A well-written story revolves around a young tennis player named Rosie and her family and friends. In this novel, the extended family consists of non-related adults who share a deep love and unwavering support for each other. They have the freedom to drop by at any time, which, while it seems like a delightful way to live, can also be a bit irritating at times.

The protagonist, Rosie, is experiencing the typical angst of being a teenager. Lamott skillfully allows readers to see the viewpoints of both Rosie and her parents. Through Rosie's eyes, we witness her struggles, her dreams, and her confusion as she navigates the challenges of adolescence.

From the parents' perspective, we gain an understanding of their concerns, their hopes for their daughter, and the difficulties they face in trying to guide her through this tumultuous stage of life. The story is engaging and relatable, making it a truly enjoyable read.

I absolutely adore Anne Lamott. We happen to be the exact same age and both grew up in the SF Bay area. However, there is one significant difference - I hardly ever played tennis.

There are a couple of favorite lines in the book that really stand out. One was when Luther told Rosie, "You cheated but you are not a cheater." This simple yet profound statement makes you stop and think about the nature of mistakes and how we view ourselves and others.

I also love Rae (probably because that's my middle name). She said, "And to thrive on turnip juice - emotionally, it was all my parents had to offer. It's a little bitter perhaps, and dehydrating. But it tastes like love to me." These lines are so powerful and touching. They speak to the idea that love can come in many different forms, even if it's not always what we expect or desire.

Overall, I think Anne Lamott's writing is truly inspiring and thought-provoking. Her words have the ability to touch our hearts and make us see the world in a different way.

Loved this book!

It is a wonderful coming-of-age story that focuses on a 13-year-old tennis player and her tennis partner. Their journey in the world of tennis is filled with challenges and growth.

However, there is another significant background story. The young girl's mother is having issues as she has never properly grieved for her dead husband. This adds a layer of complexity and emotion to the narrative.

In the background, there is also a mysterious, apparently homeless, man who watches the little tennis player. At first, this might sound dark and a bit concerning. But as the story unfolds, it becomes clear that his presence has a different meaning altogether.

Despite the elements that might seem a bit somber at times, the overall tone of the book is really very sweet. It explores themes of love, loss, and the power of human connection in a beautiful and touching way.

It is a book that will stay with you long after you have turned the last page.

Anne Lamott is truly the queen of descriptive writing.

Her works have the remarkable ability to transport you back to the vivid and intense experiences of teenage years. You can almost feel the palpable fear that teenagers often face, the unbridled joy that comes with newfound freedoms and discoveries, and the sometimes chaotic turmoil that defines that stage of life.

Moreover, she also delves deep into the realm of motherhood, painting a detailed and emotional picture of the joys, challenges, and sacrifices that come with being a mother.

Her writing is so engaging and powerful that it makes you feel as if you are right there with her, experiencing every moment along with her. This is truly a great book that offers a profound and moving exploration of two of the most important phases of life.

It is a must-read for anyone who appreciates beautiful and evocative writing that can touch the heart and soul.
