A delightful read on the gentle-mad passion of book-collecting. It's truly a captivating exploration. I refer to it as an “enabler” book because in the beginning chapter, the author quotes John Hill Burton. He states that book-collecting, in its hubris, “remains the one above all others ‘that leans to virtue’s side’”. This indeed kindled my dedication to collecting books, but not in the way Basbanes describes. I have no desire for first editions. Instead, I want to collect books according to my own criteria. However, my New Year's Resolution, which is to refrain from purchasing books unrelated to school, has somewhat dampened this bibliophilic spirit of mine. It's a bit of a struggle to balance my love for book-collecting with this self-imposed restriction. But perhaps it will also lead to a more focused and purposeful collection in the long run.

There's never anything to dislike about Basbanes' books. However, I've noticed that the more recent ones seem to be highly repetitive and not as thoroughly researched as his first/main volumes such as "A Gentle Madness" and "Patience & Fortitude". This book is no exception.

He does tell some new stories and delves a bit more explicitly into the rise of the Internet and its influence on the rare book world. His account is measured, and he does a great job of reporting other people's thoughts rather than simply adhering to his own pro-book bias. He also does a nice job of explaining to people, especially neophyte or potential collectors, how they can go about cultivating this hobby.

I'm always impressed by Basbanes' acceptance of all types of collectors and collections. His interest in the book world is extensive and not limited to a single kind of book or a single type of collector. This has been of great benefit to all of his books, and this one is no different. As I mentioned earlier, I would rate it higher if it were more original and detailed. As it is now, I would recommend his earlier books before this one.

Overall, while this book has its merits, it doesn't quite reach the same level as his earlier works.

Not what I was expecting, which is my own fault.

I had certain anticipations, but they weren't met. However, I take the blame for that.

With that said, I also found the style not to my liking.

The way it was presented just didn't appeal to me. It lacked the charm and appeal that I was hoping for.

Nevertheless, this experience did help me realize that I have no real interest in collecting books (or at least collecting rare books) though.

I thought I might have an inclination towards it, but now I see that it's not something that truly grabs my attention.

Maybe I'll explore other hobbies and interests instead.

Who knows what might capture my fancy in the future?

For now, I'll just move on and focus on other things.

A life-long collector has a wealth of real-life experiences that can be extremely beneficial for those who are looking to start their own collections.

For instance, this collector has learned the importance of having a clear focus. Deciding on a specific area or theme to collect within helps to narrow down the search and build a more cohesive collection.

Another valuable lesson is the significance of doing thorough research. Understanding the history, rarity, and value of the items being collected can prevent costly mistakes and ensure that the collection is both interesting and valuable.

The collector also emphasizes the importance of patience. Building a great collection takes time, and it's essential not to rush into purchases. Waiting for the right items to come along at the right price is key.

Finally, networking with other collectors can provide valuable insights, tips, and even opportunities to acquire unique pieces.

By learning from the experiences of a life-long collector, beginners can avoid common pitfalls and start building their own collections with confidence.

It wasn't what I'd hoped it would be.

To my disappointment, it turned out to be a lot of review of his other works.

Moreover, it was very anecdotal, lacking in-depth analysis and critical evaluation.

I had expected a more comprehensive and insightful exploration of the subject matter.

Instead, it seemed to focus mainly on telling stories and sharing personal experiences related to his other works.

While these anecdotes might have been interesting on their own, they didn't really contribute to a better understanding of the main topic.

I was left feeling rather dissatisfied and longing for a more substantial and meaningful treatment of the subject.

Perhaps in the future, there will be a more in-depth and engaging work that will meet my expectations.

While some of the technology mentioned in the article is a bit outdated (Google without ads! Oh, how we wish that were back!), it still offers a great deal of valuable information on book collecting. The author, Basbanes, provides timeless advice that is as relevant today as it was when the article was written. For example, he emphasizes the importance of collecting for pleasure and focusing on topics that truly interest you. He also delves into the market for big name titles, stressing the significance of condition and explaining how rare book fairs operate. In addition to the practical advice, Basbanes includes interesting side stories from the collecting world, which serve to entertain readers and add an extra layer of depth to the article. Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed this read and have every intention of holding onto my copy for future reference.
