I have always had a deep affection for Hawaii. So, when I retrieved the book about Mexico from the shelf, I was filled with hope and anticipation. However, to my disappointment, it didn't quite meet my expectations.

Binational Norman Clay makes a visit to his old hometown. His purpose is to report on the bull fights that take place there. In the process, he delves into the various aspects of his ancestry. He reprises the Indian, Spanish, and Virginia Confederate parts of his heritage and details how they all came together in a high plateau Mexican town that is home to a silver mine.

The book also provides an in-depth look at the numerous bull fights and offers a behind-the-scenes perspective on the entire business. It seems that while the author's exploration of his ancestry and the local culture is somewhat interesting, the overall narrative fails to fully engage and captivate the reader. Perhaps a more detailed and engaging account of the bull fights and their significance within the community would have made for a more enjoyable read.

A great epic novel tells the story of a half American and half Mexican man who settles back in Mexico through his love of bullfighting. He reminisces about his ancestors, covering the history of Mexico via one family. The descriptions of the Aztecs, Conquistadors, pyramid building, civil war, and conflict with America are truly remarkable. It also delves into intricate details about bullfighting, with great accounts of various bullfights that make you feel as if you are in the arena. Additionally, it provides good information on the differences between Spanish and Mexican bullfighting, as well as how bulls are reared and trained. However, there is a slight criticism that perhaps he talks about too many bullfights and matadors. Overall, it is a very enjoyable book that offers a rich and engaging exploration of Mexican culture, history, and the world of bullfighting.

This is not my favorite work by Michener.

In my humble opinion, there is an excessive amount of detail regarding bullfighting and matadors.

However, I did find the historical characters to be quite enjoyable.

The story seems to focus a great deal on the world of bullfighting, which may not be to everyone's taste.

While the details are perhaps meant to add authenticity and depth, they can sometimes feel overwhelming.

Nevertheless, the portrayal of the historical figures is well done and adds an interesting dimension to the narrative.

It makes one wonder about the real people who lived during that time and how their actions and decisions shaped the events that followed.

Overall, although the excessive detail on bullfighting detracts from the overall experience for me, the historical characters do manage to hold my attention and make the book somewhat worthwhile.
