I hate reading long poems more than I can express to you.

The form is appealing, with those lovely rhymes that seem to guide me along. They do help me in a way, pushing me through the lines.

However, I think the main issue here is that I know next to nothing about the story or the biblical original. As a result, I'm completely lost. I do have a bit of knowledge about the exclusion crisis, which is slightly helpful, but still, I'm not having an easy time reading this poem.

Maybe I'll amend this review next week when we actually study it. But let's be honest, spoilers, I probably won't.

I must disclaim that I'm aware this is one of those texts that is objectively good. But for some reason, I just can't seem to appreciate it properly. It's like there's a barrier between me and the true essence of the poem.

I found this rather hard to follow.

It seemed that the content was a bit complex and required a certain level of background knowledge.

I think it would have been a bit easier if I'd read it instead of listening to it.

When reading, one can pause and reflect, and refer to relevant materials if needed.

I think part of the problem was my not knowing that period of history very well - both the time of David and the time of Charles I.

These historical periods are rich in events and figures, and without a good understanding, it is difficult to fully grasp the meaning.

However, a biography of Charles I is waiting for me, so perhaps that will illumine this.

I hope that by reading the biography, I can gain a deeper understanding of that historical period and be able to better follow the content.

Overall, this experience has made me realize the importance of having a good knowledge of history when dealing with related topics.
