WOW.

A perfect mystery is set in Spain just after their Civil War has ended and Franco's regime is engaged in cleaning up the country of the Republicans, also known as the Communists.

After having read a bit about the brutality of that war, this book feels extremely true.

The story is masterfully crafted, seamlessly mixing a real murder mystery with the harsh realities of the general devastation that prevailed.

There is fear lurking around every corner, hunger gnawing at people's bellies, resistance simmering beneath the surface, and the black market thriving.

It is impossible to recommend this book highly enough.

It offers a captivating and immersive look into a tumultuous period of history while keeping the reader on the edge of their seat with its thrilling mystery.

Whether you are a history buff or a lover of mystery novels, this book is sure to satisfy.

Don't miss out on this amazing read.

The Spanish Civil War had a profound and far-reaching aftermath.

After the war, Spain faced a long period of political, social, and economic reconstruction. The country was divided, with deep ideological and political differences remaining.

The victorious Nationalist forces established a dictatorship under General Francisco Franco, which lasted for nearly four decades.

During this time, political freedoms were restricted, and there was widespread repression of opposition groups.

The economy also suffered, with high levels of unemployment and poverty.

However, in the years following Franco's death in 1975, Spain began to transition to a democratic system.

This process was not without challenges, but it led to significant political and social changes.

Today, Spain is a modern, democratic country, but the memory of the civil war still lingers, serving as a reminder of the country's complex and often troubled past.

This mystery is set immediately after the conclusion of the fighting in the Spanish Civil War.

The mystery itself is of reasonable interest and progresses steadily. However, I derived great enjoyment from this novel mainly because it imparted to me some knowledge about that war.

Prior to reading it, I knew very little (merely that Franco seized power, Hemingway was involved, and the Germans regarded it as a "trial run" for WWII).

Since the main suspect and the detective were on opposing sides in the recent conflict, their relationship offers some profound insights into the horror of that war.

It allows the reader to understand the complex emotions and experiences of those who were directly affected by the war.

The story not only engages the reader with its mystery but also educates them about an important historical event.

Overall, it is a captivating novel that combines entertainment with historical significance.
