One of the best stories written by Joseph Conrad is truly remarkable.

Unlike many of the reviews found here, this story is not simply about a domestic drama and the end of a relationship. That would be an extremely surface level interpretation of the story, completely incongruent with the profound themes that Conrad explores in his other works.

What this story is really about is a deeply held belief in an idealized way of life that gets shattered. It delves into the question of whether one can enter into a relationship, fully aware that their partner no longer adheres to that ideal.

The answer for the protagonist's wife is yes, while for the protagonist himself, it is no. This dichotomy adds a layer of complexity and depth to the story, making it a thought-provoking exploration of human nature, love, and the impact of shattered ideals on relationships.

Conrad's masterful storytelling allows readers to truly engage with the characters and their internal struggles, making this story a classic that continues to resonate with audiences today.

BEAUTIFUL

Beauty is an essential aspect of life. It can be found in nature, in art, and in the people around us. A beautiful sunset, a painting that takes our breath away, or a kind smile from a stranger can all bring us a sense of joy and wonder.

Masterpiece

A masterpiece is a work of art that is considered to be of the highest quality. It is a creation that stands the test of time and continues to inspire generations. Whether it is a novel, a symphony, or a sculpture, a masterpiece has the power to move us emotionally and intellectually.

The way I believe in life

I believe that life should be filled with beauty and masterpieces. We should strive to create and appreciate the beautiful things in life, and to leave a lasting legacy through our own works of art. By doing so, we can make the world a more beautiful and meaningful place.

Bello questo racconto di Conrad, avrebbe potuto intitolarsi Scene da un matrimonio.

A couple married for just a few years - at the center of society's attention, ambitious and observant of conventions, eager to take advantage of every opportunity that a society empty of ideas or emotions but rich in respectability and hypocrisy offers to those who move carefully so as not to break balances but only to be seen - shatters, crumbles, collapses in a disaster of rubble, consuming the drama with very few broken, stammered dialogues, interrupted by sobs or hysterical laughter, that involve only the two protagonists.

It could be a theatrical representation that takes place within the walls of the house, far from the eyes of strangers who look and judge. The peak of dramatic intensity is reached thanks to a deep psychological excavation of the man, who wanders in a room full of mirrors that reflect him and multiply his gestures and thoughts, while the woman, who fled the house and then returned, remains in the shadow of the spotlights, mysterious and silent until just a few of her words trigger a very strong and unexpected reaction in her husband: “You never loved me. If I had believed that you loved me, I would not have returned..”

As if they had caused a short circuit, the woman's words determine an ending in which the thoughts and reflections developed so far are reversed, and the consequent actions of the husband confront a different, intolerable and irremediable “truth”: the cruelty of love.

Maybe it's a bit harsh as a rating, we're rather on a 2.5. Nice but not crazy. I would have preferred to have the girl's point of view and also that of the place. But it's still entertaining.

It seems that the overall assessment is not extremely high, with a score around 2.5. While it has its nice aspects, it doesn't completely blow one's mind. The person expressing this thought wishes they could have had more insights from the perspective of the girl and also from that of the specific location or establishment. However, despite these shortcomings, it still manages to provide some entertainment value. This shows that even though it may not be perfect, there are still elements that make it somewhat enjoyable.

Perhaps further exploration or a different approach could have enhanced the experience and provided a more comprehensive understanding. Nevertheless, it's interesting to note that even with its flaws, it still has the ability to engage and amuse to a certain extent.

**"A Masterpiece by Joseph Conrad"**

Joseph Conrad's short story is truly a remarkable piece of literature. It has the power to touch our hearts deeply, especially when compared to some of the mediocre or simply entertaining novels out there. The fact that he can convey so much in just a few pages is a testament to his great skill as a writer.

In this particular story, we are presented with a complex and emotional narrative. Although it may not be a cheerful one, it is well worth reading. I don't want to give away any spoilers, but it is a real gem. The story unfolds in just three or four scenes, yet it manages to show a powerful confrontation within a marriage. It feels so modern and real, as if it could be happening in our own lives. The initial description of a life planned by custom and social norms is a reflection of our world today, and it's amazing to think that this was written in 1898. The thoughts and emotions of the couple, which we catch glimpses of through their actions, are truly exceptional.
As the translator points out in the final comment, this story is not your typical soap opera. It's something more profound and thought-provoking. It may not be what we expect from Conrad, who is often associated with the struggle of man against the wild. But as we finish the novel, we realize that it is indeed one of his themes, with a clash and an abandonment of the social. Overall, this is a masterpiece that will stay with you long after you've finished reading it.

