The main thing I would say about this book is that I wouldn't recommend it to anyone.

That doesn't just mean I would specifically say "Don't read this" - but also literally, I can't think of anyone I'd say "Here, read this" to, and that's unusual for me.

With pretty much any book, I can usually think of one or two specific people who I think would like it, get something out of it, or have some sort of connection with it.

But this one...it's so..meh. It's so oddly written.

It's partially stream-of-consciousness, but the bad part. It's like the author just let their thoughts run wild without any real structure or coherence.

It's also partially about Real Life but in a very fake-feeling way. It doesn't feel genuine or relatable at all.

It feels almost like it should have been two separate books that the author decided to mush up into one, resulting in a jumbled mess.

The funniest thing is the reason I bought it in the first place. It was a "staff recommendation" book at my local bookstore.

Guess that tells me something about some of their staff... Maybe their taste in books doesn't quite align with mine.

I truly desired to have a greater affinity for this book than I actually did.

For some reason, I simply couldn't establish a connection with the characters.

Perhaps it was due to the significant disparity in their perspectives and ways of life compared to what I am accustomed to.

However, I am well aware that there have been numerous books where I could never envision myself as the character within the story, yet I still liked them.

Regarding Jennifer, I didn't really have a liking for her. I failed to comprehend her relationships with Megan and Kathleen.

I think Randy was the one I liked the most among the characters, and of course, Wallace as well.

But unfortunately, neither of them was sufficient for me to wholeheartedly recommend this book to anyone.

It's a pity because I had high hopes for this book initially, but in the end, it just didn't quite meet my expectations.

Maybe others will have a different experience and be able to form a stronger connection with the characters and the story.

But for me, it simply didn't click.

It was an interesting book, though strange.

The story had elements that were both captivating and a bit out of the ordinary.

I found myself constantly turning the pages, eager to see what would happen next.

Even though some of the concepts were a bit hard to wrap my head around, I still enjoyed the overall experience.

Now, I'm really interested to see what her non-fiction work is like.

I wonder if it will be as engaging and thought-provoking as this fictional piece.

Perhaps her non-fiction will offer a different perspective on the world, or maybe it will explore some of the same themes in a more factual way.

Either way, I'm looking forward to finding out and delving into her other works.

I have a feeling that they will be just as interesting and unique as this book.

Give me anything by Anne Lamott and I will read it.

Her writing has a unique charm that draws me in every time. Whether it's her memoirs, essays, or novels, Lamott has a way of expressing the most profound and relatable thoughts and emotions.

Her words are like a warm embrace, comforting and inspiring at the same time. I love how she is unafraid to be vulnerable and share her own experiences, both the good and the bad.

Reading her work makes me feel less alone in the world and gives me hope that I can also overcome the challenges in my own life.

Anne Lamott's writing is a gift, and I am always eager to receive it and explore the beautiful world she creates with her words.

I truly believe that anyone who reads her work will be touched and changed in some way.

This book truly became extremely tedious to read in the second half.

I managed to finish it, but it was quite different from what I had expected.

Certainly, it wasn't my favorite read.

The main character seemed a little too strange for my taste.

Her random sexual encounters, drug use, lack of motivation, and that rather odd relationship she had with a 10-year-old girl - all of these aspects were just a touch too weird for me.

It made it difficult for me to fully engage with the story and the character.

I found myself constantly questioning her actions and decisions.

Maybe if the character had been more relatable or the plot had been more straightforward, I would have had a different opinion.

However, as it stands, this book will not be one that I would recommend to others.

It's just not something that I would enjoy reading again.

Everything that I know deep within my soul, but unfortunately forget in the never-ending routine of day-to-day living, is vividly brought to life in this remarkable book.

The writing style is simply captivating, with words that flow like a gentle river, carrying the reader along on an unforgettable journey. The characters are so well-developed that they seem to step right off the pages and into the reader's heart. Each one has their own unique personality, flaws, and dreams, making them truly relatable.

The backdrop of the story is equally enchanting, creating a world that is both familiar and yet full of surprises. It sets the perfect stage for the characters to unfold their lives and for the reader to become fully immersed in their experiences.

Everything about this book speaks directly to my heart, touching on emotions and themes that I thought I had long forgotten. Lamott's novels are truly captivating, and one in particular holds a special place in my heart as my favorite. It has this unique charm that draws me in from the very first page. The story is so rich and engaging, filled with characters that feel incredibly real. As I read, it constantly reminds me of myself. I can see my own experiences, emotions, and struggles reflected in the pages. It's as if Lamott has a deep understanding of the human condition and has managed to capture it beautifully in this novel. The way she weaves the plot and develops the characters is simply masterful. It makes me think, it makes me feel, and it leaves a lasting impression. I find myself coming back to this novel again and again, eager to explore its depths and be reminded of the parts of myself that it uncovers.

I'm a truly huge fan of Anne Lamott. However, I really struggled through this particular work. But still, I'm more than willing to give it the benefit of the doubt. This is mainly because it's quite evident that it's one of her earlier books.

You know, when it comes to Anne Lamott's works, I actually have a distinct preference. I much prefer her personal essays over her fiction. Her personal essays have this unique charm and authenticity that really draw me in. They feel like she's sharing her most intimate thoughts and experiences directly with me. On the other hand, while her fiction has its own merits, it just doesn't have the same impact on me as her personal essays do. Maybe it's because in her personal essays, I can really get a sense of who she is as a person, and that connection makes all the difference.

Nevertheless, I'm still hopeful that as I continue to explore her body of work, I might discover something in her fiction that will change my perspective. After all, she's such a talented writer, and there's bound to be more hidden gems waiting for me to uncover.

This is the second Anne Lamott book that I have had the pleasure of reading.

She has crafted a main character, Jennifer, who is frustratingly nonchalant when it comes to drugs, sex, alcohol, and even her own ambitions (or perhaps the lack thereof).

Despite this, Jennifer still manages to be charming and likable, the kind of person you would love to strike up a conversation with.

The book is truly fascinating as it delves into the life of this young woman and her family.

It offers a unique perspective on the challenges and joys that come with growing up and finding one's place in the world.

Lamott's writing is engaging and thought-provoking, making this a must-read for anyone interested in character-driven stories.

Overall, I highly recommend this book to anyone looking for a captivating and memorable read.

I was truly overjoyed to stumble upon this amazing book by Anne Lamott once again.

HARD LAUGHTER chronicles the life of 23-year-old writer Jennifer. Her father, Wallace, is unfortunately diagnosed with a brain tumor.

Jennifer and her brothers, along with their friends and family, go through a wild ride of emotions. This tumultuous experience, however, ultimately brings this eccentric family even closer.

Lamott has an extraordinary ability to pay attention to the tiniest details and a skillful sense of humor. She breathes life into every character, and even the town they inhabit. As a result, the reader can't help but become deeply invested in their lives and care about each and every one of them.

It's a remarkable book that offers both heartache and hope, and it's a must-read for anyone who loves a good story.

I'm not entirely certain as to why I have such a penchant for this particular thing.

Even though it doesn't seem to lead anywhere in a traditional sense.

I suspect it might be due to the fact that the characters within it are so utterly messed up.

Their chaos and disarray somehow make me feel a sense of success.

Perhaps it's because in my own life, I strive for order and stability, and seeing these characters in such a state of turmoil makes me appreciate the relative calm and organization I have managed to achieve.

Or maybe it's just the voyeuristic pleasure of observing the train wreck that is their lives.

Either way, there's something about this thing that keeps drawing me in, despite its lack of a clear direction or resolution.

It's a mystery that I'm content to simply enjoy for now.
