This book is very much what it claims to be, an essential history.

It provides a quite decent overview of the broad facts, happenings, and people. The author has done a great job of presenting a comprehensive picture of the subject matter.

In addition to the detailed text, the book also includes a good set of maps. These maps are extremely helpful in visualizing the geographical context and understanding the events and movements that took place.

Whether you are a history enthusiast or simply looking to gain a better understanding of a particular period or topic, this book is definitely worth reading. It offers a wealth of information in an accessible and engaging manner.

Overall, it is a valuable addition to any history library and a great resource for anyone interested in learning about the past.

This piece of writing has numerous editing errors.

Some of the statements within it are also inaccurate at times.

However, when considering all the things I have come across, it is overall not the worst.

It could potentially be improved with careful proofreading and fact-checking.

The errors might have occurred due to haste or lack of attention to detail.

Nevertheless, it still has some redeeming qualities that prevent it from being completely terrible.

With a bit of effort and revision, it could be transformed into a more polished and reliable piece of work.

It is important to always strive for accuracy and clarity in any form of writing to ensure that the intended message is effectively conveyed.

At the turn of the 20th Century, the Japanese were deeply concerned about the ownership of Port Arthur in China by Russia. This led them to launch an initially un-declared war.

It was highly unlikely that Russia would attack Japan. Therefore, Japan needed diplomatic finesse to maintain the support of the UK and the USA.

Wars in the Far East are seldom known or discussed outside academic or wargaming circles. However, Jukes manages to clearly and concisely explain the major movements and battles of this short war. This war could be regarded as a precursor to the First World War and surely didn't ease the Tsar's domestic troubles.

The Japanese achieved remarkable success at sea. But, although they were victorious on land, they lost a significant number of soldiers in their attempts to take Port Arthur. As is often the case with this series, the brief review of the end of the conflict and its impact on the involved countries and those further afield is as fascinating as the main book itself.

As is quite typical of Osprey publications, this book offers a concise introduction and overview of the Russo-Japanese War of 1904 - 1905.

It delves into a wide array of subjects. It explores the global tensions that led to the war, covering both the land and sea campaigns. It also provides some insights into each country's military and the political consequences of the war.

Overall, I found it worthwhile to read in order to gain an understanding of the conduct of the war and the related events. However, the review of the land campaign was rather brief and in some parts, it was difficult to follow due to the lack of detailed description of certain events. This was also the case with the account of the naval movements, although not to the same degree.

I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in obtaining a quick overview or as a precursor to a more in-depth study of the subject.