English Review

This is a truly outstanding short story by Joseph Conrad. It has the ability to move us to the core, especially when contrasted with some of the lesser works or those that are merely for entertainment. The fact that he can pack so much into a relatively short space is a marvel of his craftsmanship.

In this particular tale, we are treated to a complex and emotional drama. While it may not be a light-hearted or joyous affair, it is most definitely worth our time and attention. I refrain from revealing any spoilers, but rest assured, it is a true gem. The story unfolds in a mere three or four scenes, yet manages to present a powerful and intense confrontation within a marriage. It feels incredibly contemporary and real, as if it could be playing out in our own lives. The initial portrayal of a life dictated by custom and social convention is a mirror image of our modern world, and it is astonishing to think that this was written way back in 1898. The thoughts and feelings of the couple, as glimpsed through their actions and emotions, are truly remarkable.

As noted in the final comment by the translator, this story is not your typical melodrama. It is something far more profound and intellectually stimulating. It may not conform to our expectations of Conrad, who is often associated with the struggle of man against the forces of nature. However, as we reach the end of the novel, we come to realize that it is indeed one of his central themes, with a conflict and a rejection of the social order. In conclusion, this is a masterpiece that will leave a lasting impression on the reader.

I won't love this work as much as "Heart of Darkness", but I do love the author's style of writing. The drama within it is truly captivating.

However, I have to give it a -1 star rating. There was very little distance between the narrator and the male protagonist. At times, this made it rather difficult to read. The male protagonist wholeheartedly believes that his feelings as a man are oh so very big and important, especially when compared to the seemingly little emotions that women feel. This lack of distance gives off a strong masculine and conservative vibe. It's rather hard for me to determine if this was done intentionally or not.

Nonetheless, despite these drawbacks, the author's writing style still manages to hold some allure. It makes me curious to see what other works he or she might have produced.

“The Return” by Joseph Conrad offers a profound exploration of the life of Alvan Hervey, a well-to-do and conventional Englishman residing in London.

Prompted by a literary acquaintance, Hervey makes an investment in a society paper, which surprisingly yields significant profits.

Nevertheless, the course of the story takes an unexpected turn when his wife departs due to an affair with one of his literary associates.

Although not overly heartbroken, Hervey seriously contemplates divorce, mainly incensed by the disruption of his otherwise orderly life.

To his astonishment, his wife returns, seemingly filled with remorse.

Misinterpreting her actions as a longing for redemption, Hervey reaffirms his authority, completely oblivious to the more profound issues plaguing their relationship.

The narrative reaches its conclusion as Hervey comes to the realization that reconciliation is an impossibility and flees the house, never to return.

This story delves into the realms of societal norms, marital strife, and the tragedy of misunderstanding.

Hervey's response is firmly rooted in shame, mirroring both moral suffering and the weight of societal expectations.

It serves as a poignant reminder of the complex and often tumultuous nature of human relationships within the context of a rigid social framework.

Alvan Hervey returns home from work and discovers a letter written by his wife placed on his bed, even though she is supposed to arrive at dinner time. He reads the letter and a chasm opens up beneath his feet: after five years of marriage, she is going to leave him for another man.

This story is more than a domestic drama. It portrays the belief in an idealistic way of life that is shattered, how far one can go in a relationship when the other ceases to see themselves in that ideal, and how marriage can be a vehicle for belonging and credit in a society. For me, it is a good example of how one should not be married: false impressions, lack of communication, complacency, taking the relationship for granted.

“He thought him an idiot for having big front teeth (it was appropriate to have small and uniform teeth).”

“The life that, for a well-structured mind, should have been a reason for congratulation, seemed to him, for a second or a little more, something perfectly intolerable.”

“But everyone got married. It was all of humanity that had gone crazy!”

“the unforgivable truth of the valid appearances. (…) We simply had to remain without any stain or insult, in order to preserve our place in the forefront of life. He said to himself: I have to endure as best I can.”

“For a few moments, he ceased to be a member of society with status, career, and a name associated with all that, like the label of any complex compound. He was a simple human being, far from the wonderful world of innocent believers.”

“the certainty that evil has to be forgiven (…) in order to make life possible.”

“We all desire that our life and the life around us be beautiful and pure. Now, a scandal among people with our status is disastrous for morality, a fatal influence on the general tone of the class that is very important.”

“Frequently, in life, in the highest conception of life, sincerity is, in some circumstances, nothing less than a crime. Temptation is no excuse for anything.”

“The placidity of truth and the peace of death can only be guaranteed through a grand disdain that embraces all the useful subjections of life.”

“There can be no life without faith and love, faith in a heart and love for a human being! That touch of grace, whose help, unique in life, is the privilege granted to the least deserving.”

“It was not a question of feeling more or less pain (…) It was a question of truth or lie.”
