The setting of this story is in 1949 in the Central High School neighborhood of St. Paul, Minnesota.

All the places, character types, and dialogues remained true to what they were in 1957 when I traveled that neighborhood from my home on St. Paul's East Side and Johnson High School. They were still true in the 1980s and 1990s when our daughters attended Central High School.

The underlying theme about streetcars involves organized crime, which dominated business in the Twin Cities. One of the best metropolitan electric transit networks was literally torn out of the streets from 1950 to 1953. What a chaotic mess it was! Rework was necessary in the 1990s. General Motors, Standard Oil of California, Firestone, and others were convicted of criminal conspiracy, resulting in a $5000 fine. The conversion to diesel fuel buses was not only an environmental disaster but also cost hundreds of jobs.

My mother and I were on one of the final runs of the Selby-Lake streetcar to downtown Minneapolis. The main characters in this fictional history often rode that streetcar route, experiencing the changes and challenges that came with the decline of the streetcar system.
