The first book in this series was truly more beautiful.

There was a greater sense of pace, which made the story flow smoothly and kept the readers engaged from start to finish.

Even the characters seemed more in tune with each other and with the overall plot.

This time around, however, Michael and Nikki's transition from being two investigators to two boyfriends felt rather abrupt, as if there was no real development or build-up.

It was as if they simply became a couple without anything changing in their relationship dynamics.

We'll have to wait and see how things unfold in the third book of the series.

Michael is dispatched by Seline to journey to the identical ski resort in Jackson Hole where individuals are mysteriously disappearing and \\"darkness is palpable\\". She informs him that \\"the darkness is intertwined with {his} past\\" and it is something he must confront. He is initially resistant upon learning that Nikki will also be present, handling her own case, but eventually relents when she reveals that without his assistance, Nikki will perish.


They embark on their journey to the ski resort as husband and wife on paper, while grappling with their emotions that have only intensified since their separation. Michael rebuffs all of Nikki's overtures, stating \\"My world is darkness, Nikki. Yours is light. We cannot be.\\" Despite the intensity of his feelings for her, he refuses to foster their relationship due to the fear that he will be unable to ensure her safety. Nikki, however, does not capitulate. She persistently chips away at the walls he has erected, to the extent that Michael realizes he may never be able to walk away from her again.


I derived greater enjoyment from this story compared to book 1, perhaps because I have now become accustomed to Keri Arthur's earlier writing style or perhaps due to the captivating relationship between Nikki and Michael. In any event, I eagerly anticipate reading the remainder of the series.

Nikki has been separated from Michael for 6 months. During these 6 months, Michael has been slowly relearning to control his hunger, and he has also resolved to stay away from Nikki. His life, world, and job are simply too perilous for her, and he is firmly determined to safeguard her.

However, unfortunately for him, one of his jobs coincides with one of hers. She has another missing teenager and a lost contact's family member, neither of which she is willing to overlook, and she certainly isn't going to abandon it just because Michael asks her to.

They are reunited in an exclusive resort while trying to locate a group of missing people. There, they discover both magical and personal surprises waiting for them, and an entire species is relying on them for survival.

After the previous book, I was somewhat skeptical about this series, still anticipating something more distinctive to occur to set it apart. While the character interactions largely conform to some very long-established patterns, the plot of this book deviated from the tropes. We were introduced to some completely new creatures, and the twisty plotline utilized them in a rather novel and interesting way, resulting in a quite original story that could not be entirely predicted as so much was concealed and concealed well. It was a plot with elements I haven't encountered elsewhere, placing the series on my mental map as a unique creation with its own exclusive features that are both captivating and fascinating, making me eager to read the next book to see where the author's imagination will lead me and how much further this world will expand.

This world is still closely guarded by the author. In some respects, I like this. Similar to the first book, the writing style is quite well-handled in terms of descriptiveness. I don't think the fight scenes are necessarily outstanding, often giving me the impression of people queuing up for battle and a few anti-climaxes, but they do function adequately. We do have some overly emotional monologues, but again, they are relatively restrained compared to what I've seen elsewhere and even in the first book. The writing is cautious, it has some hiccups but they are minor. It controls description and unnecessary exposition, although I must say I would like a bit more world-building regarding vampires and the organization Michael works for. However, the fact that the hints prompt me to learn more is a positive sign in itself.

There is also a significant improvement in the relationship between Michael and Nikki. Now, it isn't flawless, but a lot of what isn't perfect is also challenged, at least to some extent. I've stated numerous times before how much I detest rushed relationships. And Nikki and Michael lamenting how they can't possibly live without each other despite only having known each other for a week is definitely rushed. I just never sense a solid foundation for this relationship. Even Michael points it out with this line: "We barely even know each other. We may share thoughts and we may share passion, but we have never once shared our dreams or our desires for the future. I don't know your favorite movie or color or food or even what you like to read. And you know as little about me." I cheered when I read this line. And I cheered that Nikki was discussing finding these things out because that would be great, them determining that they have good potential and it would be worthwhile to see if they could build a relationship and develop it further. I was on board for that, even with Nikki being angry because Michael wouldn't attempt to see if they could have a relationship.

Nikki is reluctant to admit that she misses Michael, who willingly disappeared after her last case. Her latest case has unfortunately landed Jake in the hospital, and now she is on the road in search of the missing teen she was supposed to follow. To make matters more complicated, Michael has also been sent to assist Nikki, and the close proximity between them seems to be overwhelming for Michael.


I found the second book in this series to be a bit lackluster. It took me quite a while to truly become engaged in the story. Nikki appeared to lose her composure around the middle of the book, which was a bit disappointing. However, I will still continue with the series as I really enjoyed the first book. I'm hopeful that the third book will bring more excitement and pick up the pace.

I'm eager to see how the story develops and if Nikki and Michael can sort out their complicated relationship. The mystery aspect of the plot also has the potential to be quite interesting if it is further developed. Overall, while this book had its flaws, I'm still looking forward to seeing what the future holds for this series.
