If we look at this book in comparison with other Ford biographies, its arrangement by topic rather than chronologically is perhaps a distinct selling point.

It functioned effectively in highlighting specific issues or values that were central to his life. However, I found myself desiring more chronological clarification regarding precisely when and how certain specific events unfolded or influenced one another.

This could have shed light on his motivations, moods, and other such context, thereby better assisting the reader in forming their own conclusions about his character.

As it stands, there are a few repetitions - almost word-for-word references to things that have already been presented - but these seemed mostly unhelpful.

I did appreciate that the book was, for the most part, balanced in acknowledging both the positive and negative aspects of Ford and his life.

I don't wish to use the term "sugar-coated" here as that would not be accurate, but the book did seem to me to have an undercurrent of a "boys will be boys" attitude, with a certain amount of shoulder shrugging over the darker aspects of the Henry Ford story.

Personally, I found the documentary on Ford from PBS' American Experience to be more direct and productive in grappling with this complex legacy.

He was an interesting man, yet he had some rather off-putting qualities. It was quite ironic that he didn't have a driver's license, considering he was apparently a horrible driver. One might wonder how he managed to get around without a license, or if his lack of driving skills was the reason he never bothered to obtain one. Perhaps he relied on public transportation or the kindness of others to get from place to place. But regardless of how he traveled, his reputation as a bad driver preceded him. People who had the misfortune of being in a car with him would often tell tales of his erratic driving habits and close calls on the road. It was a strange combination of traits that made him both fascinating and a bit of a liability.

I have a great passion for reading about the history of early car entrepreneurs. Their vision was truly remarkable as they aimed to create something that had never been made before. Steven Watts did an outstanding job in this regard. He managed to locate all the interviews with those who had worked with or knew Henry Ford in some way. Then, he skillfully took those conversations, along with news and magazine articles, and biographies, and wove them into an amazing story.

Mr Watts, like many others, couldn't quite understand why Henry Ford was so vehemently opposed to labor unions, especially when he provided his workers with the highest pay (a $5 work day), short hours, and numerous benefits. However, Ford was insistent on maintaining total control of the Ford Motor Company throughout his life. He wouldn't even allow his own son, Edsel, to make decisions.

This book is rather lengthy and contains many side stories. Some of these stories go back in time, while others project ahead, which might cause some confusion for the reader. Nevertheless, it is an absolute must-read for any car enthusiast.

It offers a fascinating insight into the minds and lives of the early car pioneers and their remarkable achievements.

The first half of the book was truly remarkable, offering a great deal of enjoyment. It was filled with interesting details and engaging stories that kept me hooked from the very beginning.

However, as I reached the second half of the book, I noticed that the pace slowed down a bit. This made it a bit more of a challenge to maintain the same level of excitement.

Despite this minor drawback, the book as a whole provides an excellent and in-depth look at Henry Ford and the fascinating story behind the creation of the Ford Motor Company. It offers valuable insights into the mind of a visionary entrepreneur and the many challenges and obstacles he had to overcome.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone interested in the history of the automotive industry or the life and work of Henry Ford. It is a well-written and engaging account that is sure to leave a lasting impression.

Good, a solid three stars.

Watts has clearly put in a great deal of effort in his research and is a competent writer. However, I wasn't overly enthusiastic about the format.

Up to the point where Ford has established the Ford company and developed the Model T, it is presented chronologically. But after that, he covers various aspects of Ford's activities over the decades in chapters with appropriate titles like “Reformer”, “Politician”, “Bigot”, “Father” and so on.

This format provides a convenient compendium. For example, if you only wanted to know about Ford's antisemitism, you could easily find the relevant information. However, it does lead to a certain amount of repetition and fails to give a comprehensive understanding of what Ford was doing at any specific time.

Overall, while Watts' work has its merits, the format could be improved to offer a more seamless and in-depth exploration of Ford's life and activities.

I truly relished this book.

As a "Detroiter" who had only a passing acquaintance with Henry Ford in general terms, I was only moderately ready for this remarkable, thoroughly researched, and thought-provoking volume.

All too often, bibliographers become so smitten with their subject that the "story" is rife with revisionist drivel.

However, Mr. Watts presents the Ford story "warts and all."

It is an entirely captivating narrative about a somewhat neglected subject.

The book offers a comprehensive and unvarnished look at Henry Ford, delving into both his achievements and his flaws.

It provides valuable insights into the man and his impact on the automotive industry and society as a whole.

Reading this book has been a truly enlightening experience, and I would highly recommend it to anyone interested in history, business, or the life of Henry Ford.
