Ultimately, this book turns out to be a rather disappointing read. If only the author had adhered strictly to the actual facts regarding Conrad's life, instead of including a tiresome recapitulation of the plots of his novels. Moreover, the addition of the uninteresting details about Jane Anderson at the end really detracts from the overall quality of the biography. However, it has managed to achieve one thing - it has successfully sent me back to Conrad's novels. Despite its flaws, it has piqued my interest in exploring his works once again. I can't help but wonder what could have been if the author had focused solely on Conrad's life and omitted the extraneous and unengaging elements. Perhaps then, this could have been a truly taut, fascinating biography of a remarkable man.
His outstanding research regarding Conrad's life and relationships, along with his sleek style of writing, truly captivated me. As Meyers traced the adventures and writing career of this literary figure, it became evident that Conrad was a remarkable individual. He chose to write his novels not in his native Polish, nor in his second language, French, but rather in English. This decision added an extra layer of complexity and intrigue to his work. Meyers' detailed exploration of Conrad's life and the factors that influenced his writing provided a fascinating insight into the mind of this great author. Through his research, Meyers was able to bring Conrad's story to life, allowing readers to better understand and appreciate his contributions to the literary world.
