I made an attempt, but very soon, I lost all hope in these.

All three plays appear to be empty and chaotic experimental endeavors that yield no fruitful results. At first glance, they all tend towards a word that I often loathe using completely - 'pretentious'.

Evidently, there is style and thought present here, but I am simply not in the mood to appreciate reading at this moment.

I am not in a stage of my life where I can relish the comical absurdity of wordplay and the nonsensical situations in the opening scenes of Rhinocerous.

Perhaps when I am in need of something chaotic, I will come back. However, right now, I am unable to appreciate these fairly, and it would be a painful experience for me to attempt to slog through it.

It seems that my current state of mind is not receptive to the unique qualities and characteristics that these plays possess.

Maybe with a different frame of mind or at a different time in my life, I will be able to see the value and beauty in them.

It is definitely not something I would choose for myself, and I wouldn't really recommend it.

I think it would be far better to actually see this performed live because the staging is rather complex. I had difficulty imagining it, but I believe the staging plays a crucial role in comprehending the play.

The Chairs, on the other hand, presents a different theme. The feeling that getting old sucks comes across quite strongly in this piece. However, at times, it seems a bit too random, lacking a more coherent and developed narrative. This aspect gives it a score of 7.5 out of 10.

The Lesson, meanwhile, stands out with its engaging and well-crafted story. It manages to capture the reader's attention and keep them hooked throughout. With its interesting plot and characters, it earns a solid 8 out of 10.

This was good. I could see it in my mind. I think about it a lot - the rhinoceros. Only, I gave up after that.

That being said, I have read The Chairs before in my university days. Back then, I simply thought Ionesco was being chaotic with his storytelling and specific stage direction. However, now I see that he was attempting to make a precise point about how mad life can be and how mad drama trying to imitate this surely is.

Among the three featured plays, I enjoyed the ones that emphasized this madness more than the others. Rhinoceros became my favorite in its later act due to its epidemic theme. All the people in Berenger's life succumb to the strange transformation, leaving him as the last rational man in his village. Or perhaps he is missing out on a strange new freedom?

On re-reading The Chairs, I gained a greater appreciation for what Ionesco was trying to convey about gatherings, communication, and disappointment. The old man and his wife Semiramis reach a heightened state of delirium from which they can never return.

I lost patience with The Lesson. While I appreciate the parallel emotional journeys of the Professor and Student, I was bogged down by the transition from maths to philology, and the ending seemed too neat and mainstream, making me wonder if Ionesco was truly satisfied with it.

Nevertheless, I suppose absurdity was always his main objective. Each of these three plays has its own crazed logic that I could fortunately understand, and the critique of society's approach to communal spirit, VIP speeches, and imparting knowledge was astute and still relevant today.

I can safely say that I admire Ionesco's playwriting enough to read more of his work and, of course, see it on stage. I recommend Rhinoceros / The Chairs / The Lesson to readers seeking ingenious set design and exquisitely unhinged dialogue.
