Trouble, trouble!

It seems that trouble always has a way of finding us when we least expect it. Whether it's a small inconvenience or a major crisis, trouble can disrupt our lives and cause stress and anxiety.

We may try to avoid trouble by being careful and making smart decisions, but sometimes it just can't be helped. It could come in the form of a flat tire on the way to work, a difficult project at school, or a conflict with a friend or family member.

When trouble strikes, it's important to stay calm and try to find a solution. Panicking will only make the situation worse. We can assess the problem, gather information, and come up with a plan of action. It may not be easy, but with determination and perseverance, we can overcome the trouble and move forward.

Remember, trouble is a part of life, but it doesn't have to define us. We have the strength and ability to handle whatever comes our way.

Similar to the "Skeptics Guide to the Universe", this work is filled with numerous complicated ideas and thought-provoking stories. The author skillfully illustrates the significance of maintaining a clear mind and not allowing unruly propaganda to easily sway one's opinion. While it may not be the most captivating book in terms of pure entertainment, the ideas and lessons that it emanates are of utmost importance for anyone striving to thrive in our society today. In a world inundated with information and misinformation, being able to think critically and independently is essential. This book serves as a valuable reminder of that fact. It encourages readers to question, analyze, and evaluate the various claims and ideas that they encounter, rather than simply accepting them at face value. By doing so, we can make more informed decisions and avoid being misled by false or inaccurate information.

Chomsky is always thought provoking.

However, this book seemed somewhat disjointed. The interviewer introduced a variety of topics for Mr. Chomsky to discuss.

I also found it somewhat off-putting hearing Mr. Chomsky's tendency to introduce many of his comments with phrases like \\"... well it's obvious\\", or \\"... anyone who's ever thought about this would know...\\", or \\"any thinking person would know...\\", etc.

Maybe that's all true for people on his level. But I admit to thinking I would have benefited from a little more of the \\"obvious\\" background information in support of his many opinions.

It would have been helpful to have a more in-depth exploration of the context and reasoning behind his statements. This would have made it easier for the average reader to fully understand and appreciate his ideas.

Despite these drawbacks, the book still contains many valuable insights and perspectives from one of the most influential thinkers of our time.

The world is truly a better place due to the existence of Noam Chomsky and his remarkable body of work. It is in this very spirit that Haymarket Books has shouldered the important task of publishing a new series of Chomsky books and also republishing and updating some of the existing ones for our great benefit. And "Propaganda and the Public Mind" is an excellent starting point within this collection.

Comprising of his interviews with David Barsamian (whom Chomsky affectionately refers to as his publicist), this book hits the perfect mark when it comes to Noam Chomsky's works. It is largely free from the dense writing and complex language that characterize his more formal books. Instead, it reads, as it rightfully should, like a natural conversation. Despite being titled "Propaganda and the Public Mind", this surprisingly slim volume covers a wide array of issues. As one can imagine, it delves into what the US' role was in various situations. The range is indeed extensive, as Barsamian and Chomsky touch upon topics such as the US' interest in regulating world trade agreements, the media's role in distracting and misleading the population, East Timor, the Seattle riots, and the democratic state in India. We even gain some fascinating insights into Chomsky's personal life and his grandson who is into sports.

Of course, there were numerous occasions when I felt a bit confused and the conversation seemed to soar right above my comprehension. But that serves as a wonderful excuse for me to reread his books. This book, just like all of Chomsky's works, truly deserves to be studied in-depth.

This is an extremely interesting piece of reading.

On a daily basis, we are bombarded with an overwhelming amount of propaganda. It is of great significance to arm ourselves against it by having a clear understanding of how it functions.

Propaganda comes in various forms and can influence our thoughts, beliefs, and behaviors without us even realizing it. By being aware of the techniques and strategies used in propaganda, we can make more informed decisions and avoid being easily swayed.

Understanding propaganda also helps us to be more critical consumers of information. We can question the motives behind the messages we receive and look for alternative viewpoints. This, in turn, can lead to a more well-rounded and informed perspective.

In conclusion, taking the time to understand how propaganda works is an essential skill in today's information-rich society. It allows us to protect ourselves from being manipulated and make more rational choices.

The discussions of political events from 20 years ago (1999–2000) were scattered in topic and somewhat in tone.

However, I still had the feeling that I was learning something. I was able to pick up on new threads to explore and discover aspects of known complexes.

It's quite interesting how even in such diverse discussions, there are nuggets of knowledge to be found.

But, hey, let's face it. I'm the kind of person who would probably read a book on Chomsky baking cookies and enjoy it.

There's just something about different perspectives and unique topics that always piques my interest.

Whether it's political events from the past or a fictional account of a famous intellectual baking, I'm always eager to learn and explore.

Who knows what else I might discover along the way?

In a series of meandering and rather fascinating interviews that span from the late 1990s to the early 2000s, Chomsky delves into a wide range of topics.

He discusses East Timor, Colombia, the so-called drug war as opposed to the tobacco-non-war, U.S.-sponsored violence in Central America, as well as India, Pakistan, the Middle East, the Vietnam War, the Balkans, and Iraq.

Nuclear proliferation, education, income and wealth inequality, and protests against globalization also come under his scrutiny. Additionally, he touches on linguistic theory.

According to Chomsky, everything is intertwined with propaganda and power. He argues that it is democratic societies that have a greater need for propaganda. This is because non-democratic societies already have the means to control people through their military, police, and authoritarian apparatuses.

[Ed. note: However, it is increasingly evident that those very apparatuses are being employed and relied upon in democratic societies as well. The use of Tasers and the public's largely unquestioning acceptance of them serve as a prime example.]

I just recalled that when I was young and full of radical ideas, I devoured a whole plethora of books written by Chomsky.

Now, however, I have become jaded, cynical, and disenchanted with the realm of politics.

Chomsky, depending on one's political inclination, could be regarded as either the greatest living intellectual or the greatest living crackpot.

Nonetheless, I firmly believe that at least on some occasions, he presents valid points to anyone who approaches his works with fairness and an open mind.

On other occasions, I myself find him to be downright annoying and lacking in relevance.

Love him or loathe him, he is undeniably one of the top-ten most cited authors of all time.

He stands shoulder to shoulder with the likes of Freud, Plato, and other intellectual giants.

His influence and the extent of his citations are a testament to the impact he has had on the world of ideas, regardless of one's personal stance towards his views.

Whether we agree or disagree with him, there is no denying that Chomsky has left an indelible mark on the intellectual landscape.

This would be 5 stars but there are hundreds of typos.

It's truly a pity because the content is great. Even when reading it in 2020, it still holds a certain charm and value.

The ideas and information presented within are quite interesting and engaging. However, the numerous spelling mistakes and errors in grammar really detract from the overall experience.

It makes it a bit difficult to fully appreciate the essence of the article.

If only these typos could be corrected, it would undoubtedly be a much better read and deserve a full 5-star rating.

As it stands now, it's a good article with a major flaw that needs to be addressed.
