Oooooooffff,

After having read almost all of Chomsky's political works, I thought I'd give his linguist work a try.

However, it is definitely not for me.

Chomsky's political writings have always been captivating and thought-provoking. They offer unique perspectives on various social and political issues.

But when it comes to his linguist work, it seems to be a whole different ballgame.

The concepts and theories presented are highly technical and complex, making it difficult for me to fully understand and engage with.

Perhaps it requires a more in-depth knowledge of linguistics and related fields to truly appreciate and benefit from his work in this area.

Nevertheless, I respect Chomsky's contributions to both political and linguist studies.

And although his linguist work may not be my cup of tea, I will continue to explore and learn from his other writings.

A book is divided into two parts, both of which "take place" in the 70s.

The first part, which is significantly better than the second, is essentially a transcript of interviews given by Chomsky. Throughout these interviews, several interesting ideas surface. Even after almost half a century, these ideas continue to be thought-provoking. They offer valuable insights into various aspects of language and linguistics.

The second part of the book, on the other hand, is extremely boring. Chomsky seems to have a lot to say about a wide range of things, but the presentation lacks the engaging quality of the first part.

The search for a universal grammar, which aims to bind all languages to sets of shared rules codified through pseudo-mathematical formalism, appears to be the central theme of the book. This is a noble and ambitious goal. It is likely that this pursuit was/is behind the development of many online translators that are still available today. However, in the face of the relentless dominance and stunning performance of large language models, this traditional approach to understanding language may need to be reevaluated.

I simply can't rate this book.

There was just so much in it that was completely beyond my comprehension.

It didn't make matters any better that I chose to listen to the audiobook version.

The reader, at times, had a very mechanical tone, which made it even more difficult for me to engage with the content.

I found myself constantly struggling to keep up and understand what was being said.

The complex ideas and concepts presented in the book seemed to go right over my head.

Despite my best efforts, I just couldn't seem to get a handle on it.

Perhaps if I had read the physical book instead or had more prior knowledge on the subject matter, I might have had a different experience.

But as it stands, I'm left feeling rather disappointed and unable to give this book a proper rating.
