The story is truly marred by deeply disturbing and entirely unnecessary pervy sex scenes. It features a 15-year-old girl who endures a harrowing ordeal. She is first abused by her step-father, a violation that shatters her innocence. Then, she is callously sold into slavery. In this cruel and unjust situation, she is forced to become a 'bed slave', suffering repeated rapes. Later, she is made into a courtesan.

It is important to note that enslaved people, by the very nature of slavery, cannot give consent. The events described in this story are not only immoral but also a reflection of a darker side of society.

The 80s were indeed a different time. Such content would most likely not have been published in the mainstream today, as society has become more aware of the importance of protecting the rights and dignity of individuals, especially those who are vulnerable. We must learn from the mistakes of the past and strive to create a more just and empathetic world.

I read this book when it first hit the shelves.

At that time, I was a young 22-year-old, and that was a whopping 40 years ago.

Strangely enough, I wasn't overly shocked by some of the situations presented in the book.

However, the story had a unique way of revealing the characters.

It made you truly see and understand their struggles.

Their lives were being propelled by the various forces at play.

They/She were constantly surviving difficult situations and making the best of their circumstances.

I was completely captivated by the story, by her adventure.

And I was utterly fascinated by the imaginary culture, era, and people that the author had created.

I firmly believe that it's one of the best books I've ever read.

My words might not be able to fully capture the depth of my thoughts.

But then again, I'm not a professional writer or an author.

I simply have a deep love for a good story that can transport me to another world while I'm safely snuggled in the corner of my sofa.

It's those kinds of stories that have the power to touch our hearts and expand our minds.

This book did just that for me, and I'll always cherish the experience of reading it.

I read this particular book during my teenage years. There was an abundance of sexual content within its pages, which perhaps was the main reason I was so drawn to it. However, as I recall, there was also a captivating story. Even today, it still sits on my bookshelf. But I highly doubt that I will pick it up and read it again. Over the years, there have been numerous books of a similar nature.

Jacqueline Carey is, in my opinion, a much better author nowadays.

I took the time to check the publication date, and it turns out that this book was released in 1984. At that time, I was already 30 years old. So, I really have no excuse for my initial attraction to it. In fact, it probably was a very good book back then.

Interestingly enough, it is written by the same author as Watership Down. This connection adds an extra layer of intrigue to the book's history.

Maia is a central character in this story, and yet, she is not as engaging as one might hope. Her thoughts are filled with pedophalic musings, which is both disturbing and off-putting.

It's truly a shame because the book has the potential to be so much more. However, with such inappropriate and uncomfortable content, it's difficult to recommend.

At 1200 pages long, it feels like a slog to get through. There are definitely better books out there that can offer a more fulfilling reading experience.

It's important to choose our reading material carefully, especially when it comes to content that can have a negative impact on our mental state. In this case, it might be best to skip this one and look for something else.

It's always a great deal of fun to engage with "a bouncy bouncy girl," as Richard Adams affectionately refers to Maia. The way this 16-year-old character is portrayed makes me envision a classic anime figure. She has long wavy blond hair that is almost white, big starry blue eyes, a smile that never fades, large double D bouncy breasts, and a southern accent. Thank goodness for the maps and the character guide at the beginning.

Adam's writing is truly descriptive and immersive, which I adore. Is the story a bit misogynistic? Yes, but it starts off with all sorts of soft porn and it's kind of an old book written by an old white guy. Why do I keep rereading this every 10 years? I love Maia and her best friend/lover Occula. The world-building is excellent and he describes parties that I would love to attend. So I guess it's basically a mental vacation, something I desperately need at the start of Miss 'Rona's visit.

If you do decide to read it, get the black cover edition. It's much prettier than the mauve one. Lol.

Always a winner!

