Is it just me, or is this book really lacking an ending? I get cliffhangers and open endings, but this one just stops without resolving anything at all. The Giver has an extremely open ending, yet the main conflicts were resolved and actions were taken. In this case, I have no clue how anything gets fixed or changed. There's no confrontation with Jamison, no confrontation with Vandana, no mention of Annabella's/Katrina's/Thomas's & Jo's parents' deaths, nothing about the treatment of the special children (Thomas, Kira, and Jo), nothing about how Kira might bring about changes in the village, and nothing about the current Singer. It's as if The Giver ended right after Jonas witnessed his father euthanizing the newborn. It lists all the problems neatly, but there's no next step. If this were a community like that in The Giver, it would be okay. It's easy to imagine changes for that place since it's so orderly, peaceful, and the people are so passive. But this is a community of violence, oppression, and cruelty. Kira discovers some deep, dark secrets and decides to make things better, but leaving it at that just doesn't work for me. It's too unbelievable, considering the lack of respect she gets from almost everyone except Thomas and Matt. Why would people who leave their neighbors and children to die in the Field, want to leave her there to die too, and have a history of killing anyone who gets in their way, listen to what she has to say or even care? That's something I just can't figure out. It feels like lazy writing, which isn't what I expect from Lowry's books. Maybe there's some deeper meaning or hints that I missed, but I just didn't see it.
