Honestly, I am not a science-brained kind of person. Or history. Or geography. Or math. Or... Well, you get the idea. I struggle with all those intellectual subjects.
Anyway! With that in mind, the author has managed to make scientific topics, experimentation, and the history of anatomy and scientific discovery, incredibly easy for this dumb-dumb to understand. And what's more, she even makes it funny! Roach infuses her writing with a flirtatious tone that completely eliminates the textbook-y vibe from all the brainy stuff.
The book walks the fine line between being informative, engaging, and darkly delightful. There are great sections in this book that will truly make you think and examine your own opinions.
That said, there is also a part of this book about souls that I found rather silly and worthy of an eye-roll. The inclusion of souls in a book based on cadaver science seems kind of strange. Especially when it delves into things like the donor organ transferring "traits" of the "soul" it came from into the recipient. "I got a new heart and it made me a sex addict!" Come on! You had a brush with death and the psychological ramifications of that, combined with the knowledge that someone else's heart is in your body, have just messed you up. Stop cheating on your wife and get some therapy!
Anyway, I'm not typically a super squeamish person, except for that part in Hostel where he slashes the dude's ankles. Ugh! But the whole part about animal testing just made me want to scream. Head transplants on monkeys just to see what happens? I'm seriously considering burning this place to the ground!!! I have a huge, huge, HUGE, HUGE problem with animal testing. Anything that is alive and cannot consent should be left the hell alone.
Overall, this book was fun, educational, and eye-opening. There is so much to absorb from it. It even gave me some options to consider for what happens to me after I die... If I ever do! Muahahahahahahhsdgffg *cough, choking*... (But seriously, become an organ donor.)