I first came across this book perhaps thirty-four years ago when I was a young adult. Since then, I have reread it four times in my life. Each time, I have discovered new aspects that I truly like. The writing in this book is simply outstanding. The descriptions of the scenery are vivid and detailed, allowing the reader to envision the settings clearly. The perspective from which the story is told adds depth and interest. Moreover, the character development throughout the book is wonderful. You really get to know the characters on a profound level, their personalities, their motives, and their growth. I have a penchant for long and detailed books, and this was the very first one that I read which was so extensive. However, it is most definitely worth it. It manages to keep you engaged and occupied for the entire length of the book. I have thoroughly enjoyed it time and time again. Without a doubt, I will read it once more in a few years.

If "Shardik" was essentially a fable about the nature of faith, religion, and power, then "Maya" is pure genre literature.

The world is ill-conceived, the heroes are mostly cardboard, their actions are poorly motivated, and the rhythm is jerky.

It seems that apart from the erotic scenes, the author was little interested in much when writing this outrageously inflated novel.

Perhaps the author was more focused on titillating the reader rather than creating a deep and meaningful work.

The lack of development in the characters and the plot makes it difficult for the reader to become fully engaged.

However, it is important to note that genre literature has its own appeal and can provide entertainment value.

Some readers may enjoy the fast-paced action and steamy scenes, even if the overall quality of the writing is not up to par.

Nevertheless, for those seeking a more profound and thought-provoking reading experience, "Maya" may not be the best choice.

Maia is a captivating sword and sandals epic adventure that unfolds in the fictional realm of the Beklan empire.

Maia's journey is a remarkable one, starting as a peasant and slave, she rises to become a renowned hero of the Empire, known as the 'Serrelinda', and finally, she finds herself in Suban, a disputed province on the borders of the Beklan empire.

Throughout her adventures, Maia encounters a diverse cast of fascinating characters and explores a richly detailed environment. The descriptions of life in Bekla, the capital city of the Beklan Empire, add depth and authenticity to the story.

While there are elements of war and battles in the novel, they are not overly detailed. Instead, the focus is on the political intrigue and the consequences of these conflicts, which are often revealed through messengers delivering the news to the political elite.

At crucial moments in the story, Maia acts with determination and for the greater good. However, her motives are frequently misinterpreted by the political elites, leading to a series of exciting adventures that are both enjoyable to read and operate on multiple levels.

On one hand, the story centers around Maia's personal adventures, making her the central figure of the book. On the other hand, her adventures are intertwined with a complex and charged political atmosphere as the tensions within the Empire escalate to a crisis point.

In addition to her thrilling adventures, Maia's personal history is also a coming-of-age story. She evolves from a child with legitimate fears to a mature and self-sufficient woman.

All of these elements come together to form an intricately conceived plot that is described with great skill and mastery of the English language by Richard Adams. It is no wonder that this novel has won literary prizes.

If you have a penchant for this type of fantasy literature, as I do, then Maia is definitely a book worth reading.

I have read this book previously in hard copy, and I was truly delighted to discover that it was now available in the Kindle format.

The book itself is worthy of a 4-star rating from me. It contains engaging content and offers valuable insights.

However, I must express my disappointment regarding the Kindle version. Would it have been that difficult for them to edit the Kindle edition to eliminate the numerous typos (scan errors)?

These errors were so abundant that they constantly distracted me while reading. It really detracted from the overall experience of enjoying the book in digital form.

I hope that the publishers will take notice of this issue and make the necessary corrections in future editions to provide a more seamless reading experience for Kindle users.

I really liked this when I first read it (simply for the sake of having some fun) during my high school days.

Looking back now, I fully recognize that it is extremely sexist. However, just because it has this flaw doesn't necessarily mean that I have to completely hate it.

There is still something about it that brings back those memories from my youth. Maybe it's the way it made me feel at that time, or the fact that it was a part of my reading experience during those formative years.

For all these reasons, I decided to give it 4 stars. It's not a perfect piece of work by any means, but it does hold a special place in my heart because of the memories it evokes.

I think it's important to be able to look at things from different perspectives and not just write them off because they have some negative aspects. This way, we can still appreciate the good things about them while also being aware of their flaws.

So, even though this may be a controversial rating, I stand by it because it truly reflects my feelings towards this particular piece of writing.
