The first Reginald Hill book I've read,

despite always enjoying the Dalziel and Pascoe adaptations on TV. I read this in two installments four weeks apart,

thanks to accidentally leaving the book behind. However,

I found the characters had been so well developed that I was able to carry on as though I'd only put it down the day before. Hill truly makes you feel as if you are living and breathing right next to these characters.

As the story of love and loss unfolds,

set against the backdrop of WW2 and the Final Solution,

it has an enormous impact on the lives of our protagonists in Paris. The theme of loyalty runs throughout this novel,

with loyalty to spouse, children, family, friends, and country all being closely examined under the microscope. It is a truly bloody good read,

one that keeps you engaged from beginning to end and makes you think about the complex nature of human relationships and the choices we make in times of crisis.

The topic of the German occupation of Paris did not hold much appeal for me initially. However, I am truly glad that my deep admiration for Reginald Hill compelled me to pick up and read this book.

As I delved into its pages, it provided me with the opportunity to soak up some valuable historical background. But more significantly, it offered a profound insight into the complex ways in which events and circumstances can have a profound impact on individuals and their relationships.

The book is a fascinating blend of darkness and light. There are moments that are truly heart-wrenching, while others bring a glimmer of hope and warmth. I was quite surprised by how moved I became while reading it.

It made me realize that even in the most difficult of times, human nature can still shine through, and that the power of relationships can endure and even be strengthened in the face of adversity. Overall, it was a thought-provoking and engaging read that I would highly recommend.

Although it may seem brief at first glance, upon closer inspection, one can discover that it holds some value.

The limited words used in this article are carefully chosen to get the main points across.

It sure isn’t a Dalziel and Pascoe.

This particular work has its moments, to be fair. There are certain aspects that manage to capture one's attention and hold it for a while. However, when it comes to my personal preference, I much prefer his police procedurals.

The way he crafts those stories, with their detailed investigations, complex characters, and intricate plotlines, is truly captivating. In the police procedurals, you get a sense of the real work that goes into solving crimes, the challenges faced by the detectives, and the excitement of the hunt.

While this other work may have some redeeming qualities, it just doesn't measure up to the excellence of his police procedurals in my eyes.

This is a really good story that not only entertains but also provides a wealth of knowledge about the German occupation of France.

It offers a fascinating glimpse into that historical period, allowing readers to understand the challenges and hardships faced by the people.

Additionally, the story highlights how judgmental and hypocritical people can be. We often see characters in the story making snap judgments about others without really knowing the full truth.

This serves as a reminder that we should always be careful before passing judgment and try to see things from different perspectives.

Overall, it's a great read that combines an engaging narrative with important historical and moral lessons.

The Collaborators is a captivating novel set in German-occupied Paris during World War II.

It delves into the diverse reactions of the French people towards the occupation through the eyes of the main character, Janine, and her close associates. Ranging from militant resistance to collaboration, the story unfolds with interesting plot twists and well-cast characters. The realism of the characters' reactions adds depth to the narrative.

***SPOILER***

What makes this book truly remarkable is its understated approach. Unlike many WWII books that rely on overly emotional language or events to tug at the heartstrings, The Collaborators is more powerful in its simplicity. One of the most poignant scenes is when little Pauli runs into the house as the Germans arrive. He stuffs food into his mouth and pockets, continuing to eat even as his aunt is taken away, his cousin betrays him as a Jew, and the Germans question him. His calmness is both unnerving and heart-wrenching, especially considering he knows the hardships that await him. The idea that a child should have such knowledge is truly horrific.

Towards the end of the book, as the French begin to hunt for collaborators, one of the themes is clearly stated: "This world.. was not too different from the world it replaced. Oppression and blood, revenge and hate; the basic materials were much the same." However, the book is also about love in various forms - the unconditional love of a mother for her children, the deep bond between lifelong friends, the unwavering love of a woman for her husband, the strength of a grandmother for her grandchildren and then for others, love for one's country, and love for one's comrades. For Janine, there is a contrast between a husband whose hate for the enemy overshadows his love for his family and an enemy who is willing to sacrifice his freedom and perhaps his life for love.

Overall, The Collaborators is a thought-provoking and moving novel that offers a unique perspective on a dark period in history.

I had REALLY relished my very first Reginal Hill book, namely "the woodcutter". As a result, I was extremely eager to embark on reading the first installment in his Dalziel and Pascoe series.

Regrettably, I discovered that it was rather slow-paced and didn't strike me as being particularly special. Nevertheless, this particular book managed to rejuvenate my faith in him.

Admittedly, it is a bit on the long side and perhaps a touch slower than it potentially could have been. But, I have a genuine affection for this style of writing. The resolutions, thus far, have invariably left me with a smile gracing my face.

Undoubtedly, it kept me with an insatiable desire to pick it up once more, which, to my mind, is the definitive mark of a truly excellent book.

It's as if the author has a unique charm that draws me in, despite the minor flaws. I look forward to delving further into his works and seeing what other literary treats he has in store for me.

Overall, this book has reignited my passion for Reginal Hill's writing, and I can't wait to explore more of his literary world.

There was a particular point in this book where I seriously considered giving up. The emotions and the situations described felt simply unbearable, almost too painful to endure.

However, upon reflection, I realized that it was indeed a good story. It had the power to draw me in and make me feel deeply. And so, I am truly glad that I persevered and carried on with it.

Almost inevitably, as I was reading, I found myself asking what I would do in the various characters' situations. This was an uncomfortable exercise, as it forced me to confront my own beliefs, values, and limitations. But then, isn't that what the best fiction often does? It challenges us, makes us think, and forces us to step outside of our comfort zones.

In the end, I am grateful for having read this book, despite the moments of discomfort. It has taught me a great deal about myself and about the human condition.

By the author of Dalziel and Pascoe, this story is set in wartime Paris, specifically during World War Two.

However, it is not primarily about the fighting but rather about the people. Janine, the main character, is on trial for collaborating with the 'Boche', which includes the death of her own husband, a Resistance fighter.

Her Jewish husband, her German Army contact, her middle-class parents, and her Black Market cousin all exert pressure on Janine. But her focus remains straightforward - her two young children.

These children are under constant threat from the Gestapo and others because of their Jewish father. Janine could not save her mother-in-law from the concentration camps, but she is desperate to save her children.

Given the circumstances, this is not a happy book. However, it provides an insight into the war from the perspective of ordinary Parisian families.

It is worth reading even for those who do not typically enjoy war stories, as it offers a unique and poignant look at the human experience during this tumultuous time.
