The third book in the series is my favorite so far.

It offers a wealth of clear information, which is truly beneficial. However, the real essence lies between the lines. The models for perception and reality that are presented add a layer of depth and complexity to the story.

Overall, it is a highly rewarding read. The author has managed to create a captivating narrative that not only provides valuable insights but also engages the reader on a deeper level.

The details and subtleties in the book make it a truly remarkable piece of work. I would highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys thought-provoking literature.

Whether you are a fan of the series or new to it, this third book is sure to leave a lasting impression.

I found this book to be extremely interesting as it offers a whole sensory experience of the millennia-old cosmogony of the Mesoamerican indigenous cultures.

The understanding of the Tonal and the Nagual are metaphysical concepts that are difficult to comprehend and yet they determine a significant part of the theme of this book.

Undoubtedly, it is a complex literary work that is tremendously illustrative of an ancestral knowledge with which I felt a great connection and affinity.

Many of its quotes that I highlighted during my reading appealed to me. Overall, the book is full of great wisdom and it invites me to a subsequent philosophical reflection regarding understanding what the path of the warrior is.

This exploration of the Mesoamerican cosmogony not only enriches our knowledge of different cultures but also makes us think about our own place in the world and the paths we choose to follow.

The author's ability to present these complex ideas in an engaging and accessible way is truly remarkable.

It is a book that I would highly recommend to anyone interested in history, philosophy, or simply in expanding their understanding of the human experience.

I read Castaneda's first three books - 'The Teachings of Don Juan: A Yaqui Way of Knowledge', 'A Separate Reality: Further Conversations with Don Juan', and 'Journey to Ixtlan: The Lessons of Don Juan' - one after another during my summer break from Grinnell College. Among the three, I have a particular fondness for 'The Teachings of Don Juan', which is his reworked doctoral dissertation.

In the years that followed, I managed to obtain a copy of 'Tales of Power', the fourth book in the series. I also came across an article in the 'NY Times' that suggested all four books were hoaxes and that Castaneda's doctorate had been revoked due to the discovery of fraud. This was a great disappointment, similar to the day when 'The Chronicle of Higher Education' revealed Martin Luther King's plagiarism in his dissertation.

Nevertheless, just as King's youthful academic dishonesty does not diminish his later political work, Castaneda's actions do not undermine a certain authenticity in his work, despite its fictional nature. Since that initial 'Times' article, I have not followed the controversy, so I have no opinion about Don Juan or the basis of Castaneda's actual fieldwork, if any. However, I do recognize that he had at least some substantial experiences with altered states of consciousness, which one would assume were drug-induced. The popularity of his initial trilogy during the sixties was likely due, in no small part, to the fact that many people recognized some of their own experiences and insights in his work.

In any case, since I already had the fourth book and recognized this "certain authenticity", I went ahead and read it. Sadly, it didn't have the same effect on me. Perhaps I knew too much to be charmed again. Moreover, it seemed rather redundant.

The fourth book in Castaneda's tales of Don Juan is a remarkable fusion of philosophy and narrative. It draws inspiration from Native American mysticism and weaves in undertones of eastern philosophy, making it a timeless work.

Unlike the first three books, the plot here unfolds in a connected sequence, with early odd concepts being revisited and fully developed later. Ideas like Qi, Dantien, Linga Sharira, Wu Wei, and Bhumi-sparsha are introduced and layered until they are integrated into the main character. Castaneda's struggle against his own flaws is heartwarming, humorous, and inspiring. The evolution of the protagonist and Castaneda's writing style and story structuring are equally incredible.

In the years after publication, American culture may have criticized Castaneda's stories as hoaxes, but this shows a lack of understanding of mythology. Taoism and Buddhism have many myths, yet their practitioners don't view them as literal. Joseph Campbell was concerned about the American view of "myth" as falsehood. The debate continues about whether the Don Juan stories are real or just stories, but one can still recognize the wonderful myth and let it have an effect. Modern man should not dismiss mythology or de-classify certain stories as myth just because they seem strange.

It truly blows my mind that The Matrix has an astonishing number of parallels with the series of events that unfold in this book. It's simply remarkable. Without a doubt, Don Juan can be equated to Morpheus. The way they both seem to possess an otherworldly quality is truly captivating. The scenes of jumping and gliding through the air are not only unreal but also utterly wonderful. It's as if we are being transported into a realm where the impossible becomes possible. The comparison between the two is fascinating and makes one wonder about the deeper meanings and connections that lie beneath the surface. It's a thought-provoking exploration that leaves us in awe of the creativity and imagination that went into both The Matrix and this book.

He patted me vigorously on the back and laughed heartily.

"Wish him well, Carlitos," he said with a kind smile.

"Wish him well."

I was extremely tired at that moment.

A strange mix of happy sadness surged within me.

I told him that I originated from a place where people seldom, if ever, wished one another well.

"I know," he replied understandingly.

"The same thing occurred to me.

But now I'm a warrior, and I have the courage and the capacity to wish him well."

His words made me think deeply.

In this often harsh world, the act of wishing someone well might seem like a small thing.

Yet, it holds great power and significance.

It can bring warmth and hope to those around us.

Maybe, like him, I should also learn to be more generous with my well-wishes.

After all, in the end, we are all in this journey of life together.

And a little kindness can go a long way.

I skipped ahead to the last book and then made a decision to backtrack and read this one before I completed the final book. However, I have the impression that this book is rather similar to the first one. I'm awarding it two stars. I suppose I'm still of the opinion that Don Juan keeps leaving breadcrumbs and there are so many books in the series. It's a rather frustrating manner to convey wisdom through the narrative. Don Juan's obtuse descriptions and guidance remain as mysterious as they have always been.

My favorite aspect mentioned in the book pertains to dreams. Don Juan states that in order to have a lucid dream, one must focus on seeing the top of one's hand. It's like pulling one's attention while in a dream towards the top of the hand. This idea really intrigued me and made me think about the power of our minds and the possibilities within the dream world. I wonder if following this advice would actually lead to having lucid dreams. It's definitely something worth exploring further.

Finally wrapped up one of the most moving parts of the series (so far). If I could write all it meant to me - would that defeat the purpose? This moment is truly special. It's like a culmination of emotions and experiences that have been building up throughout the series. The story has taken us on a journey, filled with heartaches and joys, and this particular part has touched me deeply.

As I reflect on it, I realize that there are so many aspects that make it so moving. The characters' development, the intricate plot, and the beautiful writing all contribute to this powerful moment. It's as if the author has managed to capture a piece of my soul and put it on paper.

But perhaps the most important thing is that this moment has made me feel something. It has made me laugh, cry, and think. It has made me appreciate the power of storytelling and the impact it can have on our lives. And for that, I am truly grateful.
