Four stars on reread--I truly had a great liking for it. However, this review seems rather vague and not very helpful.

I first delved into this book at an extremely young age, probably around 13. Interestingly, it was because of this book that I purchased a porcelain horse during my very first trip to Germany!

The narrator of this book is a white, English, male Christian, with all the implications that come with it. He is smug, pretentious, and unyielding in his attitude of superiority. It is precisely due to his limited perspective (something he nonchalantly mentions to Karin) that the horrific events in the book are set in motion. Had he possessed even an ounce of compassion, perhaps the tragedy could have been averted.

Kathe (now known as Karin) is not so much a fully developed character as a prototype of a manic-pixie-dreamgirl. The narrator doesn't even view her as a human being (literally). Once again, if he had, perhaps she wouldn't have been pushed to commit her monstrous act. It is difficult to understand or pass judgment on her actions since we know absolutely nothing about her, except for the narrator's judgments.

This book is melodramatic and definitely overly wrought. The horror elements are minor and somewhat delayed. And the real mystery lies in why Karin fell so deeply in love with a doughy, uptight Englishman! Nevertheless, it still remains one of my favorite ghost stories. I have a great affection for the literary and pagan references within it.

Books have their weaker parts, but don't be distrustful. Instead, read and experience it until the end!

Certainly, porcelain is beautiful?

Books, like any other creation, may have sections that are not as strong as others. However, this should not deter us from delving into them completely. We should approach each book with an open mind and a willingness to explore its entirety.

Porcelain, on the other hand, is renowned for its beauty. Its delicate and intricate designs can captivate our eyes and hearts.

Both books and porcelain have their unique qualities that make them worthy of our attention and appreciation. We should not let the flaws in a book overshadow its potential, just as we should not overlook the beauty of porcelain due to its fragility.

So, let us continue to read books with enthusiasm and admire the beauty of porcelain with awe.

This I read years ago and loved the way it was told.

As far as I can recall, it was a modern romance. However, that's as much as I know about it.

It's quite possible that I'll pick it up and read it again one day.

For now, it's staying in that little corner of my bookshelf which is devoted to British authors named Adams: Richard and Douglas. Both of them are truly wonderful.

Their works have always had a special charm for me.

Maybe when I read this particular book again, I'll discover new aspects and details that I missed the first time around.

It's always exciting to revisit a story that once captured my heart.

I look forward to that day when I can once again immerse myself in the world created by these talented British authors.

Adams' story of a doomed whirlwind romance is masterfully crafted.

Alan, a porcelain dealer, has a latent sensitivity to the paranormal. But being an upright British fellow, he dismisses it as all nonsense.

Then, a beautiful woman enters his life, and Alan loses some of his cool British composure. She is mysterious about her past, but Alan doesn't seem to care much.

When he discovers that she feels the same way about him, the lovers embark on a seemingly-charmed romance. However, it is clear from the start that this romance can only end in tragedy.

Haunting and erotic, this book is one of my favorites. I re-read it every couple of years, as there are some details in the text that only reveal their significance upon a second reading.

The story's ability to combine elements of mystery, romance, and tragedy makes it a truly captivating read. It keeps you on the edge of your seat, wondering what will happen next and how the characters will meet their fates.

I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a good love story with a touch of the supernatural.

I truly enjoyed the beginning of the story, and the end was also very satisfying. However, the middle part seemed to drag on for quite a while with not much happening. I'm not entirely sure if I really "get it" either. There's a particular moment where Karin says, "you know who I am?" and Alan replies "yes," and he keeps emphasizing how he knows who she is. But I have no idea who she is. I think I know what she has done, but I don't understand the reason behind her actions. And also, if she has done that, why isn't Alan bothered by it? Maybe some other Goodreader can shed some light on this in the comments. Because either I have missed something that was explicitly mentioned earlier in the story, or there is something implicit that perhaps wasn't made clear enough. Or maybe there is a flaw in the logic.

I really like Richard Adams' novels though. I believe I only have two left to read - The Plague Dogs, which is sitting in my cupboard, and Maia, which I haven't been able to find yet. I'll be quite sad when there are no more of his books to read. The Girl in the Swing isn't as good as Watership Down or Shardik, in my opinion.

