely different ways. Moreover, we also have the ability to change our opinions from one day to the next. I have often picked up books and started reading, only to find that I could never finish them. Some authors have undergone changes over the years, and their latest offerings have unfortunately become boring or unreadable. However, sometimes I have a penchant for reading fun books. In such cases, I will毫不犹豫地 pick up a Hiaasen, Dave Barry, or Jimmy Buffett book to have a good laugh and lighten my mood.
