This was the Jolly Girls Book Club latest read! I don't usually read "self help" books and was a bit nervous especially once I realized I had gotten my hands on the unabridged version of this book. But WOW! What a life changing book! I feel like if you read this book with an open mind you can take so many important lessons away from it. The priority in my life right now is not getting rich, I can barely make it through the day with all 4 children in tact. But what I love about this book, is how it instructs you to succeed in all aspects of your life. I love the parts about positive thinking and having a good attitude. Since this book was written in the 1930's some may say parts are dated, and they most likely are. But I found that to be part of the fun of reading it! I think it was so cool how the writer was contemporaries with people like Ford and Edison and Alexander Grahm Bell! He studied these amazing men first hand, and his experiences are invaluable. I have always believed our minds are so powerful and that our true potential is untapped. This book helped me to make a goal to reach that potential and to have the desire to become a success in everything that I decide to do.

Update 2020-07-08:
This “deluxe edition” is by far the best version of the book and i have read it many times over. In “the monk who sold his Ferrari” robin Sharma correctly calls this a spiritual book so the title is somewhat misleading. Excellent to have in the library at home.

Expert counsel: “The engineer advised that the project had failed, because the owners were not familiar with “fault lines”. His calculations showed that the vein would be found just three feet from where the Darby’s had stopped drilling! That is exactly where it was found!
The “junk” man took millions of dollars in ore from the mine, because he knew enough to seek expert counsel before giving up.” p.7

“He recalled, too, his mistake in having stopped only three feet from gold. “But”, he said “that experience was a blessing in disguise. It taught me to keep on keeping on, no matter how hard the going may be, a lesson I needed to learn before I could succeed in anything.” p.11

“Success comes to those who become success conscious. Failure comes to those who indifferently allow themselves to become failure conscious.” p.14

“Henry Ford is a success, because he understands, and applies the principles of success. One of them is desire: knowing what one wants.” p.16

Wishing: “Every human being who reaches the age of understanding of the purpose of money wishes for it. Wishing will not bring riches. But desiring riches with a state of mind that becomes an obsession, then planning definite ways and means to acquire riches, and backing those plans with persistence which does not recognize failure, will bring riches.” p.26

Faith: “Repetition of affirmation of orders to your subconscious mind is the only known method of voluntary development of the emotion of faith.” p.53

“The time will soon come when a man may breakfast in New York, and lunch in San Francisco.” p.114 (2025?)

”Truly, there is something to the idea that hero-worship is helpful, provided one worships a winner.” p.109

“It is one thing to want money - everyone wants more - but it is something entirely different to be worth more! Many people mistake their wants for their just dues. Your financial requirements or wants have nothing whatever to do with your worth. Your value is established entirely by your ability to render useful service or your capacity to induce others to render such service.” p. 176

Summary:

Money must be attracted by who you become. You must have a burning desire, faith that you will succeed, use auto suggestion, specialized knowledge, imagine and plan before you decide and then persist together with other people (your master mind group). Success and wealth will come through effort but poverty will come without effort. Also it takes time to harness our basic drives (sex transmutation) and get rid of fear (six ghosts of fear). Therefore you must take some calculated risk. You cannot care what other people think. You have to be focused like a laser on your goals, daily. You must visualize the achievement of your goals everyday. You must clearly see and feel it come to you. And you must be very precise in stating what you want in writing, in talking to yourself and others. Beware what enters your mind and let the subconscious mind work over the problem and then be quick to act when you see a solution to the getting of wealth. Also you must evaluate yourself clearly and objectively at least once a year and with the help of another person. Don’t stop before you hit the gold vein!

Mijn top vijf markeringen

A quitter never wins, and a winner never quits.

2. Relieve yourself forever of the fear of death by reaching a decision to accept death as an inescapable event. Whip the fear of poverty by reaching a decision to get along with whatever wealth you can accumulate without worry. Put your foot upon the neck of the fear of criticism by reaching a decision not to worry about what other people think, do or say. Eliminate the fear of old age by reaching a decision to accept it, not as a handicap, but as a great blessing which carries with it wisdom, self-control and understanding not known to youth. Acquit yourself of the fear of ill health by the decision to forget symptoms. Master the fear of loss of love by reaching a decision to get along without love, if that is necessary. Kill the habit of worry, in all its forms, by reaching a general, blanket decision that nothing life has to offer is worth the price of worry. With this decision will come poise, peace of mind and calmness of thought that will bring happiness.

3. Go back into your yesterdays, at times, and bathe your mind in the beautiful memories of past love. It will soften the influence of the present worries and annoyances. It will give you a source of escape from the unpleasant realities of life, and maybe – who knows? – your mind will yield to you, during this temporary retreat into the world of fantasy, ideas or plans which may change the entire financial or spiritual status of your life. If you believe yourself unfortunate because you have ‘loved and lost’, perish the thought. One who has loved truly can never lose entirely. Love is whimsical and temperamental. Its nature is ephemeral and transitory. It comes when it pleases and goes away without warning. Accept and enjoy it while it remains, but spend no time worrying about its departure. Worry will never bring it back.

4. The emotions of sex and jealousy, when mixed, may turn a person into an insane beast.

5. The desire for sexual expression is by far the strongest and most impelling of all the human emotions. For this very reason this desire, when harnessed and transmuted into action other than that of physical expression, may raise one to the status of a genius.

This book came to me at a time where I needed it. Napoleon hills writing gave me a sense of purpose it helped me reach a certain track in a time where I was lost and couldn't find my way. The first few chapters where really great to read additionally the last few chapters are also enjoyable the only problem of this book is that when you get toward the middle the chapters are kind of boring and I disliked the way the writer repeated the same things over and over again and he emphasized things that needn't be given that importance. Also in some way the writer gets carried away and it's inspirational but stupid to associate success with qualities of fairy tales princesses as I saw it.
Okay, I agree that it's the atmosphere of the book and that taste of hope that made it stand out but I still believe that the middle chapters could have been more realistic and more meaningful if they were more similar to the later and early ones.
One of the best notions of this book in my opinion is the one about the imaginary counselors where one puts around a table a number of person he regards as idols or successful people in life and he realize which characteristics he likes more about each one before imagining scenarios of their interaction with him which would ultimately result in him being a little more like the good quality he regards.
The book gets pretty boring and repetitive, not to mention the unrealistic advices because we have to face it it’s just a commercial book to sell and make money. This book offers a tinge of hope to people who are desperate for it and that’s one of the main reasons for the success it got.
Overall it's a rather okay book to read just for the sake of having done so( and you may actually like it or something) but definitely not one to read on a one night shot.

When you think of the self-help gurus of today, they can all pretty much credit Napoleon Hill as the original inspirational, motivational speaker of the 20th century. Nappy, as I lovingly refer to him, was ahead of his time with his Think and Grow Rich book. Of course, I didn't read it back than but I had to keep reminding myself the era of the book is from the 1920's. So I had to forgive him when he referenced a "colored girl" since that was accepted terminology back than.

What I like about Nappy is his writing style is simple and repetitive. You get the message and he gives it to you again so by the end of the book, assuming you buy into his message, you have been enlightened.

His message is simple, it's all in your mind. Decide what you want and go after it. He changed my life when I was at my lowest point in my life and couldn't see the light at the end of the tunnel. His words reached into that last bit of hope I had inside and intensified it to the point where I was able to get up, dust off and start over again. In a bad economy, I would definitely recommend either his book (which by the way can be downloaded for free) or watch youtube videos of him speaking. He has some great practical tools that are still relevant today (like his mastermind group: have a group of people as smart or smarter than you that you meet with regularly to bounce ideas around.)
