My absolute favorites include: “27 Wagons Full of Cotton,” “Portrait of a Madonna,” “Auto-Da-Fé,” “Lord Byron’s Love Letter,” “Hello from Bertha,” and “This Property is Condemned.” I've noticed that Tennessee Williams has an affinity for a good damsel in distress character. So many of these plays feature female characters who seem to exist in a dream world, much like Blanche in "A Streetcar Named Desire." They appear so ethereal and disconnected from the real world. It's not a criticism, just an observation! The only aspect that I didn't completely adore about this book was that it could be a bit confusing at times. Reading a 10-page play and then immediately delving into another with a different plot and set of characters sometimes led to things getting muddled in my head. But all in all, I did have an enjoyable experience with this book!

But, for some reason, it's incredibly easy to envision Shakespeare in other locations and at other times.

This brings me to Tennessee Williams. I generally have a liking for him. However, when reading these one-act plays, for some reason, it dawned on me how closely they seem to be tied to the American South during the blues/jazz era. That's how specific his work appears to me. When I think of his plays, I can almost feel the sweat. I can picture beads of water rolling down the outside of a glass filled with some overly sweet liquor. Everything is both sluggish and intense. His characters often long for more shade.
The plays presented here are one-acts. They came across to me as sketches, usually character sketches. And there's nothing amiss with that. There were at least three, and perhaps more, interpretations of Blanche Dubois, presented in different ways. For the most part, these plays seemed more like character revelations rather than truly dramatic works. I might have overlooked something, and my perception of them could change if I saw them performed. But in the majority of them, I didn't observe much in the way of movement or momentum. And the characters, for the most part, seemed to me like rehashes of characters I had already encountered in his other plays. Consequently, reading them didn't have a profound impact on me. But then again, reading is indeed a poor way to be introduced to plays. The unfortunate reality is that there is essentially little or no opportunity to witness any of these works being performed. That's something I would likely enjoy.
