Beautiful writing, yet there is a great deal of it. It is a difficult story to read, especially in the midst of Lucinda's cancer treatment. The story is about a young man in 1973 who is dying of cancer, as seen through the eyes of his younger teenage brother. The narrative bounces back and forth over twenty years, and it turns out to be more about the terrible hardship of being gay in the 70s and having to hide one's true self. It is charming and powerful, with great insight into small-town life in the Midwest as well. The author vividly描绘s the emotions and experiences of the characters, making the story both heart-wrenching and thought-provoking. The details of the small town add a sense of authenticity and atmosphere, transporting the reader back in time. Overall, it is a remarkable piece of literature that explores themes of love, loss, and identity in a profound and moving way.
It truly demanded every ounce of my energy to complete this book. It is a narrative recounted in the voice of a gay man,描绘着 his life journey. He harbored a dream of becoming a ballet dancer, yet everything seemingly came to a halt when his elder brother was diagnosed with cancer. His life continued to unfold, but unfortunately, it failed to ignite any excitement within me. I found myself rather let down by this particular story penned by Jane Hamilton. I had expected more from her, perhaps a more engaging and captivating plot that would have held my attention firmly until the very end. However, this story seemed to lack that certain spark that would have made it truly remarkable.
A Charming Tale of Self-Discovery
There is a truly charming tale that unfolds, one that delves into the profound journey of coming into an understanding of oneself. It is a story that goes beyond the surface-level expectations that other people impose upon us. In this narrative, the protagonist embarks on a path of self-exploration, facing various challenges and experiences along the way. As they navigate through life's twists and turns, they begin to realize that their true essence lies within, far deeper than what others may have envisioned for them. This discovery brings about a sense of liberation and a newfound confidence. The tale beautifully描绘s the process of self-discovery, highlighting the importance of looking within and uncovering one's true potential, regardless of the expectations of the outside world.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Even though at times, I could hardly stand the way the main character Walter behaved, the story still managed to draw me in. It was an intimate look at a small group of people, and the characters felt so real. I loved her writing, which is not always the case. I did like her book Disobedience, but was not a fan of Map of the World or The Book of Ruth. And I thought Laura Ryder's Masterpiece was absolutely ridiculous. Telling the story by jumping back and forth in time doesn't always work in a novel, but I think in this book it did. It added an element of mystery and kept me engaged from start to finish. The author did a great job of weaving together the different time periods and making it all make sense. Overall, I would highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a good character-driven story.
