This novel is truly heartwarming, capable of eliciting a wide range of emotions from you. At times, it makes you smile with joy, at others, it might make you cringe, and there are moments that can bring a sense of sadness.

I simply cannot fathom what it would have been like to live during the depression with such a large family. The father, Clay, has no choice but to leave in search of work, and yet the family still endeavors to make Christmas special in any way they can. Among the 8 children, there are those who still firmly believe in Santa. And when Clay manages to make it home on Christmas Eve, he shares a tale of Santa that further reinforces their belief.

The Homecoming serves as the foundation for the TV show 'The Waltons'. I have such fond memories of watching the show while growing up, and some of those episodes have really stayed with me. It emphasizes that family is above everything else and means the world. Family is the core, the source of love, support, and unity, and it is truly precious.

The Waltons TV show is based on Earl Hamner's stories, and this particular one is truly captivating.

It offers a unique glimpse into a bygone era, filled with the charm and simplicity that characterized that time.

If you're anticipating it to be an exact replica of the show, you might be a bit disappointed as it has its own distinct flavor.

However, that's perfectly okay. This is a short, period read that manages to transport you to a different world.

It allows you to experience the emotions and relationships of the characters in a more intimate way.

Despite its brevity, it packs a punch and leaves a lasting impression.

Whether you're a fan of the TV show or simply enjoy a good period story, this is definitely worth checking out.

It's a delightful escape that will make you appreciate the beauty and value of the past.

So, sit back, relax, and let this story take you on a wonderful journey.

I fell in love with Earl Hamner, Jr. the moment I started listening to him narrate The Walton’s.

The Walton’s, which can be found at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Wal..., was a remarkable television show. It was based on the book "The Homecoming" and began in the 1970s.

This show vividly told the story of a family during the Great Depression. The oldest son on the show was named John-Boy, with the name John being after his father. Interestingly, in the book, the character is called Clay-boy.

I truly enjoyed all the characters in both the book and on the show. The book, "The Homecoming: a novel about Spencer’s Mountain", is one that I have always eagerly wanted to read. It is a great Christmas story.

If you have a penchant for historical fiction and desire a fascinating glimpse of what life was like in the 1930s, then this is the perfect story for you.

Also, don't forget to check out this really cool video with Richard Thomas talking about playing John-boy. The link is https://youtu.be/k9RNSDC5zBg.

A classic.

It is distinct from the pilot, yet shares numerous similarities.

The story is an extremely enjoyable one, brimming with nostalgia, family affection, and the plight of a father.

During the days of rampant unemployment, difficult times, and unreliable or absent transportation, he endeavors to find his way home on Christmas Eve.

We can vividly picture the father's determination as he faces various obstacles on his journey.

The nostalgia aspect adds a layer of warmth and sentimentality, perhaps evoking memories of our own Christmases past.

The family affection is palpable, as we sense the father's longing to be with his loved ones during this special time.

Overall, this story is a beautiful portrayal of the human spirit in the face of adversity, and it reminds us of the importance of family and the power of hope during challenging times.

I do not bestow the "five-star" rating on many books. However, this particular one will forever remain among my all-time favorites and truly merits a five-star accolade!

I have an abiding love for the captivating stories of Earl Hamner Jr. and the Spencer clan. My absolute favorite television show is The Waltons, which is ingeniously based on his poignant tales of growing up on the idyllic Spencer Mountain.

The Homecoming, a heartwarming Christmas story, was initially transformed into a film and ultimately gave birth to the beloved television series.

This book is nothing short of perfection! It encapsulates all the charm, warmth, and authenticity that make the Spencer family's adventures so endearing. Every page is filled with vivid descriptions and engaging characters that draw the reader in and make them feel as if they are a part of the story.

Whether you are a die-hard fan of The Waltons or simply someone who appreciates a good story, this book is an absolute must-read. It will transport you to a simpler time and leave you with a sense of hope, love, and family values that will stay with you long after you have turned the final page.

The Homecoming by Earl Hamner, Jr. is a captivating story that follows Olivia Spencer and her eight children on Christmas Eve. They are eagerly waiting and nervously worrying about Clay's timely arrival home for Christmas.

This book served as the basis for the pilot of the Waltons series. If you're seeking something closely resembling the series, you'll discover certain similarities, yet there are also differences.

Earl Hamner, Jr. appears to have masterfully captured the essence of life in a rural, impoverished town. In a relatively short span, he has effectively defined the characters, including some of the minor ones.

One important disclaimer, without revealing any spoilers, is that although this book is targeted at younger readers, it is not as overly sweet and idealized as the TV series. I would highly recommend this book not only to younger readers but also to adults who were once enthusiasts of the series. It offers a unique and engaging perspective on the Walton family's story.

Overall, The Homecoming is a wonderful read that provides an interesting contrast to the beloved TV series and is sure to delight fans old and new.

Rural Americana during the depression era in Appalachia was a complex tapestry

interlaced with humor, sadness, and joy. It was a time when life was filled with the ever day humdrum.

The story begins one Christmas eve, with families gathering around the fireplace,

hoping for a better tomorrow. Despite the hardships, there was still a glimmer of hope

in the air. As the night wore on, children eagerly awaited the arrival of Santa Claus,

while their parents worried about how they would make ends meet.

But Christmas morning brought with it a new sense of hope and joy.

The children's faces lit up with excitement as they discovered the presents

under the tree. And even the adults couldn't help but smile at the sight of their

happy children.

It was a moment of pure magic in the midst of a difficult time.

And it was a reminder that even in the darkest of days, there is always

a reason to celebrate and be grateful.
