People are the products of the conditions in which they are placed. If those conditions change, the person also changes. To the extent that he may even be surprised himself.

The story of this book is also more or less about this very incident. A simple teacher who is in love with a girl named Pauline. But when he wins a huge amount in gambling, he completely forgets his love for Pauline and easily goes to Paris with a random woman. A journey that of course did not lead to a feeling of happiness. But the problem is that when the conditions change, people also change.

As long as Alexei is poor, his love story with Pauline is in the form of a constant and consuming desire on the part of Alexei towards Pauline, who always puts her power in the background and steps forward. But when Alexei suddenly becomes a semi-millionaire and takes money for Pauline, the power position between Alexei and Pauline changes. Now the man is in a position of power and Pauline is in a position of weakness. And this is what makes Pauline so excited.

Pauline, who for a long time, because of the debt her father has to Douglin, has been forced to live with him under the shadow of his power, with her position of weakness in front of Alexei, the only one who can satisfy her pride of independence in front of him, of course, becomes crazy and finally, out of the pride she has, tries to experience the pleasure of power for the last time in front of Alexei and for this reason throws the money in his face and leaves the room. Although we know that in her heart she loves Alexei.

Pauline's actions towards Alexei should be interpreted more from the perspective of the humiliation that has been imposed on this woman and in this regard, it reminded me a lot of "Nastasya Filippovna" in the novel "The Idiot".

In general, I want to say that the story did not have a very tight and calculated plot, but as always, Dostoyevsky's characterization makes the person famous himself. In addition, several scenes that are written about the grandmother and Alexei's gambling really give a vivid experience of gambling to the person and show the pleasure of winning and the pain of losing well. This is what I thought the book was good, although it could have been really much better.

P.S. I listened to its voice with the voice of Arman Sultanzadeh. It was really a vivid experience.

Well... this is a story that I didn't like.

I didn't like its characters or its general atmosphere.

If "The Gambler" is one of his best stories,

it reveals his own vice and his sufferings with gambling.

This disease that afflicted him for a not short period of time...

Does this mean that I don't like Dostoyevsky??

I'm actually amazed... I thought it would be a unique experience.

Because the man wrote about himself in it.

And he is no ordinary man.

But Fyodor Dostoyevsky,

one of the greatest writers in history.

I thought I would read one of the most beautiful stories.

But it passed by me without affecting me in the slightest.

"The Gambler" is not a weak story.

Everything Dostoyevsky writes is pure gold.

But it didn't appeal to me despite that.

Despite the fact that, as is his habit, he delves into the human soul as no one else can.

But he just couldn't make me engage with it... at all.