The piece presents beautifully written prose that immediately captivates the reader.

However, the plot is rather slight, with an easily anticipated twist that fails to provide much excitement or surprise.

The story is told from the perspective of a protagonist who, unfortunately, becomes less likeable as the narrative progresses. His decision-making skills steadily decline, making it difficult for the reader to root for him.

Despite the engaging prose, the lack of a more complex and unpredictable plot, combined with the unappealing protagonist, ultimately leaves the piece feeling somewhat unsatisfying.

It has the potential to be a great work, but with some improvements in these areas, it could truly shine.

Perhaps a more intricate plotline and a more sympathetic protagonist would make this piece more engaging and memorable.

As it stands, it is a decent read, but not one that will leave a lasting impression.

Nevertheless, the beautiful prose is a testament to the author's writing skills and gives hope that with further development, they could produce a truly outstanding work.

Possibly the best book I have read this year, at least in the realm of fiction. As the year draws to a close, I highly doubt it will be surpassed. But one can always hope for more great reads in the future.

Although this book is from the pen of the man who wrote Watership Down, it is in itself a very different work. It is a book specifically for adults, delving into dark secrets, passion, and an awakening regarding the unlocking of life for the narrator. The story is filled with complex emotions and hidden depths that keep the reader engaged from start to finish.

To say too much about the plot would be to give away too many spoilers. I guess, all told, the story could be considered somewhat sparse in detail. However, it is the beauty of the writing and the slow, darkening atmosphere that truly make this book what it is. The author has a remarkable ability to create a sense of mystery and anticipation that keeps the reader on the edge of their seat.

Basically, it is a love story, but one with dark elements that might bring to mind a classic like Wuthering Heights. The relationship between the characters is filled with turmoil, passion, and unspoken desires. It is a story that explores the depths of human emotion and the consequences of our actions.

My edition contains the name Karin for the main character, a name that I believe was changed in later editions due to a legal challenge. However, I doubt if it matters which edition is read. The name change shouldn't have any significant impact on the overall experience of this brooding and yet strangely joyous book. It is a work that will stay with you long after you have turned the final page.

This is an outstanding ghost story that expends the majority of its energy on the construction of character, atmosphere, and setting.

Alan, despite possessing a curious psychic ability, is leading a conventional middle-class life in the south of England. It is in Denmark that he encounters the enigmatic yet beautiful Karin. After a whirlwind romance, he brings her back to England and they tie the knot. All along, he refrains from asking her questions about her background, and this is where the devastation lies.

The book progresses at a slow pace, with precision and evocativeness. The ending is such that it completely pulls the rug out from under you. It is highly recommended!

This story manages to create a sense of mystery and unease that lingers throughout. The characters are well-developed, and the setting adds to the overall spookiness. It's a must-read for fans of ghost stories who appreciate a well-crafted narrative.

Strangely disquieting story that could be a romance novel.

It's about a young German girl who is living in Denmark.

And there is a British ceramics dealer.

But it isn't just a simple romance.

The story is beautiful, with a lyrical quality that draws the reader in.

It is also disturbing, making you question the relationships and events that unfold.

And often, it is quite hot, adding an element of passion and intensity.

Overall, it's a unique and captivating story that defies expectations and keeps you on the edge of your seat.

You'll find yourself completely immersed in the world of the young German girl and the British ceramics dealer, eager to see what will happen next.

It's a story that will stay with you long after you've finished reading.

Sheer brilliance!

This is truly one of my all-time favorite books ever written. It is an absolute masterpiece that manages to be both poignant and dark, with an erotic undertone that never crosses the line into being gross. What makes it even more remarkable is its ability to be incredibly creepy, tapping into a primordial theme that lies at the very heart of the most enduring myths.

The author has a rare talent for creating a world that is both familiar and yet completely otherworldly, drawing the reader in and holding them captive from the very first page. The characters are complex and well-developed, and the story unfolds in a way that keeps you on the edge of your seat, never quite sure what is going to happen next.

If you are looking for a book that will challenge you, make you think, and leave you with a sense of wonder and awe, then this is the one for you. I cannot recommend it highly enough.
