I absolutely loved each and every one of these stories. Among them, "The Gambler", "Notes from Underground" (though I have a particular preference for the Michael Katz translation), "A Disgraceful Affair", "A Gentle Creature", and "The Dream of a Ridiculous Man" stand out.

Volumes upon volumes could be written about each of these works. I'm certain that many have already delved deep into their analysis.

To showcase the piercing quality of Dostoevsky's philosophical exploration, I'll just cite a quote.

"Why, we don't even know where this 'real life' lives nowadays, what it really is, and what it's called. Leave us alone without books and we'll get confused and lose our way at once--we won't know what to join, what to hold on to, what to love or what to hate, what to respect or what to despise. We're even oppressed by being men--men with real bodies and blood of OUR VERY OWN. We're ashamed of it; we consider it a disgrace and we strive to become some kind of impossible 'general-human-beings.' We're stillborn; for some time now we haven't been conceived by living fathers; we like it more and more. We're developing a taste for it. Soon we'll conceive of a way to be born from ideas..."

This is from the underground man in "Notes from Underground".

In our modern era, we could easily substitute "entertainment" for "books" in this passage. It truly makes us reflect on the state of our society and our relationship with the world around us. Dostoevsky's works continue to be relevant and thought-provoking, challenging us to examine our own beliefs and values.

Dostoevsky's works, such as White Nights and Notes from Underground, are truly remarkable. The writing in these novels is of an extremely high quality. The themes explored within them are not only universal but also offer an in-depth look at the complex psychology of the characters. This makes them highly relevant and applicable to modern people and the various situations they encounter in their lives. Dostoevsky has a unique way of narrating that is both comforting and engaging. His ability to bring the characters to life and make the readers empathize with them is truly a gift. I find myself completely immersed in his work and enjoy it immensely. It is a pleasure to explore the worlds he creates and gain a deeper understanding of the human condition through his words.

This is an outstanding compilation.

It is truly remarkable as it encompasses a vast number of his "great short works".

It includes masterpieces such as "The Double", "White Nights", "A Disgraceful Affair" (also known as "A Nasty Story"), "Notes From The Underground", "The Gambler", "The Eternal Husband", "A Gentle Creature", and "The Dream of a Ridiculous Man".

I had already perused four of these captivating stories, which is why I decided to pick up this compilation for the remaining four that I hadn't yet had the pleasure of reading.

Dostoevsky's short stories and novellas are widely regarded as some of his finest work.

This compilation serves as an excellent starting point for those who are completely unfamiliar with Dostoevsky's literary genius.

Approximately half of the stories within this collection are filled with amusement and lightheartedness, while the other half delve into more serious and profound themes.

As I had anticipated, every single story in this collection was highly satisfying and brimming with profound psychological meaning.

It offers readers a captivating journey into the complex and fascinating world of Dostoevsky's imagination.
