I was pleasantly surprised by The Robber Bridegroom. To be honest, I have had varying degrees of hatred for all of Welty's short stories. So, I thought perhaps I would like her other novels. However, it turns out that was my high point.

Welty was indeed the queen of capturing the south, including all of its ugly bits. The problem is that her writing gives the impression that she was perfectly okay with, for example, the racism that existed. I simply can't get past that. Each of her stories or novels is filled with truly awful people. I think the only reason I liked The Robber Bridegroom was because it was more fantastical than her other work, and that's what surprised me.

But overall, her portrayal of the south and its less-than-desirable aspects, along with what seems to be an acceptance of certain vices, makes it difficult for me to fully embrace her work. I appreciate her talent for capturing the essence of the region, but the underlying messages and attitudes sometimes leave a bad taste in my mouth.

Eudora Welty's novels, just like her stories, are truly captivating. They offer a brilliant light that shines on the life in Mississippi during the early to mid-20th century.

I really enjoyed the first story in this book/collection. However, I got bogged down on the second one and have now decided to move on from it.

Despite that, the author has some truly stunning turns of phrase. For example, take the description of a girl on a train. I have a great love for train travel, and this description captures it so wonderfully:

"Thoughts went out of her head and the landscape filled it. In the Delta, most of the world seemed sky. The clouds were large--larger than horses or houses, larger than boats or churches or gins, larger than anything except the fields the Fairchilds planted. Her nose in the banana skin as in the cup of a lily, she watched the Delta. The land was perfectly flat and level but it shimmered like the wing of a lighted dragonfly. It seemed strummed, as though it were an instrument and something had touched it."

Has anyone else read her works? If so, I would really like to have a discussion with them sometime. I wonder if the author was attempting in her writing some of the things that were happening in the rest of the art world during that time. Because I felt a kind of Picasso-like distortion in her writing. It was quite weird.

You really have to be on your game when it comes to short stories because they are so dense. Maybe right now, in this stage of my life, it's not the best time for me to read the rest of her stories. But I do appreciate the unique style and the beautiful language she uses.
